Before you commit $15,000 to a bootcamp, it’s worth asking whether you need one at all. The honest answer for many people is “no” — self-paced platforms cost a fraction of bootcamp tuition and produce capable junior developers every year.

The middle path: a structured self-paced platform. The credential distinction is the one that matters most and it is the one most comparison pages skip. Only the Coursera Professional Certificates carry an employer brand that a recruiter recognises — Meta, Google, IBM. Every other completion certificate on that list is essentially a receipt. If your reason for considering a bootcamp is “I need something on my résumé that isn’t self-taught,” a Professional Certificate closes most of that gap for a fraction of $15,000. If your reason is “I need someone to make me finish and then help me get hired,” no self-paced platform substitutes for a bootcamp’s career services.

Udacity is the strongest answer to that question. The trade-off is format: Nucamp is entirely part-time evenings and weekends, with a smaller career-services footprint than the premium bootcamps. Placement outcomes are reasonable but not industry-leading. If you have a job you can’t leave and a tight budget, Nucamp is genuinely the best fit. If you can quit and go full-time, the premium bootcamps will get you to a job faster.

Coding Dojo’s differentiator is that they teach you three full stacks (typically MERN, Python/Django, and Java/Spring) in a single program. The counter-argument is that you go an inch deep on each stack rather than mastering one.

What bootcamp graduates actually earn

Bootcamp marketing leans hard on salary figures, and almost all of those figures are self-reported by the school that wants your tuition. Here is the independent picture. It is more sober and considerably more useful.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track bootcamp graduates as a category — it tracks occupations. So read these as the market you are entering, not as what you will earn in month one:

Three caveats matter more than the headline numbers.

These are all-experience medians, not starting salaries. A median includes the principal engineer with fifteen years behind them. Your first role after a bootcamp sits well below it — typically in the range bootcamps themselves report for placement, which clusters far nearer $60,000–$80,000 than $133,000 depending on your market. Any bootcamp quoting you the BLS median as an expected outcome is misleading you, and it is worth noticing which ones do.

Web development and software development are different markets. Most coding bootcamps teach JavaScript and place graduates into web-developer-shaped roles, where the median is $90,930 and projected growth is 7% — not the $133,080 and 15% attached to software developers generally. Reading the higher number as yours is the single most common mistake prospective students make with this data.

BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry-level education for both occupations. That is the honest tension at the heart of every bootcamp decision, and no amount of marketing dissolves it. The handbook does note for web developers that educational requirements “vary, ranging from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree” — which is precisely the doorway bootcamps are built to walk you through. It is a real doorway. It is also narrower than a $15,000 landing page implies.

What jobs bootcamp graduates actually get

“Software engineer” is the aspiration. The realistic first-role list is broader, and knowing it in advance stops you from reading a perfectly good outcome as a failure.

  • Junior / associate front-end developer — the most common landing spot for JavaScript-first bootcamps. React is the near-universal expectation.
  • Full-stack developer at a small company — where “full-stack” genuinely means you do everything because there are four engineers.
  • QA engineer / automation tester — frequently overlooked by graduates, and a legitimate route in. The BLS median of $102,610 is not a consolation prize.
  • Technical support engineer or solutions engineer — a common side door for career-switchers whose previous career was customer-facing. Many move into development within two years.
