QUICK VERDICT
Our rating: 4.3 / 5
- Best for: analysts, FP&A and corporate finance staff, accountants moving into finance, and career changers who need to build Excel models from scratch
- Not for: anyone who needs a hiring credential for investment banking or asset management, or who wants a proctored, hard-to-pass designation
Bottom line: The FMVA is a practical, inexpensive way to learn three-statement modeling and valuation. Treat it as training that makes you better at the job and in technical interviews, not as a credential that gets you hired on its own.
I am Joseph Ugwu. I work as a surveillance and investigations analyst at a stock exchange, and I earned the FMVA from the Corporate Finance Institute (CFI) on 10 March 2021, paying for it myself. This review keeps my account of the program as I took it. Because CFI has changed its prices, course list and exam rules since then, the OnlineCourseing editor re-read every current fact on CFI’s own pages on 17 October 2026, and those facts are marked as such below.
Short answer: the FMVA taught me to build a working model from a blank sheet, it fit around a full-time job, and it helped me earn a promotion. It did not, and will not, impress every interviewer. Whether it is worth it for you depends on which of those two things you need.

Why I Enrolled in the FMVA
I started my career in finance without formal training in modeling. My job is to protect the integrity of a stock market: I monitor trading, investigate suspected manipulation and write up what I find. That work is better when you can value the company behind a stock and test whether a price move makes sense, and I could not do that well.
I wanted two things: the skill to build models myself, and a credential that showed I had it. I found CFI’s certifications on LinkedIn during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020. The FMVA was the one aimed squarely at modeling and valuation, it was online, and it cost a fraction of the alternatives, so I chose it.

What the FMVA Covers in 2026
CFI’s program page lists five steps. The counts below are CFI’s own; its help center article, updated in February 2026, still describes 14 core courses and 27 electives, so expect the list to keep moving.
Step 1: Prep courses (optional)
Up to nine courses that review Excel, accounting, reading financial statements and the math used in corporate finance. If your accounting is rusty, take them. The final exam draws on prep and core content.
Step 2: Core courses (15 required)
| Core course | Listed hours |
|---|---|
| Financial Analysis Fundamentals | 5h |
| Financial Modeling Guidelines | 3h |
| Introduction to 3-Statement Modeling | 6h |
| 3-Statement Modeling | 6h 30min |
| Auditing and Balancing a 3-Statement Model | 2h 30min |
| Operational Modeling | 8h |
| Introduction to Business Valuation | 6h 30min |
| DCF Valuation Modeling Fundamentals | 2h |
| Applied DCF Valuation Modeling | 7h |
| Comparable Valuation Fundamentals | 2h |
| Forecasting Techniques | 1h 30min |
| Scenario & Sensitivity Analysis in Excel | 1h 30min |
| Excel Data Visualization and Dashboards | 3h |
| PowerPoint & Pitchbooks | 4h 30min |
| Professional Ethics | 1h |
That is about 60 hours of listed course time. CFI’s 100-120 hour estimate includes exercises, assessments and the electives, which is why the two numbers differ.
Step 3: Electives (at least 3 of 12)
Electives cover topics such as monthly cash-flow modeling, advanced Excel formulas, comparable valuation analysis, mining and startup models, bank valuation, real estate modeling and sell-side equity research. The final exam does not test elective content, but CFI recommends taking at least one level 4 and one level 5 elective before you sit it. LBO and M&A modeling, which many older reviews list as FMVA content, are no longer in the FMVA course list; CFI teaches them elsewhere in the library. Our FMVA vs CFA comparison lists the current electives in more detail.
Steps 4 and 5: Case studies and AI practice labs (optional)
Case study challenges let you apply the material to a fuller problem, and the AI practice labs, which were not part of the program when I took it, show how to use AI tools across an analyst’s workflow.
When I enrolled in 2020 the structure was smaller: about 8 prep courses, 11 core courses and a choice of 3 from 10 electives. The core idea has not changed. You learn accounting and Excel, then build three-statement models, then value companies.
My Experience With the Content and Case Studies
I took every prep course even though they were optional. The Excel crash course and Math for Corporate Finance were the two I would recommend to anyone: I learned shortcuts I still use daily and the formulas behind discounting and annuities.
The core courses were where I learned the most. I built dynamically linked three-statement models from a blank workbook, projected income statements, balance sheets and cash flows several years out, and then stress-tested them with scenario and sensitivity analysis. The valuation courses walked through comparable companies, precedent transactions and DCF modeling, and each section finished with a dashboard that presented the result.
For electives I took four. Advanced Excel Formulas and the Amazon case study were the most useful. The instructors work through real companies step by step in Excel, and you follow along in your own file, which is what made the material stick.
Everything was online and self-paced, with no live classes. That suited me: I studied around a full-time job and a family, and nothing was scheduled.

The FMVA Final Exam: Format, Pass Mark and Retakes
You can sit the final exam once you have passed all core courses and at least three electives, scoring 80% or more on each course assessment. Course assessments allow unlimited attempts; the final exam does not.
- Format: 50 randomized multiple-choice questions, including Excel modeling case studies.
- Time: 3 hours, timed, and it cannot be paused once started.
- Pass mark: 70%. Results appear as soon as you finish.
- Retakes: a 30-day wait between attempts, and you need an active CFI subscription to retake. Once you pass, you cannot retake for a better score.
- Content: prep and core material only. CFI suggests reviewing 3-Statement Modeling, Operational Modeling, Comparable Valuation Fundamentals and DCF Valuation Modeling, plus WACC and the CAPM.
- Practice: unlimited practice exams before the real one.
I failed my first attempt. It was the month after my mother died, and I had stopped studying for several weeks. I waited, reviewed the models, and passed the second time. If you are working full-time, budget for the possibility of a second sitting and schedule the exam when you can give it three uninterrupted hours.
CORRECTION
An earlier version of this review said the FMVA’s “pass rate” was about 70%. That figure is the pass mark, the score you need. CFI does not publish how many candidates pass. We have corrected it here and in the FAQ.
How Long the FMVA Takes
CFI estimates 100 to 120 hours in total and says most learners finish in three to six months at 8 to 10 hours a week. A CFA charterholder quoted on CFI’s program page says the FMVA took him about 60 to 70 hours, and Reddit posters who studied full-time report finishing in one or two months.
| Hours per week | Approximate finish (at 110 hours) | Fits one year of membership? |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | About 5 months | Yes |
| 8-10 | 3 to 3.5 months | Yes |
| 15 | About 7 weeks | Yes, with time for other CFI certifications |
| 30 (full-time) | About 4 weeks | Yes |
My own timeline was longer. I started the free prep courses in August 2020, while CFI still offered some courses free, and began the core courses in October once I could pay. I passed the final exam in March 2021, about seven months in all, including the break and the failed first attempt. With steady study it would have been closer to four months. CFI ended its free courses in September 2024; today a free account gets you previews of every course and one full free course, Careers in Finance.
FMVA Cost in 2026: Self-Study vs Full-Immersion
You cannot buy the FMVA by itself. Every CFI certification comes with an annual membership, so the FMVA price is the membership price, and it also covers CFI’s six other certifications and its 15 specialization programs.
| Self-Study | Full-Immersion | |
|---|---|---|
| List price | $497/year | $847/year |
| Price on 17 Oct 2026 (30% off) | $347.90/year | $592.90/year |
| All 250+ courses, 7 certifications, 15 specializations | Yes | Yes |
| FMVA final exam and certificate | Yes | Yes |
| Email support | Technical and general questions | Premium email support |
| AI Tutor | No | Yes |
| Ask an Expert (5 finance questions a week) | No | Yes |
| Personalized review of your course models | No | Yes |
| Premium templates and guides | No | Yes |
| Partner discounts (PitchBook, FinChat, Koyfin, IBISWorld) | No | $300+ in discounts |
I paid $847 for Full-Immersion in 2020, when the plan included extras such as a printed certificate and entry to CFI’s modeling competition. Those are not on today’s plan card. If you are disciplined and do not need feedback on your models, Self-Study gets you the same courses, exam and certificate. Full-Immersion is worth the extra $245 a year only if you will use the expert questions and model reviews.
Three billing details matter more than the plan choice:
- It renews automatically. CFI bills annually and turns auto-renew on by default. You can switch it off in your account settings.
- There is no monthly plan. Finishing quickly does not save money; finishing after month 12 costs a second year.
- Refunds are unlikely. CFI’s Terms of Service say cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term with no refund for that term, and pre-paid fees are not refundable except where CFI’s refund policy or law requires. If CFI does refund you, it can revoke certificates earned during that subscription.
CFI also has cheaper routes for two groups. Students who sign up with a university email get 50% off either plan, $248.50 or $423.50 a year, and the rate renews at 50%. In India, CFI’s regional site sold an FMVA-only plan at ₹12,000 a year (billed as $125) on 17 October 2026, which covers the FMVA but not the other six certifications. CFI’s scholarship program also gives 50 people a free year of Self-Study twice a year. For a fuller breakdown, including what the certificate costs over two years, see our FMVA certification cost guide.

Is the FMVA Recognized by Employers?
This is the question most people searching “is FMVA worth it” are really asking, and the honest answer has two sides.
What CFI says
CFI says the FMVA is used by finance professionals in more than 170 countries and by finance teams at BlackRock, CIBC and ATB Financial for analyst development. It lists the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), the London Institute of Banking & Finance and the Higher Learning Commission among its accreditation and recognition partners, and notes that CFI courses can count toward CPE and CPD requirements. CFI itself says the FMVA is strongest for corporate finance, FP&A and financial analyst roles, and that people targeting front-office investment banking or private equity often pair it with specialist training.
What candidates say
Read the r/FinancialCareers threads on the FMVA and a pattern repeats. People who took it say they learned useful modeling techniques and did better in technical interviews. People on the hiring side say they value the skill, rarely the certificate: one investment banking commenter said nobody he interviewed with knew it, and several recommended Wall Street Prep or Breaking Into Wall Street for banking roles. Others reported concrete results, including one poster who said he negotiated a $5,000 raise after earning it.
CFI’s Trustpilot profile showed 4.8 out of 5 from 1,046 reviews on 14 October 2026, with 92% five-star. Note that CFI invites learners to review, usually right after they finish a course, and Trustpilot shows it has not replied to its negative reviews. The roughly 40 most recent reviews we read praised the practical, Excel-first teaching. The one recurring complaint was that the exam could be more engaging.
My experience matches the middle of that range. Since I added the FMVA to my profile I have had a steady stream of questions from people about modeling and valuation, and the skills, not the badge, earned my promotion.
FMVA Salary: What the Data Supports
Neither CFI nor anyone else publishes reliable pay data for FMVA holders specifically. The $121,000 “average FMVA salary” that circulated in older reviews, including an earlier version of this one, came from a CFI learner survey we can no longer verify, so we have removed it.
Role data is more useful, because your pay is set by the job, not the certificate. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported these May 2025 medians:
| Role (BLS) | Median pay, May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Financial and investment analysts | $102,740 |
| Financial analysts (all types) | $103,570 |
| Financial risk specialists | $117,330 |
| Financial managers | $166,570 |
Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read 14 October 2026. The FMVA can help you do these jobs well and move up within them. In my case, it and one other certification I earned the same year supported a promotion a few months after I finished. For more detail by role and region, see our FMVA salary guide and our financial analyst career guide.

FMVA vs CFA: The Short Version
| FMVA | CFA | |
|---|---|---|
| Study time | 100-120 hours | About 300 hours per level, three levels |
| Cost | $347.90-$592.90 for a year of CFI | $3,520-$4,570 in exam fees for all three levels, plus prep |
| Exams | Online, on demand; 70% to pass the final | Proctored; recent pass rates 43% (Level I), 45% (II), 50% (III) |
| Experience required | None | 4,000 hours of qualifying investment work over at least 36 months |
| Best for | Modeling, FP&A, corporate finance | Asset management, equity research, portfolio management |
They solve different problems. The CFA is a respected designation for investment management that does not teach you to build a model in Excel; the FMVA does exactly that and little else. Many people do both. Our full FMVA vs CFA comparison has the fee schedule, study plans and a pick for each career path.
FMVA vs Wall Street Prep and Breaking Into Wall Street
If your target is investment banking or private equity, compare the FMVA with the banking-focused programs before you buy. Wall Street Prep and Breaking Into Wall Street (BIWS) teach LBO, M&A and transaction modeling in more depth, and banks are more familiar with them; Reddit commenters on the hiring side named them more often. The FMVA is broader, cheaper per year and stronger for FP&A and corporate finance. Our CFI vs Wall Street Prep comparison and Wall Street Prep review cover the trade-offs, and how to get into investment banking explains where a modeling course fits in that recruiting process.
How Good Are CFI’s Instructors?
CFI’s instructors are practitioners rather than academics, and it shows in the material: the examples come from deals, budgets and board decks. The FMVA program page lists, among others:
- Tim Vipond, FMVA, CEO and co-founder, with a background in financial analysis and investment banking.
- Scott Powell, co-founder, who has spent about 30 years designing training for commercial banking, investment banking and capital markets clients.
- Duncan McKeen, EVP of financial modeling, who has taught modeling at CFI since 2014.
- Jeff Schmidt, VP of financial modeling, who taught modeling and valuation for more than a decade before joining CFI.
- Ryan Spendelow, FMVA, SVP of training and curriculum, based in London.
- Carl Seidman, an FP&A subject matter expert.
I found the teaching clear and patient, especially in Excel, where the instructors narrate every step. The trade-off is that you cannot ask them questions live; Self-Study members get email support, and only Full-Immersion members get expert answers and model feedback.
What I Liked and What I Didn’t
What I liked
- It is practical. You build models in Excel from the first core course, using real company data.
- It fits around a job. Everything is online and self-paced, and course assessments can be retaken.
- One price covers everything. The membership includes all seven CFI certifications (FMVA, FPAP, CMSA, CBCA, BIDA, FPWMP and FTIP) and the specializations, so you can add a second certification in the same year.
- The certificate does not expire. CFI says it is valid for life, with no maintenance fee.
What I didn’t like
- It is not rigorous enough to be a strong signal. Unlimited assessment attempts and an online final make it easier to earn than proctored designations, which is part of why some employers discount it.
- Recognition varies by field. It carries more weight in corporate finance and FP&A than in investment banking or asset management.
- The billing works against slow finishers. Annual, auto-renewing plans with no refund for the current term mean a stalled year is paid for anyway.
Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Take the FMVA
| Take the FMVA if you… | Look elsewhere if you… |
|---|---|
| work in FP&A, corporate finance or as a financial analyst and want to build models yourself | need a credential that recruiters for investment banking or asset management screen for (consider the CFA, WSP or BIWS) |
| are a student or career changer who needs structured modeling practice before interviews | already build three-statement and DCF models daily and want a harder test of that skill |
| want CPE-eligible training as an accountant moving into finance | cannot commit 100+ hours within a year of paying |
| plan to add a second CFI certification such as FPAP in the same membership | want live teaching or a fixed cohort |
Is the FMVA Worth It? Final Verdict
For me, yes. The FMVA gave me a skill I use every week, and it came during the hardest period of my life, which is part of why I value it. For you, it is worth it if you will use the modeling and want to learn it in a structured way for less than $600 a year. It is not worth it if you are paying mainly for the letters after your name, because some of the employers you most want to impress will not know them.
Our rating stays at 4.3 out of 5: strong on practical skills and price, weaker on rigor and recognition outside corporate finance. If you are still choosing between CFI’s programs, our guide to every CFI certification and CFI review compare them, and best financial modeling courses ranks the alternatives.
How Hard Is the FMVA?
Harder than its reputation in places, easier than a proctored designation overall. The course assessments need 80% but allow unlimited attempts, so nobody fails a course for good. The final exam is the real test: 50 questions in three hours, including Excel case studies where you build or fix part of a model against the clock. CFI’s own guide suggests no more than three minutes a question and about 45 minutes per case study.
What makes it hard is the modeling, not the theory. If you can already link a three-statement model and run a DCF, you will find the core courses quick. If you cannot, Operational Modeling and Applied DCF Valuation Modeling are where most of your hours go. Joseph failed his first attempt after several weeks away from study, then passed on the second, so plan for a break in momentum. Compared with the CFA, which takes about 300 hours per level and recent pass rates of 43% to 50%, the FMVA is a far smaller hill.
- Easier: no prerequisites, online, no scheduling, unlimited course-assessment attempts, unlimited practice exams.
- Harder: a timed Excel case section, a 30-day wait after a failed final, and a retake that needs an active membership.
- Best preparation: rebuild the 3-Statement Modeling and DCF models from a blank sheet without the video, then take the practice exam until it feels routine.
FMVA vs FPAP: Which CFI Certification First?
The FPAP (Financial Planning & Analysis Professional) is CFI’s newer certification, and the same membership covers both. On 17 October 2026 CFI’s program pages showed:
| FMVA | FPAP | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Three-statement modeling, DCF and comparable valuation | Budgeting, forecasting, FP&A models and business partnering |
| Courses | 45 in total, 18 required | 46 in total, 28 required |
| Required | 15 core + at least 3 of 12 electives | 25 core + at least 3 of 14 electives |
| Final exam pass mark | 70% | 70% |
| CFI rating | 4.9 from 36,924 ratings | 4.9 from 25,212 ratings |
| Best for | Analysts, banking, corporate development | FP&A and corporate finance teams |
If you are not sure where you will work, start with the FMVA: its modeling is the foundation the FPAP builds on. If you already work in FP&A, the FPAP is closer to your job, and because the membership covers both, you can do the FMVA’s modeling courses alongside it. Our CFI FPAP review covers it in detail.
How to Get the FMVA: Step by Step
- 1. Open a free CFI account and watch the introductory videos to check the teaching style suits you.
- 2. Choose a plan. Self-Study ($347.90 at the current discount) is enough for most people; students and learners in India have cheaper plans. Our FMVA cost guide compares every option.
- 3. Sign the CFI Honor Pledge. CFI requires it to receive and keep the certification.
- 4. Take the prep courses you need, especially Excel and accounting if either is rusty.
- 5. Pass the 15 core courses and at least 3 electives, scoring 80% or more on each course assessment.
- 6. Take the practice exam until you are comfortable, then sit the final: 50 questions, 3 hours, 70% to pass.
- 7. Download your certificate. It is a blockchain-verified digital certificate, valid for life.
What FMVA Learners and Hiring Managers Said in 2026
We re-read the 2026 FMVA threads on Reddit’s r/FinancialCareers, r/FPandA, r/financialmodelling and r/cfaindia in October 2026. The picture has not changed much since Joseph took the program in 2021, but it is sharper:
- It helps most early on. A commenter who screens candidates for corporate credit roles said the FMVA is a positive differentiator mainly for people with under two years of experience; for more experienced candidates they expect the skills to show without it.
- Recognition is uneven. In US FP&A threads, commenters said few hiring managers know the FMVA, and that the CPA, MBA and CFA are what move a resume. A UK investment banker said most UK banks train analysts with Financial Edge, not CFI.
- The skills and templates get used. Learners who finished it, including one who did so in two to three months while working, said the Excel shortcuts and model templates were worth it on the job, and one told their own junior analysts to take it.
- Some find it too shallow. A minority said it only scratches the surface of real modeling. That fits this review’s verdict: it is a strong foundation, not the deep end.
- Speed varies widely. One poster finished in about a month with a business background; most working learners report two to four months.
None of that changes the verdict below. It sharpens who the FMVA is for: people who will use the modeling, early in a finance career, in corporate finance, FP&A or analyst roles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the FMVA worth it in 2026?
For most people who build or review financial models at work, yes. It costs $347.90 to $592.90 for a year of CFI access at the 30% discount CFI showed on 17 October 2026, takes 100 to 120 hours by CFI’s estimate, and teaches three-statement modeling, DCF and comparable valuation in Excel. It is weaker as a hiring signal for investment banking, where interviewers rarely ask about it.
Is the FMVA certification recognized by employers?
It is recognized as practical modeling training rather than as a professional designation like the CFA charter. CFI says finance teams at BlackRock, CIBC and ATB Financial use it for analyst development and that NASBA recognizes CFI courses for CPE credit. On Reddit, several hiring-side commenters say they value the skills but rarely the certificate itself.
How much does the FMVA cost?
The FMVA is not sold on its own. It comes with a CFI membership: Self-Study lists at $497 a year and Full-Immersion at $847 a year. On 17 October 2026 CFI showed both at 30% off, $347.90 and $592.90. Memberships are billed annually and auto-renew.
Can I get a refund on CFI’s FMVA?
Plan on no. CFI’s Terms of Service (updated 25 August 2026) say cancellation takes effect at the end of your paid term, you get no refund for the current term, and pre-paid fees are not refundable except where its terms, refund policy or law require. A refunded subscription can also mean CFI revokes certificates earned during it.
How long does it take to complete the FMVA?
CFI estimates 100 to 120 hours. Most learners finish in three to six months at 8 to 10 hours a week, and people studying full-time report finishing in one or two months. Joseph took about seven months in 2020-21, including a month-long break.
What is the FMVA final exam pass mark?
70%. The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions, including Excel modeling case studies, and a three-hour time limit. You must also score at least 80% on each required course assessment first. CFI does not publish a pass rate.
Can you retake the FMVA final exam?
Yes. If you fail, you wait 30 days before the next attempt, and you need an active CFI subscription to retake. Once you pass, you cannot retake it to improve your score.
Does the FMVA expire?
No. CFI says the certification stays valid for life with no renewal or maintenance fee. Access to courses, updates and templates ends when your membership lapses.
What is the difference between Self-Study and Full-Immersion?
Both include every course, all seven certifications and the exams. Full-Immersion adds an AI tutor, expert answers to five finance questions a week, personalized feedback on your course models, premium templates and more than $300 in partner discounts (PitchBook, FinChat, Koyfin, IBISWorld).
Is the FMVA harder than the CFA?
No. The CFA takes about 300 hours per level across three proctored exams, with recent pass rates of 43% to 50%. The FMVA is about 100 to 120 hours with unlimited attempts on course assessments and an online final exam.
Is the FMVA exam proctored?
CFI’s FMVA exam guide does not mention proctoring: it is an online exam with no scheduling. CFI’s Terms of Service, updated 25 August 2026, let it designate any assessment as a proctored exam, which can involve identity verification, remote proctoring software and a webcam and microphone, so read the exam instructions before you start.
How much is the FMVA in India?
On CFI’s India site on 17 October 2026, an FMVA-only plan cost 12,000 rupees a year (billed as $125 USD). It covers the FMVA but not CFI’s other certifications. The full Self-Study plan was $323.05 a year there.
Is the FMVA free?
No. A free CFI account includes introductory videos and the Careers in Finance course, but the FMVA courses, exam and certificate need a paid membership. CFI’s scholarship program gives 50 applicants a free year of Self-Study twice a year; past paid members are not eligible.
Should I do the FMVA or the FPAP first?
The FMVA, unless you already work in FP&A. Its three-statement modeling and valuation are the foundation the FPAP builds on, and one CFI membership covers both.

I recently finished FMVA course and it really helped in my professional career. The only thing I didn’t like is it could have more premium templates.
