What Is the AWS SAA Nanodegree?

This is Udacity’s preparation program for the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam (SAA-C03). Its four main courses are named after, and follow, the exam’s four domains: secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimized architectures. Each ends in a project you submit for review, and a fifth course covers exam tactics and combined practice exams.

The program sits alongside Udacity’s AWS Cloud Architect Nanodegree (nd063), which is shorter at 34 hours and aimed at organization-level architecture work rather than the exam. Take nd066 if passing SAA-C03 is the goal; nd063 assumes much more prior experience.

Only one prerequisite is listed: AWS Cloud Foundation, roughly what the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam covers. AWS describes the SAA-C03 target candidate as someone with at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions, so the program’s labs do real work for anyone who lacks that.

What a solutions architect does, and why this exam matters

A solutions architect turns business requirements into an AWS design: which services, how they connect, how the system stays secure and available, and what it costs to run. The SAA-C03 exam tests exactly that judgment through scenario questions, which is why it is such a common line in cloud engineer and architect job postings. No project: this course is the final review before you book the exam.

Two threads run through every course. The AWS Well-Architected Framework is used to justify each design decision, which matches the exam: AWS says SAA-C03 validates the ability to design solutions based on the framework. And cost appears well before the cost course, because most scenario questions ask for the cheapest design that still meets the requirement. Serverless, containers and database selection are taught where the exam tests them rather than as separate units.

What You Actually Build

The four reviewed projects, from the syllabus:

• Local Area Times: Securing the Cloud. Harden a newspaper’s AWS web app with IAM, VPC and VPN best practices while keeping it working and allowing secure remote admin access.
• Fresh (Word)-Pressed Architecture. Build a scalable WordPress blog that stays highly available and fast through holiday traffic spikes.
• Architectural project. Produce an architecture diagram and a working proof of concept for a food-distribution scenario.
• CloudArchs Multi-Scenario Cost Optimization. Cut costs across storage tiers, EC2, DynamoDB and NAT choices while enforcing budget controls.

These projects are the program’s main advantage over cheaper exam prep: having built a multi-AZ design or a cost-optimized architecture makes the exam’s scenario questions familiar, and gives you something concrete to walk through in an interview. For AWS-based programs Udacity supplies the AWS account: you open the AWS console from the lesson’s Cloud Resources tab (Udacity Support), and Udacity sets a fixed budget or credits for each student’s AWS Cloud Labs (AWS Cloud Resource Best Practices). The practical risk is running that budget down with a resource you forgot to delete, not a surprise bill on your own card.

Getting the most from the lab budget

• Tear down each project’s stack as soon as it passes review; keep the template or diagram, not the running resources.
• Stop EC2 instances and delete NAT gateways and load balancers between sessions; they bill by the hour.
• Keep S3 buckets private, which also avoids data transfer charges.
• Practice extra scenarios on your own AWS Free Tier account rather than in the lab, so the lab budget lasts.

How This Compares to Other AWS Prep Options

Most SAA-C03 candidates combine one main course with a set of practice exams in the final two weeks. Udacity fits as the main course for people who prefer projects to video. Prices for Tutorials Dojo (portal) and AWS Skill Builder (subscriptions) were read on 12 October 2026; neither pays us a commission.

The cheapest credible route, for comparison

A Udemy video course bought on sale, a Tutorials Dojo practice-exam set and an AWS Free Tier account for hands-on practice will get many disciplined learners through SAA-C03 for well under $50 plus the exam fee. What that route lacks is anyone checking your designs. If you have passed AWS exams before, or you already build on AWS at work, that route is usually enough.

At 60 hours, a learner doing 10 hours a week can finish in about six to eight weeks, so two months on the monthly plan ($498 at list price) is usually cheaper than the $846 bundle. The bundle pays off if you expect resubmissions to push you past three months, or plan a second program. The $999 one-time option only makes sense if you need much longer than four months.

The subscription is strongest for people planning more than one AWS credential. A common path is this program and the SAA-C03 exam, then AWS Machine Learning Engineer or AWS Cloud Architect, all on one subscription.

The Udacity certificate is separate from AWS’s. What the SAA-C03 exam itself involves

• Format: multiple choice (one right answer of four) and multiple response (two or more right answers of five or more). Unanswered questions count as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing.
• Scoring: a scaled score from 100 to 1,000 with a pass mark of 720. Scoring is compensatory, so you need to pass the exam as a whole, not each domain.
• Domains: secure architectures 30%, resilient architectures 26%, high-performing architectures 24%, cost-optimized architectures 20%.
• Where: a Pearson VUE test center or online proctored, in English and nine other languages. AWS has announced that the Italian version retires after December 31, 2026.
• Validity: AWS certifications last three years.

Associate or Professional?

The Solutions Architect Professional exam is the next step: 75 questions in 180 minutes for $300, aimed at people with two or more years of hands-on design work. It is being updated. Registration for the new version, SAP-C03, opens on October 27, 2026, and the last day to sit the current SAP-C02 is November 16, 2026. If you are starting from Cloud Practitioner level, take the Associate first; this program does not prepare you for the Professional exam.

• Four reviewed projects. You build architectures rather than only answering questions about them.
• Practice exams included. The 6-hour exam-prep course ends with combined practice exams.
• AWS labs supplied. Udacity provides the AWS account with a fixed lab budget.
• Low prerequisite bar. Cloud Practitioner-level knowledge is enough to start.
• Recently updated. Udacity updated the program on August 20, 2026.

Cons

• Udacity certificate is not AWS certification. You still pay $150 and pass SAA-C03 separately.
• Price. Even one month costs many times a Udemy course plus a practice-exam set.
• Too few reviews to judge. Udacity does not display a learner rating for this program yet.
• Practice exams are a small part. Six hours of exam prep; add a dedicated practice-exam set before booking.
• Fixed lab budget. Leave resources running and you can exhaust it.

Who Should Take This Nanodegree

Take it if:

• You are preparing for SAA-C03 and learn best by building, with someone checking your work.
• You have Cloud Practitioner-level knowledge and want to reach the Associate level.
• You can study 8 to 10 hours a week and finish within one or two months.
• You plan to take more than one Udacity AWS program on the same subscription.

Skip it if:

• You are completely new to AWS; start with Cloud Practitioner material.
• You only want the cheapest route to a pass; a Udemy course plus practice exams costs far less.
• You are aiming at the Professional level; that exam moves to SAP-C03 in late 2026 and needs more experience.
• You only want question banks.

Three typical learners

• The career switcher with a Cloud Practitioner pass and no AWS job yet: a good fit, because the projects stand in for the hands-on year AWS recommends.
• The working developer who already deploys to AWS: usually better served by a cheap video course and practice exams; the projects will feel familiar.
• The data or ML engineer who needs the architect view: take this, then the Data Engineering with AWS or ML Engineer program on the same subscription.

Where SAA sits in the AWS certification path

AWS sorts its certifications into Foundational (Cloud Practitioner, AI Practitioner), Associate (Solutions Architect, Developer, CloudOps Engineer, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer), Professional (including Solutions Architect Professional) and Specialty tiers, plus a new Business tier. Solutions Architect Associate is the usual first Associate exam because it is the broadest. Cloud Practitioner is optional: it helps if you have never used AWS, and this program’s one prerequisite covers roughly the same ground.

• New to AWS: Cloud Practitioner, then SAA.
• Some AWS work already: SAA directly, then a second Associate that matches your job (Developer, Data Engineer or CloudOps).
• Aiming at architect roles: SAA, then the AWS Cloud Architect Nanodegree or real project work, then Solutions Architect Professional (SAP-C03 registration opens 27 October 2026).

What learners report: reviews and Reddit (October 2026)

Udacity scores well overall: 4.5 on Trustpilot from 3,406 reviews and 4.7 on Course Report from 627. We read the 40 most recent Trustpilot reviews (20 September to 12 October 2026). Thirty-five gave four or five stars, mostly short notes posted after finishing a course, and several came from employer-sponsored training. The five low ratings are the useful part, because they describe what can go wrong:

• Slow or stuck project reviews: one learner had a review pending for three weeks and several support tickets open.
• Workspace problems: a browser terminal that would not install Python packages.
• Content quality on newer courses: one reviewer found mistakes that, in their view, no one had checked before release.

Udacity’s own project review timeline says reviews are often done in 48 to 72 hours but can take up to a week at busy times, and that canceling a submission to resubmit only pushes you back in the queue. Plan a week of slack per project, keep a local copy of everything you submit, and start the next lesson while you wait. These are small samples: they show what can happen, not how often it does.

On r/AWSCertifications, 2026 pass reports follow a common pattern: a video course (most often Stephane Maarek’s on Udemy), then Tutorials Dojo practice exams, over two to six months. Several posters treated a steady 70% or better on those practice exams as the sign they were ready, and some said the real exam felt easier than the practice sets. A September 2026 thread asked whether SAA is now so common that it has lost value. Replies there and elsewhere agree that it is the baseline AWS employers expect rather than a differentiator, which is why the reviewed projects in this program are worth more on a resume than the certificate alone.

Does this Nanodegree include the AWS SAA-C03 exam?

Developer Associate or Solutions Architect Associate: which first?

For most people, Solutions Architect Associate. It is broader, it is the more widely recognized of the two, and it makes the Developer Associate easier afterward. Take Developer first only if your day job is writing code that runs on Lambda, DynamoDB and API Gateway.

How long is the AWS certification valid?

Three years. To keep it, you pass the current version of the exam again or earn a higher-level certification in the same path, such as Solutions Architect Professional.
