CFI and the CFA are not the same kind of credential, and comparing them as substitutes misleads people. The CFA charter is a professional designation awarded by CFA Institute after three proctored exams and years of qualifying work. CFI certifications (FMVA, CBCA, CMSA and four others) are training programs from Corporate Finance Institute, a private online school. They cost different amounts, take different amounts of time and open different doors.

This comparison explains what each one actually involves in 2026, what each costs, how hard each is, and when it makes sense to pursue one, the other or both. If you want the flagship CFI certificate set against the charter in more depth, our FMVA vs CFA comparison covers that pairing on its own.

The short answer

Choose the CFA if you want a career in asset management, equity research or portfolio management and can commit about 900 hours over several years. Choose CFI if you need practical Excel modeling skills for corporate finance, FP&A or banking within months. Many people do CFI first and the CFA later; the reverse is rare.

What CFI Actually Teaches

CFI sells a single annual membership that includes all seven of its certifications: FMVA (financial modeling and valuation), FPAP (FP&A), CBCA (commercial banking and credit), CMSA (capital markets), BIDA (business intelligence and data), FPWMP (wealth management) and FTIP (fintech). You cannot buy one certification on its own. Our guide to all seven CFI certifications compares them side by side.

The flagship is the FMVA. CFI lists it at 100 to 120 hours across 45 courses, 18 of them required, built around Excel: three-statement models, discounted cash flow valuation, comparable company analysis, and introductions to M&A and LBO modeling. Course exams need 80% and can be retaken; the final exam needs 70%.

CFI’s exams are online and multiple choice. CFI’s own comparison page describes them as open-book with unlimited retries while your membership is active, after a one-month cooldown. Its terms of service, last updated 25 August 2026, now define proctored examinations (identity checks and remote proctoring) for any assessment CFI designates, so check the current rules for your final exam before you book it.

On recognition, be precise. CFI is a registered sponsor on the NASBA National Registry of CPE Sponsors, so a licensed CPA can count its courses as continuing education. Walbrook Institute London accredits six of CFI’s programs; CFI’s own Walbrook page leaves FPAP off that list. None of this is the same as a regulated designation, and no employer treats an FMVA as equivalent to the charter.

What the CFA Charter Actually Requires

The CFA Program has three exam levels covering ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equities, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments and portfolio management. CFA Institute sets the curriculum and gives about 300 hours of study per level as its guide. The exams run at Prometric test centers; in the current schedule Level I is offered four times a year, Level II three times and Level III twice. You can sit at most two CFA exams in a calendar year, and not in consecutive windows.

Two parts of the program are newer than most comparison pages admit. Every candidate must complete at least one Practical Skills Module per level, each taking 10 to 20 hours, before CFA Institute releases the exam result; topics include financial modeling and Python, data science and AI. And Level III now has three pathways (Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth), which together make up 30% to 35% of that exam.

To enroll you need a bachelor’s degree, to be close enough to finishing one (your Level I window must fall within 23 months of graduation), or 4,000 hours of work and higher education over at least three years, according to CFA Institute’s program policies. Passing the exams is not the end. To use the designation you need 4,000 hours of qualifying work over at least 36 months, professional references and Charterholder membership at USD 299 a year, as the charter requirements set out.

What Each Costs in 2026

Cost is the clearest difference. CFI is a subscription that most people need for one year. The CFA is a series of exam fees, each paid separately, plus study materials and then annual dues.

Item CFI CFA
Program or exam fees Self-Study $347.90/yr; Full-Immersion $592.90/yr Levels I and II: USD 1,140 early or 1,490 standard each; Level III: USD 1,240 or 1,590
Total to finish One year of membership covers most people (FMVA is 100 to 120 hours) USD 3,520 (all early) to USD 4,570 (all standard) in exam fees
Study materials Included in the membership CFA Institute curriculum included; third-party prep extra (AnalystPrep from $349 per level, $799 for all three)
Rescheduling or retakes Retakes included while you subscribe USD 250 to reschedule within a window; a failed level means paying that level’s fee again
After you earn it Certificate stays valid; membership optional USD 299/yr Charterholder membership, plus any local society dues
Discounts Verified students: $248.50/yr Early registration saves USD 350 a level; CFA Institute scholarships

A realistic CFA budget, passing each level the first time with early registration and a mid-priced prep course, comes to about USD 3,520 in exam fees plus, typically, $800 to $2,000 in prep, before dues. Failing a level adds that level’s fee again. If you need a prep provider, our best CFA prep courses guide ranks the options; AnalystPrep is the low-cost pick at $349 for a Level I practice package or $799 for all three levels with lifetime access (October 2026).

How Hard Is Each? Pass Rates and Exam Format

The CFA is far harder, and the published numbers show it. CFA Institute publishes pass rates after every exam window:

Exam Latest result Previous 2022-2026 average
CFA Level I 43% (August 2026, 28,145 candidates) 39% (May 2026); 45% (February 2026) 41%
CFA Level II 45% (August 2026, 10,004 candidates) 43% (May 2026) 46%
CFA Level III 50% (February 2026, 11,269 candidates) 50% (August 2025) 49%
CFI programs About 81% average across programs (CFI help center) Exams retakable with an active membership Not published by year

Roughly half or fewer of the candidates pass each sitting, and every one of them studied for months. CFI’s figure is not comparable: its exams test the course you just completed and can be retaken. That does not make CFI worthless; it makes CFI training, and the CFA a filter.

When CFI Makes More Sense Than CFA

  • You need modeling skills now, not in three years. If your job already asks you to build models, CFI teaches usable skills in months.
  • You work in corporate finance or FP&A. The CFA curriculum leans toward investment management. FMVA and FPAP match budgeting, forecasting and internal analysis work more closely.
  • You are changing careers into finance. CFI has no entry requirements. The CFA needs a degree or work history to enroll and four years of qualifying work before you can use the designation.
  • Your budget is limited. $347.90 a year covers all seven CFI certifications. CFA exam fees alone start at USD 3,520.
  • You want commercial banking or credit skills. The CFA covers credit only inside fixed income; CFI’s CBCA is built around it.

When CFA Makes More Sense Than CFI

  • You want to work in asset management or equity research. These employers commonly list the CFA as preferred or expected; no CFI certification substitutes for it.
  • Your employer rewards CFA progress. Some buy-side firms tie promotion or pay to passing levels. In that setting CFI is a supplement, not the main credential.
  • You want a designation recognized across countries. The charter carries the same meaning in New York, London and Singapore, and CFA Institute enforces a code of ethics behind it.
  • You are early in an investment career. If you have the work experience coming and the time to study, the charter has the higher ceiling for investment roles.

Which CFI Certifications Pair Well With the CFA?

If you plan to do both, choose the CFI program that overlaps the CFA level or pathway you are working on.

CFI certification Where it overlaps the CFA Read
FMVA Level II equity valuation (DCF, comparables) and the Financial Modeling Practical Skills Module FMVA vs CFA, in depth
CMSA Fixed income, derivatives and capital markets readings at Levels I and II CMSA review
FPWMP The Level III Private Wealth pathway (financial planning for individuals) FPWMP review
CBCA Credit analysis, which the CFA covers lightly inside fixed income CBCA review
FPAP / FTIP Little overlap: FP&A and fintech sit outside the CFA curriculum FPAP · FTIP

For most candidates the FMVA is the useful pairing, because Level II leans heavily on valuation and the financial modeling skills module rewards the same Excel habits. The others matter only if your role points that way.

Can You Do Both?

Yes, and many people do. The common path is CFI first, for skills you can use at work this year, then the CFA over the longer term. Candidates on finance forums describe using CFI courses as a practical complement while studying for the CFA, because the CFA curriculum explains valuation without making you build the model in Excel.

The cost argument for doing both is simple: a year of CFI Self-Study at $347.90 is about a tenth of the CFA’s minimum exam fees. The time argument is harder. If you are already sitting a CFA level, finish that first; adding a second program in the final months before an exam rarely helps.

The Honest Bottom Line

If someone says CFI is as good as the CFA, they are wrong. If someone says you need the CFA for every finance career, they are also wrong. One is a training program you can finish in months for a few hundred dollars. The other is a professional designation that takes years and several thousand dollars. Choose by career path, timeline and budget, not by which website is pushing which product.

Our verdict: Corporate Finance Institute, 4.3 / 5

We score CFI because it is a product you buy and complete, and we have reviewed it. We deliberately do not score the CFA charter: it is a designation awarded after three exams and 4,000 hours of verified work, not a course, and putting both on one scale would be the false equivalence this page argues against.

  • Practical modeling: its strongest ground. The FMVA’s required courses are built around Excel model builds: three-statement models, DCF, comparables and an introduction to LBOs.
  • Speed and cost: excellent. Three to six months at $347.90 a year, against several years and USD 3,520 or more in exam fees for the charter.
  • Recognition: real, but bounded. A NASBA-registered CPE sponsor with six programs accredited by Walbrook Institute London. No employer treats it as equivalent to the charter.
  • Ceiling: why it is not rated higher. For asset management, equity research and portfolio management, no CFI certification substitutes for the CFA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CFI FMVA equivalent to the CFA?

No. The FMVA is a certificate from Corporate Finance Institute, a private online school; you earn it by passing CFI’s own course and final exams. The CFA charter is a professional designation from CFA Institute that requires three proctored exams, at least 4,000 hours of qualifying work over 36 months or more, and membership. Employers do not treat them as substitutes.

How much does the CFA cost in total?

CFA Institute puts the exam fees for all three levels at USD 3,520 to 4,570, depending on early or standard registration (October 2026: Levels I and II USD 1,140 or 1,490 each, Level III USD 1,240 or 1,590). Prep materials are extra, from about $349 a level for a practice package to $799 or more for an all-levels course, and charterholders then pay USD 299 a year in dues.

How much does CFI cost?

In October 2026 CFI shows 30% off to every visitor: Self-Study is $347.90 a year (list $497) and Full-Immersion $592.90 a year (list $847). One membership includes all seven CFI certifications. Students with a university email pay $248.50 a year. CFI’s terms say pre-paid fees are not refundable except where the law requires it.

Which is harder, CFI or the CFA?

The CFA, by a wide margin. Recent CFA pass rates run from about 39% to 50% per level (Level I 43% in August 2026, Level II 45%, Level III 50% in February 2026), and each level takes about 300 hours of study. CFI exams are online, multiple choice and retakable while your membership is active; CFI reports an average pass rate of about 81% across its programs.

Can I put FMVA after my name like CFA?

You can list the FMVA on a resume or LinkedIn profile, and CFI encourages it. It is a certificate, though, not a regulated designation. The CFA marks are licensed by CFA Institute and may only be used by charterholders who keep their membership current.

Does CFI count toward the CFA?

No. CFI courses do not earn CFA credit, exemptions or work-experience hours. They can make CFA material easier to absorb, especially the valuation and modeling parts of Level II and the financial modeling Practical Skills Module.

Do employers prefer the CFA or CFI?

It depends on the job. Asset managers, equity research teams and many buy-side firms look for the CFA or progress toward it. Corporate finance, FP&A and banking teams care more about whether you can build a model, which is what CFI trains. Neither gets you hired on its own.

Is CFI the same as a certified flight instructor?

No. On this page CFI means Corporate Finance Institute, the online finance school. In aviation, CFI stands for certified flight instructor, which is an FAA rating and has nothing to do with the CFA.
