Last updated: October 2026. Written by Josh Hutcheson. Every course was re-checked on its provider’s page on 14 October 2026; certification details come from Databricks, Google Cloud, AWS and Microsoft on the same day. See our review methodology.
Big data courses teach you to store and process datasets too large for one computer, mostly with Apache Spark and the cloud platforms built around it. In 2026 the best place to start is Spark, not Hadoop: Spark 4.2.0 shipped on 14 July 2026, and most data engineering job ads ask for Spark, SQL and a cloud platform. Hadoop is still maintained (version 3.5.0 came out in April 2026), but it is now background knowledge rather than the skill employers screen for.
We re-checked every course on this page on 14 October 2026, re-ranked them on that basis, and added the certifications that big data jobs ask for, a learning path, and the free tools you can practice on. The previous version led with a Hadoop course; that course is still good, but it is no longer the first thing to learn.

Big data usually means data that is too large, too fast or too varied for a single database or spreadsheet: clickstreams, sensor readings, transaction logs, social media. Courses often describe it with the “Vs”: volume, velocity and variety, sometimes extended to veracity and value.
A big data course teaches three things:
- Distributed storage: how data is split across machines (HDFS in Hadoop; object storage such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure Data Lake today).
- Distributed processing: how computation runs in parallel. This was MapReduce; today it is mostly Spark (DataFrames and Spark SQL), plus streaming tools such as Kafka.
- Platforms: where companies run it now, usually Databricks, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, AWS or Microsoft Fabric, with the “lakehouse” pattern combining a data lake and a warehouse.
You will meet two job families. Big data engineering builds the pipelines (data engineers). Big data analytics queries the results (data analysts and scientists working in Spark SQL or a warehouse). Most courses below lean toward engineering; we flag the ones that suit analysts.
Do you still need to learn Hadoop?
Short answer: learn the ideas, not the stack. Hadoop introduced the core concepts (splitting data across machines and sending computation to the data), and many older systems still run on it, so the vocabulary appears in interviews. But new projects rarely start on Hadoop clusters. A data engineer on Reddit summed up the common view: learn Spark, which can read the same data without Hive, and pick up Hadoop only if your employer uses it.
That is why the courses below put Spark first. Two still cover Hadoop well if you need it: IBM’s Introduction to Big Data with Spark and Hadoop (short) and Frank Kane’s Hadoop course (thorough).

Reddit’s data engineering community is pragmatic about these: people preparing for Databricks certifications mostly recommend Databricks’ own Academy courses and its free practice environment, with a paid prep course for exam-style questions.
Free ways to learn big data
- Databricks Free Edition. Databricks’ free tier replaced Community Edition. It is free to use with smaller compute sizes and fair-use limits, which is plenty for learning Spark and SQL.
- Run Spark locally. You do not need a cluster to learn Spark. A Spark engineer on Reddit advised installing it standalone on a laptop and practicing reading, transforming and writing data.
- Learning Spark, 2nd edition. Databricks has offered this O’Reilly book as a free download, and Reddit users recommend it as enough to become productive.
- Cloud free tiers. Google Cloud offers new customers $300 in free credits, and BigQuery has a free sandbox for querying public datasets.
- Coursera previews and financial aid. Most Coursera courses on this page can be previewed before you pay; see our Coursera financial aid guide.
How to learn big data: a step-by-step path
| Step | What to learn | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SQL and Python (pandas) | SQL courses; the first IBM Data Engineering courses |
| 2 | Big data concepts | UCSD Introduction to Big Data |
| 3 | Spark DataFrames and Spark SQL | Frank Kane’s Spark 4 course or DataCamp’s PySpark track |
| 4 | One cloud platform and the lakehouse | Databricks Free Edition, Google Cloud specialization or Fabric DP-700 |
| 5 | Streaming and orchestration | Kafka and Airflow courses |
| 6 | A certification and a portfolio pipeline | Databricks, Google, AWS or Microsoft exam; a pipeline built on a public dataset |
For portfolio ideas built on public data, see our data analytics project ideas; the bike-share, flight delay and ecommerce event projects there are large enough to justify Spark.
Big data analytics vs. big data engineering
| Big data analytics | Big data engineering | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Answer questions from large datasets | Build the systems that move and store the data |
| Daily tools | Spark SQL, BigQuery, Databricks SQL, Tableau or Power BI | Spark, Kafka, Airflow, cloud storage, Delta Lake or Iceberg |
| Courses on this page | UCSD intro, DataCamp PySpark track, Google Cloud specialization | IBM Data Engineering, Frank Kane Spark 4, Fabric DP-700, Databricks prep |

If you mainly want to analyze data, a warehouse such as BigQuery or Snowflake plus strong SQL often matters more than Spark. See our Snowflake courses.
Big data careers and salary
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track “big data engineer” as a separate occupation. The closest categories it reports (median pay May 2025, growth 2025 to 2035):
| Occupation (BLS) | Median pay | Projected growth |
|---|---|---|
| Data scientists | $120,230 | +35% |
| Software developers | $135,980 | +10% (with QA analysts and testers) |
Data engineers are usually counted among software developers or database roles. Pay depends heavily on the platform skills above, so a cloud or Databricks certification plus a working pipeline in your portfolio does more for an application than a general big data certificate. Frequently asked questions
What is the best big data course for beginners?
For a career, the IBM Data Engineering Professional Certificate on Coursera, which starts with Python and SQL and covers Hadoop and Spark (16 courses, 4.6 from 62,686 reviews in October 2026). For a short introduction, UC San Diego’s Introduction to Big Data takes about 2 weeks.
Is Hadoop still worth learning in 2026?
Learn the concepts, but put Spark first. Apache Hadoop is still maintained (3.5.0 was released in April 2026) and many older systems use it, but new data platforms are built on Spark, cloud storage and lakehouse tools such as Databricks.
Can I learn big data for free?
Yes. Databricks Free Edition gives you a free Spark and SQL environment with fair-use limits, Spark runs locally on a laptop, Google Cloud offers new customers $300 in credits, and many Coursera courses can be previewed for free.
Which big data certification is best?
The Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate is the most portable because Databricks runs on all three major clouds; it costs $200 for 45 questions in 90 minutes. If your employer uses one cloud, take that cloud’s data engineer exam: AWS DEA-C01 ($150), Google Professional Data Engineer ($200) or Microsoft DP-700 ($165).
What programming language do I need for big data?
SQL and Python cover most work. Spark supports Python (PySpark), SQL, Scala and Java; Scala still appears in some older codebases, which is why Frank Kane offers a Scala version of his Spark course.
How long does it take to learn big data?
With SQL and Python already in place, two to three months at 10 hours a week is enough to become productive in Spark and one cloud platform. Starting from zero, the IBM Data Engineering certificate estimates about 6 months.
What is the difference between big data and data science?
Big data is about storing and processing very large datasets. Data science is about drawing conclusions and building models from data, large or small. Data scientists often use big data tools such as Spark when their data no longer fits on one machine.
Do I need a powerful computer for a big data course?
No. Most courses use cloud labs or a local Spark install that runs on an ordinary laptop with small sample data. Databricks Free Edition and Google Cloud’s free tier handle larger exercises.
