Jira runs the backlog for most software and product teams, but it is deep enough that learning it on the job means missing half of what it can do. A few hours of structured training pays for itself the first time you build a board or workflow that fits how your team works.
Most Jira training lives on Udemy, and Atlassian publishes its own courses on Coursera and on its free learning site. On 22 October 2026 we loaded every course below and re-read its rating, enrollment, length and last-updated date, and checked Atlassian’s current certification and pricing pages. Best for: project managers and Scrum Masters who want Jira taught by Atlassian. Worth knowing: Coursera replaced free auditing with a Preview of the first module; the full course and certificate need a Coursera subscription. What about Jira certification?
“Jira certification” can mean two very different things, and it is worth separating them.
Course completion certificates come from Udemy or Coursera when you finish a course. They show you did the training and are fine on a LinkedIn profile, but they are not Atlassian credentials.
Official Atlassian credentials come in three tiers (Atlassian, 22 October 2026):

Two current details matter if you are planning an admin certification. Atlassian is retiring the Managing Jira Projects for Cloud exam in January 2027 and offers it at half price until then; its content moves into an updated Jira Administration for Cloud exam due the same month. And under Atlassian’s credential policies, ACP exams allow four attempts with 14 days between them, retakes cost the same as the first attempt, and fees paid by card are refunded if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead.
If your goal is an administrator role, the Team Workflows course plus Atlassian’s free prep material is the realistic path. If you just need to use Jira well, the Jira Essentials certification or a completion certificate from any pick above is enough.
How to learn Jira for free
You can get surprisingly far without paying:
- Atlassian’s free training: Atlassian Learning offers free on-demand courses and learning paths for Jira, plus free community-led online classes.
- Introduction to Jira on Coursera: Atlassian’s short course (2 modules, 4.5 from 26 reviews, 6,913 enrolled), with the first module free under Coursera’s Preview.
- Jira’s free plan: Atlassian lists Jira as free forever for up to 10 users. Set up a sandbox project and practice.
That last point came up again and again in the threads we read. Experienced users advised signing up for the free tier, using two email addresses to practice collaboration, and doing the things your job will need: creating, assigning and tracking work, then raising and resolving issues.
Is Jira easy to learn?
For everyday use, yes. People in the project management threads we read described Jira as unintuitive at first but easy to learn, and most said a few hours with a course plus a sandbox project was enough to be productive. Two practical warnings came up repeatedly. Many beginner tutorials start by setting Jira up from a blank slate, which is not what most users do, so look for courses that teach boards and day-to-day use. And large companies customize their workflows heavily, so learn JQL, Jira’s search language, because it works the same everywhere.
Administration is a different story. One Jira administrator estimated two to three years to reach mastery of Jira and Confluence administration self-taught, and said formal classes cut about a year off that. If you are heading for the admin role, plan for the ACP route rather than a single course.
Jira, Confluence or Jira Service Management: which training do you need?
Atlassian sells several products that look alike, and job ads often list them together. Pick training for the one you will use:
- Jira: planning and tracking work on boards, backlogs and sprints. Every pick above.
- Confluence: the team wiki for specs, meeting notes and documentation. Pick 3 adds a Confluence module.
- Jira Service Management: the help-desk version for IT and support teams, with queues, SLAs and a customer portal. It needs its own training; Atlassian’s free learning site has a JSM path.
If a job ad says “Jira and Confluence”, pick 3 is the efficient choice. If it says “JSM” or “service desk”, start with Atlassian’s free JSM material before any general Jira course.
A one-week plan to get productive in Jira
- Day 1: sign up for the free plan and take the first two hours of a beginner course.
- Days 2 and 3: build a scrum board and a kanban board for a real or invented project, with 20 work items.
- Day 4: learn basic JQL searches and save three filters you would use at work.
- Day 5: run a mock sprint: plan it, move work through it, close it and read the sprint report.
- Weekend: decide whether you need the Jira Essentials certification, and if so, book the exam.
If you are joining a company that already uses Jira, ask for read access to one of its boards before your first day. Its custom workflow will matter more than any default setup a course teaches.
