The best project management course for most beginners is the Google Project Management Professional Certificate on Coursera: seven courses, about six months at 10 hours a week, rated 4.8 from 145,621 reviews. If you already lead projects and want the credential employers screen for, go straight to PMP prep with Andrew Ramdayal’s PMP Exam Prep course on Udemy (4.8 from 206,159 ratings, 35 hours, updated October 2026).

We rebuilt this list in October 2026. The old version mixed in general business courses (learning how to learn, negotiation, design thinking) and left out the two things readers ask about most: the CAPM and PMP certifications, and whether a course counts toward their training-hour requirement. Every course below was opened and checked on its own page, and the picks are grouped by what you are trying to do.

How we chose these courses

Ratings alone do not separate project management courses, because most of the big ones sit between 4.5 and 4.8. We weighed four things instead:

• Does it lead somewhere? A course that counts toward PMI’s CAPM or PMP education requirement, or that ends in a recognized certificate, beat an equally good stand-alone lecture.
• Is it current? PMI changed the PMP exam outline and its training rules, so we checked each prep course’s “last updated” date. Two older picks from the previous version of this page were dropped for that reason.
• Scale of reviews. A 4.8 from 200,000 learners tells you more than a 4.9 from 56.
• Cost per outcome. A $20 Udemy course that covers your 35 PMP hours can be a better buy than a $1,000 program, if the credential is the goal.

We have not taken every course on this page. Ratings, review counts, lengths and prices come from each provider’s own page on 14 October 2026; learner experiences come from Reddit threads in r/PMCareers, r/pmp and r/projectmanagers, paraphrased.

Best project management courses for beginners

1. Google Project Management Professional Certificate (Coursera)

Google’s certificate is the default starting point for good reason. It is a seven-course series built for people with no degree or experience requirement, and Coursera lists it at about six months at 10 hours a week. More than 2.8 million people have enrolled, and the courses average 4.8 stars across 145,621 reviews. It covers project initiation, planning, execution, agile and Scrum, and a capstone, and Google has added AI material to the program.

Coursera says the certificate gives you “over 100 hours” of project management education toward PMI certifications such as the CAPM. On r/pmp, several learners said they used it for the PMP’s 35 training hours and were approved; PMI’s own PMP page confirms that self-paced courses “from any organization” qualify. On r/PMCareers, people who hire project managers are blunter: they call it a good introduction that will not land a job on its own, because interviews turn on experience. Treat it as a way to learn the vocabulary and earn your PMI hours, not as a job ticket.

2. IBM Project Manager Professional Certificate (Coursera)

IBM’s eight-course certificate is the better pick if you are aiming at IT or software projects. Coursera lists it at about three months at 10 hours a week, with a 4.8 rating from 5,901 reviews, and the program ends with a CAPM practice exam built to simulate the real test. It is shorter and more tool-focused than Google’s program, with hands-on labs, which suits learners who already work near a technical team.

3. Project Management Principles and Practices (UC Irvine, Coursera)

This four-course specialization from the University of California, Irvine, taught by Margaret Meloni (MBA, PMP), has one of the largest review bases in the category: 4.7 from 31,005 reviews and more than 262,000 enrollments. It follows the classic PMI structure of initiating, planning, budgeting and scheduling, and managing risk, so it pairs well with later CAPM study. Its first course, Project Management: The Basics for Success (Rob Stone, 4.6 from 11,283 reviews, about 7 hours), works as a free-to-try sampler.

4. Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management (UVA Darden, Coursera)

If you want one short, rigorous course rather than a certificate, this is it. Professor Yael Grushka-Cockayne of the University of Virginia’s Darden School covers scoping, scheduling and the critical path in about 9 hours, and it is rated 4.7 from 10,443 reviews. It is a sensible first step for managers who run projects as part of another job and do not need a credential. View the Darden course

Best courses for CAPM and PMP certification prep

PMI’s two main certifications have different gates. The CAPM needs a secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education; the PMP needs 35 hours of training plus 2 to 5 years of experience leading projects, depending on your education. 5. PMP Exam Prep Course, 35 PDUs/Hours (Andrew Ramdayal, Udemy)

Andrew Ramdayal’s course is the most-reviewed PMP prep course we found anywhere: 4.8 from 206,159 ratings and more than 666,000 students, with 35 hours of video and an October 2026 update for the current exam. It is built around the 35 contact hours the PMP application asks for, and its title says it is updated for the 2026 exam. 6. CAPM Exam Prep Course, 25 PDUs (Andrew Ramdayal, Udemy)

The same instructor’s CAPM course covers the 23-hour education requirement with 26 hours of content, rated 4.7 from 23,139 ratings and updated in February 2026. It is the cheapest structured route to the CAPM for someone without project experience. View the CAPM prep course

7. PMP Certification Exam Prep 35 PDU (Umer Waqar, Udemy)

A solid second option if Ramdayal’s teaching style does not suit you: 4.5 from 19,715 ratings, about 30 hours of video, updated August 2026. 8. Microsoft Project Management Professional Certificate (Coursera)

Microsoft’s nine-course program aims explicitly at PMP preparation, with modules on the PMP performance domains, PMP formulas, the application process and a mock exam, plus Excel scheduling. It is newer and has fewer reviews (4.6 from 823), and it takes about four months at 10 hours a week. It suits learners who want PMP-shaped study inside a Coursera Plus subscription they already pay for. View the Microsoft certificate

9. KnowledgeHut CAPM Certification Training (live)

If you study better with a live instructor, KnowledgeHut’s CAPM course combines 23 hours of live online training with 15 hours of on-demand content. It listed at $599 (down from $799) on 14 October 2026. That is far more than a Udemy course, so it only makes sense if the live format is what will get you to the exam. Best agile and Scrum courses

10. Agile Project Management (Google, Coursera)

This is one course from the Google certificate, sold on its own: 4.8 from 15,317 reviews, about two weeks at 10 hours a week. It covers agile values, Scrum roles and events, and how to run sprints, and it is the quickest structured introduction we found. View the course

11. Agile with Atlassian Jira (Coursera)

12. Agile Project Management Professional Certificate (University of Maryland, edX)

A university-branded agile credential from the University System of Maryland, spread over about five months. It listed at $1,245, discounted to $1,120.50, on 14 October 2026. It costs far more than the Coursera options, so choose it only if a university name on the certificate matters to your employer. Best short courses for project management tools and skills

13. Microsoft Excel for Project Management (Joseph Phillips, Udemy)

Joseph Phillips shows how to turn project data into stakeholder reports, dashboards and charts in Excel, and how to use conditional formatting to automate status reporting. It runs about 4.5 hours, rated 4.5 from 11,182 ratings and updated June 2024. It earns 5 PDUs, which PMP holders can use toward renewal. 14. Stakeholder Management for Project Managers (Udemy)

A focused 1.5-hour course by Luciano Garagna on the people side of a project: building trust with your sponsor, negotiating SMART objectives, analyzing stakeholders, and writing a communication plan and project charter. It is rated 4.5 from 4,826 ratings and was updated in December 2025. Hiring managers on r/PMCareers say interviews turn on how you handled real projects, and stakeholder conflicts are where many of those stories come from. View the course

15. Digital Project Management Nanodegree (Udacity)

Udacity’s program covers agile and waterfall planning for digital projects in about 22 hours, with one reviewed project, and it is rated 4.9 from 56 reviews. It is priced as a subscription: $846 for a four-month bundle ($212 a month), or monthly. The project feedback is the main reason to pay more than you would for Coursera. View the Udacity program

What changed from the old version of this list

Five courses on the previous list were good courses, but not project management courses: Learning How to Learn, Successful Negotiation, Design Thinking for Innovation, Managing the Company of the Future and Innovation Management. They are still available on Coursera, and you will find the business-skills ones in our best business courses guide. We also dropped LearnSmart’s Mastering Agile Scrum course (4.3, last updated June 2017), because agile practice and the PMI exams have both moved on since then.

Project management course vs certification: which do you need?

A course teaches you the work. A certification is an exam-based credential from a body such as PMI. The two connect, because PMI requires a set number of education hours before you can sit its exams, and most courses on this page are built to provide those hours.

Those are PMI’s own survey figures, and they reflect experience as much as the credential. The PMP exam now weights People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%.

How much do project management courses cost?

Prices vary more by format than by quality. These were the prices on 14 October 2026:

• Free: PMI’s free one-hour introductory PMP course; Coursera’s financial aid for its certificates; the 7-day trial on Coursera Plus monthly.
• Under $30: most Udemy courses, which sell at frequent discounts (the price shown depends on the day you visit).
• $59 a month or $399 a year: Coursera Plus, which includes the Google, IBM, Microsoft and UC Irvine programs above.
• $599 to $1,245: live CAPM training (KnowledgeHut $599) and university-branded certificates (edX Maryland $1,245 list).
• $846: Udacity’s four-month bundle.
• PMP exam: $425 for PMI members and $675 for non-members, separate from any course.

For most people, the cheapest credible path to the PMP is a self-paced Udemy course for the 35 hours plus a question bank, then the PMI fee. Paying more buys structure, live teaching or a brand name, not a different exam.

Are free project management courses any good?

Yes, for learning. Coursera’s single courses, such as Darden’s Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management, can be previewed before you pay, and Coursera offers financial aid on its certificates. PMI offers a free one-hour introduction to the PMP on its certification page. What free options rarely give you is a certificate or documented hours, so if you need the 35 PMP hours or the 23 CAPM hours on paper, budget for at least an inexpensive course with a completion certificate.

Are project management certifications worth it?

It depends on where you are. The clearest pattern in the Reddit threads we read is that certificates get you interviews, and experience gets you the job.

• Google or IBM certificate: worth it as structured learning and as a source of PMI education hours. Hiring managers on r/PMCareers say it rarely decides a hire by itself.
• CAPM: useful when you have no project experience yet and want a PMI credential on your resume. One r/projectmanagers commenter holds the CAPM while working toward the PMP, which is the usual order.
• PMP: the one that changes outcomes. Experienced project managers on r/projectmanagers report that postings listing “PMP preferred” filter out candidates without it, even if it matters less once you are in the room.

If you are moving into project management from another role, the practical route is a beginner certificate now, project responsibility in your current job, and the PMP once you have the experience to qualify.

How to choose the right project management course

• No experience, want a first PM job: Google or IBM certificate, then the CAPM.
• Already leading projects: skip the beginner certificates and go straight to PMP prep.
• IT and software: IBM’s certificate plus the agile and Jira courses.
• Construction and engineering: the PMP is the recognized credential; the UC Irvine and Darden courses cover the predictive methods those projects use.
• You run projects as part of another job: one short course (Darden) and the Excel course are enough.
