The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is the project management certification you can earn without project experience. It is run by PMI, the same body behind the PMP, and it is aimed at students, career changers and project coordinators who want a recognized credential now rather than in three to five years. This guide covers what it requires, what it costs, what the exam looks like, how to prepare and whether it is worth it in 2026.
Looking for CAPM in finance? That is the Capital Asset Pricing Model, a different thing entirely. This page is about the PMI project management certification.
QUICK VERDICT
Bottom line: The CAPM costs $225 to $300 plus 23 hours of training, takes most people four to eight weeks, and is the fastest recognized project management credential for someone without project experience. If you already qualify for the PMP, skip it.

The CAPM is PMI’s entry-level certification. It shows that you understand project management fundamentals, the main delivery approaches (predictive or plan-based, and agile) and the basics of business analysis. It does not prove you can run a project; that is what the PMP and its experience requirement are for. What it does prove is that you speak the language, which is what hiring managers for coordinator and junior roles look for.
It is also a stepping stone. PMI says an active CAPM fulfills the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement, so the work is not wasted when you later qualify for the PMP. Our CAPM vs PMP comparison covers that decision in detail.
CAPM requirements
- Education: a secondary degree (a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent).
- Training: 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam. PMI’s own on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course or an instructor-led CAPM course meets it, and so do other project management courses that give you a completion record.
- Experience: none. This is the main difference from the PMP, which needs two to five years depending on your education (see the PMP requirements).
Keep your course certificate. PMI audits a share of applications, and the completion record is what you show if yours is picked.
How to get the CAPM certification, step by step
- Complete 23 hours of project management education. A dedicated CAPM course is the efficient way to do it, because it also prepares you for the exam (see the course picks below).
- Apply on PMI’s CAPM page. You enter your education and your training hours. PMI reviews the application, usually within a few days.
- Pay the exam fee. You pay after the application is accepted: $225 as a PMI member or $300 otherwise.
- Schedule the exam. Book it at a Pearson VUE test center, which PMI recommends, or take it online with a remote proctor.
- Sit and pass the exam. If you do not pass, you can attempt the exam up to three times in one year.
The CAPM exam: format and content
| Item | Detail (PMI, 7 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Questions | 150 (135 scored, 15 unscored pretest questions) |
| Time | 180 minutes |
| Where | Pearson VUE test center or online |
| Languages | English plus seven others |
| Attempts | Up to three in one year |
The questions are spread across four domains:
| Domain | Share of the exam |
|---|---|
| Project management fundamentals and core concepts | 36% |
| Business analysis frameworks | 27% |
| Agile frameworks and methodologies | 20% |
| Predictive, plan-based methodologies | 17% |
Two things stand out. Business analysis is more than a quarter of the exam, and it is the domain people neglect when they study from general project management material. And agile plus predictive together are only 37%, so memorizing process charts will not carry you; you need the core concepts and the vocabulary across all four areas. You do not need to know the PMP’s 2026 changes for the CAPM, which has its own outline.
How much does the CAPM cost?
| Item | Cost (7 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| CAPM exam, PMI member | $225 |
| CAPM exam, non-member | $300 |
| Udemy CAPM course (23+ hours) | Often under $30 on sale |
| PMI’s CAPM Exam Prep Course | $350 member / $400 |
| Live online CAPM class (e.g. KnowledgeHut) | Varies by schedule |
The cheapest legitimate route is about $330: a non-member exam fee plus a Udemy course bought on sale. PMI membership lowers the exam fee by $75 and the PMI course by $50, so check the current membership price and whether you would use its other benefits before you join just for the discount.
The best CAPM prep courses
1. Joseph Phillips’ CAPM Exam Prep Seminar (Udemy): best overall
CAPM Exam Prep Seminar is the most-reviewed CAPM course we found: 4.7 stars from 35,349 ratings and over 125,000 students. It runs 44 hours, well past the 23 you need, with two practice tests. The title still says “Updated for the 2023 CAPM Exam”, which is the current CAPM outline, and the course page shows a last update of March 2026. Phillips explains each concept before testing it, which suits people new to project management. He also sells a 12.5-hour CAPM Exam Cram Session for final review.
2. Andrew Ramdayal’s CAPM Exam Prep Course (Udemy): best if you plan to take the PMP later
CAPM Exam Prep Course 25 PDUs from TIA Training is rated 4.7 from 22,998 ratings and runs 26 hours with a practice test (last updated February 2026). Ramdayal’s PMP course is the most popular PMP course on Udemy, so if you expect to move on to the PMP, learning his approach now carries over.
3. Sabri C., CAPM 37 PDU Exam Prep with 1,700+ questions (Udemy): best for practice
CAPM Certification: 37 PDU CAPM Exam Prep & 1700+ Questions combines 37.5 hours of video with more than 1,700 practice questions. It was updated in September 2026, the most recent of the Udemy picks, and is rated 4.8 from 7,090 ratings. Choose it if you learn best by answering questions and reading explanations.
4. PMI’s CAPM Exam Prep Course: the official option
PMI’s on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course is 23 hours, carries 23 PDUs and meets the education requirement exactly. It costs $350 for members and $400 otherwise. It is the obvious pick if an employer is paying or you want the material straight from the exam’s author. We earn nothing from PMI.
5. KnowledgeHut: best live class
KnowledgeHut’s CAPM Certification Training gives 23 contact hours of live, instructor-led training plus 15 hours of self-paced content. A fixed timetable helps if you struggle to study alone. The price depends on the class schedule you choose.
6. Master of Project Academy
Master of Project Academy’s CAPM Certification Training provides the 23 contact hours in a self-paced format with a 7-day money-back guarantee, and it bundles other PMI-related courses if you plan several certifications. See our Master of Project Academy review.
Another route to the hours: the Google Project Management Certificate
The Google Project Management Certificate on Coursera is not CAPM exam prep, but Google says it gives you over 100 hours of project management education, which helps prepare you for the CAPM. It takes about six months at 10 hours a week, and it builds job skills and a portfolio project, which the CAPM courses do not. Read our Google Project Management Certificate review if you want both a credential and practical skills.
How hard is the CAPM, and how long should you study?
The CAPM is a knowledge exam. Questions ask what a term means, which tool fits a situation or which approach applies, rather than the long judgment scenarios of the PMP. People who do the 23 hours of training and then work through several hundred practice questions usually feel ready in four to eight weeks of part-time study. PMI does not publish a pass rate, so treat any figure you see quoted with suspicion.
A simple plan: finish your course in two to three weeks, apply as soon as you have the certificate, then spend two to four weeks on practice questions with extra time on business analysis. Book the exam once you are scoring consistently on full-length timed practice tests.
Does the CAPM expire? Renewal explained
Yes. The CAPM runs on a three-year cycle, and to keep it active you earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) in each cycle. At least 9 must come from education, at most 6 from giving back to the profession (for example volunteering or working as a practitioner), and you need at least 2 in each of PMI’s three Talent Triangle areas. You also pay PMI’s renewal fee, which is separate from membership.
Many people never renew because they move on to the PMP, which replaces the CAPM as their headline credential. If you are not planning the PMP within three years, budget a few hours a year of webinars or courses to keep the CAPM current.
Is the CAPM certification worth it?
PMI quotes a $100,750 average salary for CAPM-certified project managers in the United States, citing Forbes. Treat that as a figure for people in project manager roles who hold the CAPM, not as what a new holder will earn: most people take the CAPM at the start of their careers, in coordinator or analyst jobs that pay less.
Where it helps most:
- Students and recent graduates applying for project coordinator or analyst roles, where it separates you from other applicants without experience.
- Career changers moving into project work who need proof of the basics.
- Future PMP candidates, because an active CAPM covers the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement.
Where it helps least: if you already have three or more years leading projects and a degree, you qualify for the PMP, which employers rate far higher. Go straight to our best PMP courses guide instead.
CAPM vs the Google certificate vs PRINCE2 Foundation
These are the three entry-level project management credentials people weigh most often. They do different jobs:
| CAPM | Google Project Management Certificate | PRINCE2 Foundation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issued by | PMI | Google, on Coursera | PeopleCert (owner of the AXELOS framework) |
| Experience needed | None | None | None |
| How you earn it | Proctored 150-question exam | Seven courses with graded assignments, no proctored exam | Proctored exam on the PRINCE2 method |
| What it shows | You know PMI terminology, methods and business analysis basics | Practical skills and a portfolio project | You know the PRINCE2 method used widely in UK and European public bodies |
| Strongest in | US and PMI-aligned employers; leads on to the PMP | Career changers who need job-ready skills | UK, Europe and Australia |
The CAPM is the better credential when an employer, or your later PMP plan, cares about PMI. The Google certificate is better when you need skills and something to show in interviews. Some people do both: the Google program first for the skills, then the CAPM exam, using Google’s 100-plus hours toward the CAPM’s 23-hour requirement. If you are applying mainly in the UK, Europe or Australia, look at how often PRINCE2 appears in the job ads you want before choosing the CAPM.
Frequently asked questions
What is the CAPM certification?
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is PMI’s entry-level project management certification. It needs no project experience: you need a secondary diploma and 23 hours of project management education, then you pass a 150-question, 180-minute exam on project management fundamentals, predictive and agile methods, and business analysis.
How much does the CAPM cost?
The exam fee is $225 for PMI members and $300 for non-members. The 23 hours of education can cost under $30 with a Udemy course on sale or $350-$400 with PMI’s own on-demand course, so a self-funded candidate can get certified for roughly $330 in total.
Does the CAPM certification expire?
Yes, it runs on a three-year cycle. To renew it you earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) in those three years, with at least 9 from education, at most 6 from giving back to the profession, and at least 2 in each of PMI’s three Talent Triangle areas, then pay PMI’s renewal fee.
How long does it take to get CAPM certified?
Most people need four to eight weeks: 23 hours of coursework, a few days for PMI to review the application, then two to four weeks of practice questions. That is an estimate; PMI gives you up to three attempts within a year.
Is the CAPM exam hard?
It is easier than the PMP. The CAPM tests whether you know project management concepts, terms and methods, while the PMP asks you to apply them in scenarios. The business analysis domain (27%) surprises people who only studied classic project management, so cover it deliberately. PMI does not publish a pass rate.
Is the CAPM worth it?
For students, career changers and project coordinators who cannot yet qualify for the PMP, usually yes: it is cheap, fast and recognized, and an active CAPM covers the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement later. If you already have three or more years leading projects and a degree, go straight to the PMP.
Can I get the CAPM for free?
Not entirely. The exam fee ($225-$300) is unavoidable, and free videos rarely give you a completion record for the 23 hours of education. The cheapest legitimate route is a Udemy CAPM course on sale plus the exam fee.
What jobs can you get with a CAPM?
PMI lists roles such as project coordinator, project administrator, project analyst, assistant project manager, project manager and technical project manager. In practice the CAPM helps most for entry-level coordinator and analyst roles, where it shows you know the vocabulary and the process.
