How to choose an online course in five checks

Whatever subject you are in, the same five checks separate the course you will finish from the one you will abandon in week two.

1. Check the last-updated date before the rating. A 4.7 on a course last revised in 2021 is a warning in any fast-moving field. Every pick above was updated in 2026 or teaches material that does not date (accounting, learning science).

2. Read the review count, not just the average. A 4.8 from 300 reviews can be a launch promotion; a 4.6 from 150,000 is a settled verdict. Below about a thousand reviews, treat the rating as provisional.

3. Decide whether you need the certificate. If the answer is no, audit the Coursera course free or buy the Udemy course on sale. If the answer is yes, only the Google, IBM, CFI and vendor-exam credentials above will do anything for a resume.

4. Match the format to how you actually learn. Video lectures suit people who take notes; interactive exercises (DataCamp, Codecademy) suit people who learn by doing; graded projects with human feedback (Udacity, the ZTM community) suit people who need accountability. Picking the wrong format is the most common reason a good course goes unfinished.

Free vs paid: when the free version is enough

Six of the picks above can be taken free in full (CS50, Learning How to Learn, and the audit tracks of every Coursera course), and for most self-directed learners the free version is enough: the lectures, readings and most exercises are identical. You pay for three things: graded assignments, a certificate, and, on Udemy, lifetime ownership. Pay when one of those matters to you, and not before. The exception is accountability: people who have started three free courses and finished none usually finish the first one they pay for.

How we chose these courses

Each subject pick is the course our full guide for that subject already leads with, re-verified this month. We weigh four things: teaching quality (we take the courses), how current the material is (the last-updated date on every listing), whether the certificate carries any weight with employers (most do not, and we say which do), and price against outcome. A course had to clear all four to be a pick; a high rating alone was not enough, which is why a few Udemy courses with bigger review counts than the picks above did not make it.

The numbers are Coursera’s and Udemy’s own published ratings and counts, read from each page in a browser on 2 or 3 September 2026. Ratings drift; when we re-checked our AI courses list this week two courses had slipped a tenth of a point since May. We re-read every pick on this page at each refresh rather than carrying last year’s figures forward.

What is the best free online course?

CS50 from Harvard is the best free introduction to computer science, and Learning How to Learn is the best free course for anyone about to study anything. Almost every Coursera course, including the IBM and Google programs above, can be audited free without the certificate. Khan Academy and freeCodeCamp are entirely free and excellent.

Is Coursera or Udemy better?

They now belong to the same company (Coursera completed its acquisition of Udemy on 11 May 2026) but sell different things. Coursera is better for recognized credentials and university courses; Coursera Plus costs $59 a month or $399 a year. Are online course certificates worth anything?
