10 Best MasterClass Cooking Classes 2026 (Ranked + Reviewed)

Last updated: 14 October 2026 (every class re-checked on masterclass.com that day). Written by Josh Hutcheson, OnlineCourseing editor. See our review methodology.

Quick picks: If you want one cooking class on MasterClass, start with Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking I, the most broadly useful set of fundamentals on the platform (20 lessons). For technique-obsessed home cooks, Thomas Keller’s Cooking Techniques is the deepest: three classes and 75 lessons. For Italian, Massimo Bottura. For Mexican, Gabriela Cámara. For BBQ, Aaron Franklin.

Cost: $120 a year (Standard) includes all 10 classes below and 200+ others. Refund: 30 days on a first purchase made on the MasterClass website. See MasterClass plans →

MasterClass earns its reputation hardest in the culinary category. The production quality (multi-camera kitchen shoots, professional food styling, location filming) turns instructional cooking videos into something closer to a food documentary. You watch working chefs cook, with the kind of cinematography you would expect from a Chef’s Table episode.

MasterClass cooking classes share the platform’s main limit: they teach the why and the technique, and execution is on you. There are no graded assignments and no instructor feedback on your dishes. If you want feedback on what you cook, Rouxbe lists instructor feedback among its membership features; YesChef is the closest match to MasterClass’s style with more depth per cuisine.

For inspiration, technique demonstrations and a look at what mastery looks like at this level, MasterClass is the strongest general subscription in this category. On 14 October 2026 the Food and Drink category page was headed “30 Food & Drink Instructors” and showed 27 class cards, 22 of them cooking or baking.

How we ranked these classes

Each class is scored on five dimensions:

  • Instructor caliber: Michelin stars, James Beard recognition, an established working career
  • Practical applicability: can a home cook actually make the recipes
  • Lesson depth: number of lessons, total running time and the range of techniques covered
  • Production quality: even within MasterClass’s high baseline, some classes are visually stronger
  • Beginner-friendliness: how accessible the techniques are without prior cooking experience

The list below is ranked for new MasterClass subscribers who want practical home cooking, not chefs looking for advanced technique (Thomas Keller’s classes would top a chef-targeted ranking). We re-checked every class’s lesson plan, lesson count and running time on masterclass.com on 14 October 2026.

The 10 best MasterClass cooking classes (ranked)

1. Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking I

Best for: Beginners and intermediate home cooks who want fundamentals taught with personality. Length: 20 lessons, 3h 54m. What it covers: Kitchen layout, vegetables and herbs, knife skills, “Elevated Scrambled Eggs”, breaking down a whole chicken and a whole fish, pasta dough, lobster ravioli and beef Wellington.

Ramsay’s first class is the right starting point for almost any subscriber. It alternates “Method” lessons (knife skills, breaking down a chicken, making and rolling pasta dough) with “Make” lessons that put each method to work, from a poached egg on brioche to chicken suprême, salmon with shellfish minestrone and lobster ravioli. It ends on a 24-minute beef Wellington lesson.

The follow-up, Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking II: Restaurant Recipes at Home (15 lessons, 4h 14m), is a run of restaurant dishes rather than methods: crispy duck, rack of lamb, cauliflower steak, three Szechuan-style chicken dishes, sesame-crusted tuna and a raspberry soufflé. Watch it second.

2. Thomas Keller’s Cooking Techniques

Best for: Serious home cooks who want to master technique as well as recipes. Length: 75 lessons, about 17h 50m across three classes. What it covers: Class I: vegetables, eggs and pasta (36 lessons). Class II: meats, stocks and sauces (22). Class III: seafood, sous vide and desserts (17).

MasterClass describes Keller as “the most decorated Michelin star chef in America”; he runs The French Laundry and Per Se. His classes are the closest thing in the catalog to a culinary-school technique course. The first class alone runs 36 lessons and almost seven hours: kitchen setup, ten vegetable techniques from big-pot blanching to confit, eggs from mayonnaise and hollandaise to a French omelet, and fresh pasta through agnolotti and gnocchi.

Classes II and III add roasting, braising, stocks and the classic sauces, then fish, lobster, sous vide and three desserts. That is about 18 hours of video, so most people work through it over several weeks.

Read our full Thomas Keller MasterClass review for what each of the three classes covers.

3. Massimo Bottura Teaches Modern Italian Cooking

Best for: Anyone who loves Italian food and wants to see tradition reworked. Length: 14 lessons, 3h 46m. What it covers: An evolution of pesto, tortellini in broth, the Emilia Burger, passatelli, tagliatelle with hand-chopped ragù, pumpkin risotto, sole in parchment and a “Better Than Panettone” soufflé.

Bottura is the chef of the three-Michelin-star Osteria Francescana in Modena, and his class reflects how he cooks there: start from a classic, then question it. The tortellini lessons (broth and sauce, then dough, filling and assembly) and the hand-chopped ragù are the most useful for a home cook; the “spin-painted” beet is the most restaurant-like.

Two bonus lessons show a tasting and the stories behind two Osteria Francescana dishes, which suits viewers who want the thinking as much as the recipes.

4. Gabriela Cámara Teaches Mexican Cooking

Best for: Cooks who want Mexican home cooking beyond Tex-Mex. Length: 13 lessons, 3h 26m. What it covers: Masa and corn tortillas, raw and charred salsas, tacos al pastor, pescado a la talla, huevos rancheros, tuna tostadas, golden quesadillas, aguachile and guava tamales.

Cámara is the chef of Contramar in Mexico City. Her class starts where Mexican cooking starts, with masa and tortillas, and the salsa lessons (raw salsa verde and salsa brava, then a charred salsa tatemada) are the part most home cooks will use every week.

The recipes are achievable in an ordinary kitchen. Fresh masa or good masa harina is the one ingredient worth tracking down before you start.

5. Aaron Franklin Teaches Texas-Style BBQ

Best for: Anyone with a smoker, or thinking of buying one. Length: 16 lessons, 4h 36m. What it covers: Fire and smoke, choosing wood, pork butt, pork ribs, beef selection, a 34-minute brisket trim, a three-part brisket smoke and slice, sauce, and offset smokers.

MasterClass calls Franklin “the James Beard Award-winning owner of Franklin Barbecue.” About 40 percent of the running time is brisket: selecting the beef, trimming it, three lessons on the smoke itself and one on slicing. If brisket is why you are here, no class in the catalog goes deeper.

The equipment requirement is real. Most lessons assume a smoker, and one is specifically about offset smokers. The grilled steak and broccolini lesson is the exception that works on a regular grill.

6. Dominique Ansel Teaches French Pastry Fundamentals

Best for: Bakers ready to move from American baking to French pastry technique. Length: 17 lessons, 3h 37m. What it covers: Mini madeleines, a fruit tart (sablé shell, pastry cream, quick jam, two finishes), a chocolate cake with mousse and Swiss meringues, chocolate bonbons and the croissant.

Ansel, the creator of the Cronut, built most of the class around projects (a fruit tart, a chocolate cake, bonbons), each split into base, filling and finishing lessons. That structure makes the techniques reusable: once you can make the sablé shell and pastry cream, you can make most fruit tarts.

The 32-minute croissant lesson is the centerpiece. The Cronut itself gets a five-minute case study about how it was invented, not a recipe, so buy the class for the fundamentals in its name.

7. Yotam Ottolenghi Teaches Modern Middle Eastern Cooking

Best for: Vegetable-forward cooks and fans of his cookbooks. Length: 26 lessons, 5h 41m. What it covers: Mezze (muhammara, hummus, pea spread with marinated feta), a brunch spread with green shakshuka, vegetable dishes, four main courses and eleven short lessons on condiments.

Ottolenghi’s is one of the longest single classes in the cooking catalog. It is organized as spreads, so you learn to cook a table of dishes that work together rather than one plate at a time.

The condiment lessons are the hidden value: labneh, dukkah, rose harissa, quick shatta, confit garlic oil and tahini sauce each get a short lesson, and they are the “flavor bombs” his recipes lean on.

8. Alice Waters Teaches the Art of Home Cooking

Best for: Cooks interested in seasonal, market-led cooking as much as technique. Length: 17 lessons, 3h 47m. What it covers: The farmer’s market, a vegetable lunch, kitchen tools, a well-stocked pantry, salsa verde, salads, a galette and ravioli from Chez Panisse, and a market-fresh dinner from planning to serving.

MasterClass describes Waters as the James Beard Award-winning founder of Chez Panisse who “started America’s farm-to-table revolution.” Her class is about choosing and respecting ingredients more than about knife work or formal sauces. The pantry lessons run almost an hour between them.

It works best once you can already cook and want to cook more thoughtfully. It also suits vegetarians well.

Read our full Alice Waters MasterClass review for a deeper breakdown.

9. Wolfgang Puck Teaches Cooking

Best for: Cooks who want classic restaurant technique with a California accent. Length: 16 lessons, 3h 47m. What it covers: Training your palate, tuna sashimi, veal stock and demi-glace, pepper steak with red wine sauce, roast chicken with mustard port sauce, béchamel, roasted branzino, oatmeal risotto, seafood gazpacho and cocktails.

MasterClass describes Puck as “the five-time James Beard Award winner behind over 100 restaurants.” His class mixes recipes with sauce fundamentals (veal stock and demi-glace, béchamel) and three lessons on his journey and his business and culinary philosophy.

The style is more classic than modern. That suits a cook who wants dependable dinner-party dishes, and suits less well someone looking for new ideas.

10. Dominique Crenn Teaches Modern Vegetarian Cooking

Best for: Vegetable-driven cooks who want fine-dining technique. Length: 14 lessons, 3h 59m. What it covers: Tomato and melon, each prepared three ways (enhanced, illuminated, evolved), then leeks, mushroom, asparagus, seasonal vegetables, cabbage and cheese.

Crenn’s restaurant, Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, holds three Michelin stars, and the class shows how she builds a tasting menu from vegetables. Each ingredient gets a long lesson; cabbage alone runs almost 28 minutes.

It is more about how to think about a vegetable than about a set of weeknight recipes. Take it after Keller or Waters rather than as a first cooking class.

Should you subscribe just for cooking?

If cooking is the only category you will watch, the math depends on how many classes you finish. At $120 a year for Standard, six cooking classes work out to $20 a class, less than a single restaurant cookbook. Twelve take it to $10 a class.

For most subscribers, MasterClass works as a cooking-plus-something subscription: you watch the cooking classes for instruction, then pull in a few classes from other categories over the year. That is where the per-class math starts to favor the subscription.

What MasterClass costs (October 2026)

MasterClass plan Price Devices at once Offline downloads
Standard $120 a year ($10/month, billed annually) 1 No
Plus $180 a year ($15/month, billed annually) 2 Yes
Premium $240 a year ($20/month, billed annually) 6 Yes

All three plans include every class, cooking included. MasterClass does not sell single classes: every class page reads “Get this class and 200+ more.” The 30-day money-back guarantee covers first-time purchases made on the MasterClass website; renewals and memberships bought through Apple or Google follow those stores’ rules (our cancellation and refund guide has the steps). Prices are from MasterClass’s checkout on 14 October 2026, when its homepage read “Starting at $10/month, billed annually” and no sale was running. The Extended Labor Day 2026 offer (50% off annual memberships) ended on 10 September, and MasterClass’s promotion terms say a discounted membership renews at the then-current full price. MasterClass ran 50% off annual memberships for Black Friday in both 2024 and 2025 (see our Black Friday tracker), and a gift membership renews automatically after its first year unless the recipient turns renewal off.

Ramsay fans should know about one separate product. MasterClass On Call offers an AI coach built with Gordon Ramsay; it is a different subscription (its page showed the beta “starting at $7.50/month” on 9 October 2026) and it is not part of the classes above.

Cooking-specific alternatives to MasterClass

If you are weighing a credential rather than technique classes, our guide to the best online culinary schools compares accredited programs and their real costs, and our Rouxbe review covers its chef-graded certification courses.

  • YesChef: chef-led video classes in a similar cinematic style, with more depth per cuisine. On 14 October 2026 its fall sale took 30% off: $168 for the first year instead of $240, or $384.99 for lifetime access instead of $549.99. It has seven full chef classes of 5 to 7.5 hours each. See our YesChef vs MasterClass comparison, or our YesChef review.
  • Rouxbe Online Culinary School: a structured curriculum rather than a video library. Membership is $30 for the first month then $15 a month, or $129 a year, with a 7-day free trial that needs no card (rouxbe.com, re-checked 14 October 2026). Members can ask Rouxbe’s chef-instructors questions in every course and earn a Certificate of Completion.
  • America’s Test Kitchen: its former Online Cooking School now runs as ATK Classes, built on tested recipes. Classes is an add-on to an ATK Essential membership: $39.99 a year, or $89.99 a year bundled with Essential, with a 14-day free trial (ATK help center, 14 October 2026). We have no affiliate relationship with it.
  • Free YouTube content: several MasterClass instructors, Ramsay among them, publish a lot of free cooking video, and MasterClass posts trailers and sample lessons for every class.

For a fuller alternatives breakdown, see our MasterClass alternatives guide or our ranking of the best online cooking classes across platforms. Bakers should also see our best online baking classes.

Final recommendation

If you can only watch one MasterClass cooking class: Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking I. It is the most beginner-friendly and covers the widest range of basic technique.

If you will watch three: Ramsay I, then Bottura for Italian or Cámara for Mexican (pick the cuisine you cook more), then Keller’s first class for technique depth.

If you are a baker first and a cook second, make Dominique Ansel your priority.

If you have a smoker: Aaron Franklin first; everything else after.

For any of these to make sense, you need an active MasterClass membership. See our worth-it analysis if you are still on the fence about the platform, or MasterClass vs Coursera if you are weighing other learning subscriptions.

A four-week MasterClass cooking plan

Lesson counts and running times make it possible to plan, so here is a month that uses one membership well. It assumes two to four hours of watching and two or three cooking sessions a week.

Week Watch Cook Time to watch
1 Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking I, lessons 1 to 9 (kitchen layout, vegetables, knife skills, eggs, chicken) Elevated Scrambled Eggs; a whole chicken broken down into chicken suprême 1 hr 37 min
2 Ramsay I, lessons 10 to 20 (fish and shellfish, pasta dough, lobster ravioli, beef Wellington) Fresh pasta twice; a whole fish broken down 2 hr 17 min
3 One cuisine: Gabriela Cámara (13 lessons, 3 hr 26 min) or Massimo Bottura (14 lessons, 3 hr 46 min) Tortillas and two salsas, or tagliatelle with hand-chopped ragù About 3.5 hr
4 Thomas Keller Cooking Techniques I, the vegetable and egg lessons Three vegetable techniques and a French omelet Part of its 6 hr 53 min

After that, follow your appetite: Aaron Franklin if you have a smoker, Dominique Ansel if you bake, Yotam Ottolenghi or Dominique Crenn if you cook mostly vegetables. Running the plan inside the first 30 days also tells you whether to keep the membership while the money-back guarantee still applies.

Week 1 and 2 times add up the lesson lengths MasterClass lists for Ramsay’s class; week 3 uses each class’s listed running time (read 14 October 2026).

What MasterClass members say, and how to avoid the renewal surprise

People who search for MasterClass cooking classes also ask whether MasterClass is free, how much it costs per year and whether it can be trusted. The short answers: it is a paid annual membership with a 30-day refund window on a first purchase, it is a real service, and its billing generates most of the complaints.

MasterClass’s Trustpilot page had a TrustScore of 1.6 from 1,178 reviews when we read it on 13 October 2026. Trustpilot notes that MasterClass has not invited customers to review recently, so the page leans toward people with a problem. Of the 60 most recent reviews (March to September 2026), 49 gave one star, and most of those were about billing rather than classes: an annual membership that renewed automatically, trouble finding where to cancel, support handled by a chatbot, and 50% refund offers after a renewal had gone through. The content complaints that did come up said some classes felt basic. The happy reviewers praised the instructors and the production.

None of that is specific to cooking, but it should change how you buy:

  • It is an annual charge. “Starting at $10/month, billed annually” means $120 taken once a year, and the membership renews each year until you cancel the renewal.
  • The refund window is 30 days. MasterClass refunds a first-time purchase made on its website within 30 days of the original transaction. Renewals, redeemed gifts and MasterClass At Work accounts are not covered, and changing plans does not restart the 30 days.
  • Watch for the reminder email. MasterClass says it sends a renewal notice 30 days before the renewal date. If you only want one year, turn auto-renewal off when it arrives, or on the day you join.
  • Sale prices do not carry over. MasterClass’s promotion terms say a discounted membership renews at the then-current full, non-promotional price.

Our MasterClass cancellation guide walks through the steps, including memberships bought through Apple, Google Play, Amazon or Roku, which those stores handle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best MasterClass cooking class for beginners?

Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking I. Its 20 lessons (3 hours 54 minutes) start with kitchen layout, vegetables and knife skills and build to lobster ravioli and beef Wellington, so a beginner never has to guess what an earlier lesson meant.

Is Thomas Keller’s MasterClass worth it?

For a serious home cook, yes. Keller has three classes, 75 lessons and about 17 hours 50 minutes in all: vegetables, eggs and pasta; meats, stocks and sauces; and seafood, sous vide and desserts. It is the most thorough technique teaching in MasterClass’s cooking catalog, and it makes most sense after you have the basics.

How many cooking classes does MasterClass have?

On 14 October 2026 MasterClass’s Food and Drink page showed 27 class cards under a heading of 30 instructors. 22 are cooking or baking classes, counting Thomas Keller’s three and Gordon Ramsay’s two separately; the rest cover wine, cocktails, gardening and how we eat.

Does MasterClass give a certificate for its cooking classes?

No. The cooking classes are video lessons with no certificate. MasterClass sells a separate Certificates program aimed at professional skills, priced per course. If you want a cooking credential, Rouxbe is the online option to look at.

How much does MasterClass cost for cooking classes?

The same as for everything else: $120 a year for Standard, $180 for Plus and $240 for Premium, each including every class. There is no cooking-only plan and MasterClass does not sell single classes.

Can you actually learn to cook from MasterClass?

You can learn technique, with limits. MasterClass shows how the chefs cook, but nobody checks your food. For feedback on what you cook, Rouxbe is the more direct route.

Are MasterClass cooking classes good for vegetarians?

Yes. Dominique Crenn’s class is entirely vegetable-led (tomato, melon, leeks, mushroom, asparagus, cabbage), Alice Waters’s class centers on the market and the garden, and many of Yotam Ottolenghi’s 26 lessons are vegetable dishes and condiments.

Do I need a smoker for Aaron Franklin’s BBQ class?

For most of it, yes. The brisket, pork butt and rib lessons are built around a smoker, and one lesson covers offset smokers specifically. The grilled steak and broccolini lesson works on an ordinary grill.

What is the difference between Gordon Ramsay’s two MasterClass cooking classes?

Cooking I (20 lessons) teaches methods: knife skills, breaking down a chicken and a fish, pasta dough, then dishes such as lobster ravioli and beef Wellington. Cooking II: Restaurant Recipes at Home (15 lessons) is a set of restaurant dishes, including crispy duck, rack of lamb, three Szechuan-style chicken dishes, sesame-crusted tuna and a raspberry souffle.

Is there a MasterClass Black Friday sale?

MasterClass took 50% off annual memberships for Black Friday in 2024 and 2025. On 14 October 2026 no sale was running. Our Black Friday page tracks the 2026 offer once it is announced.

Can you preview MasterClass cooking classes for free?

Each class page has a trailer and usually a sample lesson. The surer way to judge a class is the 30-day money-back guarantee on a first purchase made on the MasterClass website.

Are MasterClass cooking classes worth it?

If you will cook along with several of them, yes: $120 a year covers every cooking class, and six classes work out to $20 each. They teach technique and recipes well but nobody checks your food, so pair them with practice, or look at Rouxbe if you want chef feedback.

Is MasterClass a scam?

No. MasterClass is a real subscription service with 200+ classes, including the cooking classes above. Most complaints on its Trustpilot page are about billing: annual memberships that renewed automatically and refund requests after the 30-day window. Turn off auto-renewal in your account settings if you only want one year.

Does MasterClass have a José Andrés cooking class?

Yes, as a three-episode Original Series rather than a full class: Food, Stories, and Connections, about 1 hour 20 minutes, with recipes such as a presidential beef stew and two kinds of arepas. Sohla El-Waylly’s Breakfast All Day is another three-episode series in the same category.

Does MasterClass renew automatically, and how do I cancel?

Yes. Memberships are billed annually and renew each year until you cancel the renewal, which you do in the Settings page of your MasterClass account on the website (not in the app). MasterClass emails a renewal reminder 30 days before the renewal date. It refunds a first purchase within 30 days, but renewal charges are not refundable, so cancel the renewal before the renewal date if you do not want a second year.
