AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02): Exam Guide, Cost and Best Prep for 2026

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the certification most people take first on AWS, and the one AWS itself recommends for people with no IT or cloud background. This guide covers what the CLF-C02 exam tests, how it is scored, how hard it really is, what it costs in total, the prep options worth paying for (and the free ones that are enough on their own), how to book and renew it, and what to take next. Who should take the Cloud Practitioner (and who should skip it)

AWS writes the exam for people who are new to cloud and may not have an IT background, naming sales, marketing, product and project management roles. Its target candidate has up to six months of exposure to AWS, and its exam guide says plainly that coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting, implementation and load testing are out of scope.

Take it if you are

• A career changer moving into a cloud-adjacent role (support, sales, customer success, project or product management).
• A student or new graduate who wants a recognized cloud credential on a resume before applying for entry-level tech jobs.
• An IT generalist who wants to learn the AWS vocabulary before choosing an Associate track.
• A manager or buyer who needs to talk credibly about AWS cost, security and service choices.

Skip it if you are

• Already working hands-on in AWS. Go straight to the Solutions Architect Associate; it is the same study effort aimed at a more valuable credential, and passing it renews a Cloud Practitioner anyway.

The four CLF-C02 exam domains and weights

AWS’s exam guide splits the 50 scored questions across four domains. The weights decide where your study hours should go: almost two-thirds of the exam is security plus services.

Domain 1: Cloud Concepts (24%)

• The value of the AWS Cloud: agility, elasticity, economies of scale, global reach, and trading fixed expense for variable expense.
• The AWS Well-Architected Framework and its six pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization and sustainability.
• Migration strategies and the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework at a high level.
• Cloud economics: what changes when you stop buying servers and start paying for usage.

Domain 2: Security and Compliance (30%)

• The shared responsibility model: what AWS secures (the cloud) and what you secure (in the cloud). Expect several questions on it.
• IAM: users, groups, roles, policies, multi-factor authentication, and why you lock away the root user.
• Encryption and protection services: AWS KMS, AWS Shield, AWS WAF, Amazon GuardDuty, Amazon Inspector, AWS Security Hub.
• Compliance resources such as AWS Artifact, and governance tools such as AWS CloudTrail, AWS Config and AWS Trusted Advisor.

Domain 3: Cloud Technology and Services (34%)

• Deployment and operations: the console, CLI, SDKs and infrastructure as code (CloudFormation), plus Regions, Availability Zones and edge locations.
• Compute: EC2 and its purchase options, Lambda, ECS, EKS, Fargate, Elastic Beanstalk, Lightsail.
• Storage: S3 and its storage classes, EBS, EFS, FSx, AWS Backup, the Snow family.
• Databases: RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, Redshift; networking: VPC, security groups, network ACLs, Route 53, CloudFront, Direct Connect.
• Analytics, integration and AI/ML at name-recognition level: Athena, Glue, Kinesis, QuickSight, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, SageMaker AI, Bedrock, Rekognition, Comprehend.

You do not need to configure any of these. You need to know what each one is for and pick the right one for a scenario.

Domain 4: Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%)

• Pricing models: On-Demand, Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Spot Instances, Dedicated Hosts.
• Cost tools: AWS Pricing Calculator, Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, Cost and Usage Reports, cost allocation tags, consolidated billing in AWS Organizations.
• Support plans and what each includes, plus resources such as AWS re:Post, the Knowledge Center and AWS Marketplace.

Which AWS services to study first

The exam guide’s in-scope list runs to well over a hundred services, but they are not equal. Spend your time in this order, which follows the domain weights and the services that appear across several domains:

A practical test: if you can explain to a non-technical colleague when you would pick S3 over EBS, Lambda over EC2, or DynamoDB over RDS, and which AWS tool tells you who deleted a resource, you are ready for most of Domain 3.

How CLF-C02 is scored

Your result is a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and 700 passes. AWS sets the bar with a panel of experts and then equates different versions of the exam, so a 700 means the same thing whichever set of questions you got. The scoring is compensatory: you need to pass the exam overall, not each domain.

• Unanswered questions count as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a blank.
• Fifteen of the 65 questions are unscored trial questions. You cannot spot them, so treat every question as if it counts.
• Your score report shows your performance by domain. If you fail, it is the best guide to what to study before the retake.

How hard is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam?

It is the easiest AWS certification, but it is not a formality. AWS publishes no pass rate, so ignore any website that quotes one. What makes it harder than it looks is breadth: dozens of services with similar names and the need to pick the best one for a short scenario. Questions are rarely about definitions alone. A typical item describes a company’s situation and asks which service, pricing model or support plan fits.

Where candidates most often lose points

• Shared responsibility edge cases. Patching the guest operating system on EC2 is yours; patching the host is AWS’s.
• Support plans. Which plan includes a technical account manager, which offers 24/7 phone support, and the response-time tiers.
• Look-alike services. CloudTrail (who did what) versus CloudWatch (how is it performing) versus Config (what changed in configuration).
• Pricing models. When Spot, Savings Plans or Reserved Instances make sense, and what “upfront” changes.
• Global infrastructure. The difference between a Region, an Availability Zone and an edge location.

People with no IT background usually need four to six weeks of part-time study. Developers and IT staff often need two to three. If you use AWS at work every day, you could pass with a week of review, which is exactly why you should consider the Associate exam instead.

What the AWS Cloud Practitioner costs in total

Udemy prices change daily and most courses sell for well under list during frequent sales, so check the price on the day. Two ways to spend less: once you pass any AWS certification, AWS puts a 50% discount voucher for your next exam in your certification account, and AWS refunds the fee if you cancel more than 24 hours before your appointment.

Best ways to prepare for CLF-C02

Ranked on how well each resource maps to the current exam guide, how current it is, and value for money. You need one main course plus one set of practice exams; buying three courses does not help.

1. AWS Skill Builder: the free official route

AWS’s own Cloud Practitioner Essentials course is free with an AWS Skill Builder account. AWS’s four-step prep plan for the exam adds the free Official Practice Question Set and the Official Pretest, which show you the question style and your weak domains. Do these before you pay for anything. For some people they are enough.

2. Stephane Maarek’s Udemy course: the best paid course for most people

Ultimate AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner CLF-C02 by Stephane Maarek is rated 4.7 from 296,401 ratings, has 1,384,724 students, and was last updated in October 2026 when we checked. It covers all four domains with hands-on demos, includes a full practice exam with explanations, and ranks on page one of Bing for the exam name.

3. Tutorials Dojo practice exams: the readiness check

Jon Bonso’s Tutorials Dojo CLF-C02 practice exams cost $14.99 and are rated 5.0 from 231 reviews on the Tutorials Dojo portal. They come in timed, review and section-based modes, with an explanation for every answer. A common rule of thumb is to book the real exam once you score consistently above 80% on fresh sets. We have no affiliate relationship with Tutorials Dojo; we list it because it is the practice-test set most candidates use.

4. Coursera: the same AWS course, with a certificate

AWS publishes AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials on Coursera too: 13 modules, rated 4.8 from 2,096 reviews, with 193,306 people enrolled. The content matches the Skill Builder version. It makes sense if you already pay for Coursera Plus and want the shareable course certificate, or prefer Coursera’s deadlines and quizzes.

5. Pluralsight Cloud+ (A Cloud Guru): for labs

Pluralsight folded A Cloud Guru into its Cloud+ plan, which costs $35 a month, or $24.50 a month billed yearly, and includes its Core Tech library. Its CLF-C02 path is a reasonable alternative to Maarek if you prefer a different teacher or want guided labs; a single month is usually enough for this exam.

After you pass: build skills employers can see

The Cloud Practitioner proves vocabulary, not ability. If you want a technical cloud job, follow it with hands-on projects. Udacity’s Nanodegree programs are project-based and reviewed by mentors: the AWS Cloud Architect Nanodegree (intermediate, about 34 hours, 4.6 from 211 reviews), the Cloud Developer Nanodegree (about 60 hours, 4.4 from 480) and Data Engineering with AWS (about 66 hours, 4.6 from 1,294). Udacity charges $249 a month, $846 for four months prepaid, or $999 to buy a single program. They are not exam prep for CLF-C02; take them after you pass, if you want a portfolio. CLF-C02 study plan by starting point

No IT background: five to six weeks, about five hours a week

1. Week 1: Read the exam guide. Complete the first half of Cloud Practitioner Essentials. Open an AWS Free Tier account and set a budget alert.
2. Week 2: Finish Cloud Practitioner Essentials, then take the free Official Practice Question Set to see the style.
3. Weeks 3 and 4: Work through the Maarek course, doing the demos yourself: launch an EC2 instance, create an S3 bucket, set up an IAM user with MFA.
4. Week 5: Take your first Tutorials Dojo exam. Review every wrong answer and reread the matching section.
5. Week 6: Two more practice exams and the Official Pretest. Book the exam when you score above 80% on fresh sets.

IT or developer background: two to three weeks

1. Days 1 to 3: Read the exam guide and skim the service list for anything unfamiliar.
2. Days 4 to 10: Watch the Maarek course at 1.5x speed, slowing down for billing, support plans and security services.
3. Days 11 to 18: Practice exams until your scores are steady, then book.

How to register and take the exam

1. Create or sign in to your AWS Certification Account at aws.training (it is separate from an AWS cloud account).
2. Choose the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam and a delivery method: a Pearson VUE test center or online proctoring from home.
3. For online delivery, run Pearson VUE’s system test in advance and plan a quiet room with a clear desk and government ID.
4. Non-native English speakers can request the ESL +30 accommodation once in the account before booking, for 30 extra minutes.
5. You can reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment, twice per booking. Cancel more than 24 hours ahead for a refund; inside 24 hours you forfeit the fee.
6. Your result appears in the Exam History tab within five business days, with your digital badge and the 50% voucher for your next exam.

Exam-day mistakes to avoid

• Rushing the multiple-response questions. They tell you how many answers to pick; read that line twice.
• Picking the answer that works rather than the best one. Several options are often technically possible. Look for the qualifier: “most cost-effective”, “least operational overhead”, “highly available”.
• Leaving questions blank. Blanks score zero and guesses cost nothing. Flag hard questions, answer them anyway, and come back.
• Online proctoring surprises. A second monitor, notes on the wall or someone walking in can end an online exam. Clear the room and close every other application.
• Time. Ninety minutes for 65 questions is about 80 seconds each, which is enough for most people; if you finish early, use the spare minutes to review flagged items.

How to renew the Cloud Practitioner

The certification is valid for three years. AWS lists four ways to renew it, each adding three years from the day you complete it (source: AWS Recertification):

• AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, a free game-based course with no exam, available once your certification is within six months of expiring.
• Pass the latest version of the Cloud Practitioner exam (you can use the 50% voucher).
• Pass any Associate-level exam.
• Pass any Professional-level exam.

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it for your career?

As a door-opener, yes; as a salary lever on its own, no. It tells a recruiter you understand cloud vocabulary and took the initiative to prove it, which matters most for career changers and for non-technical roles at cloud companies. Technical hiring managers look for Associate certifications and hands-on projects.

No reliable source measures the pay effect of this one certificate, so we do not quote one. For context on the jobs it leads toward, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2025 median of $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators and $134,050 for computer network architects, the occupations where many cloud engineering and architect roles are counted. Those are the destinations; the Cloud Practitioner is the first step toward them. AWS reports more than 1.42 million active AWS certifications held by 1.05 million people (January 2025), across all its exams.

What to take after the Cloud Practitioner

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam?

It is the most accessible AWS certification. AWS designs it for people with up to six months of exposure to AWS, including people without an IT background, and it does not test coding, architecture design or troubleshooting. What trips people up is breadth: many similar-sounding services, the shared responsibility model and the support plans. AWS does not publish a pass rate.

How much does the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost?

The exam fee is $100 in the US (85 euros, or 8,553 rupees on Pearson’s voucher store). Prep can cost nothing if you use AWS Skill Builder’s free course and practice question set; most people add a $15 to $20 practice-test set and sometimes a video course.

How many questions are on CLF-C02 and how long is it?

65 questions in 90 minutes. 50 are scored and 15 are unscored questions AWS is testing for future use; you cannot tell which are which. Each question is multiple choice (one right answer of four) or multiple response (two or more right answers of five or more).

What score do you need to pass CLF-C02?

700 on a scaled score of 100 to 1,000. The scoring is compensatory, so you need to pass the exam as a whole, not each domain. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.

Can I take the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam online from home?

Yes. AWS offers every certification exam at a Pearson VUE test center or as an online proctored exam. You book through your AWS Certification Account, which hands you off to Pearson VUE.

What happens if I fail CLF-C02?

You wait 14 calendar days and can then retake it. AWS sets no limit on attempts, but you pay the full fee each time. Your score report shows how you did in each domain, which tells you where to focus.

Does the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner expire?

Yes, after three years. You can renew it for free with the AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner game once you are within six months of expiry, or by passing the latest CLF exam, any Associate exam or any Professional exam.

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification worth it?

It is worth it if you are new to cloud, switching careers, or work in a non-technical role at a company that uses AWS. If you already work hands-on with AWS, skip it and take the Solutions Architect Associate, which carries more weight with technical hiring managers.

Should I take Cloud Practitioner or AI Practitioner first?

Take Cloud Practitioner first if cloud itself is new to you; it covers the services, pricing and security model that AI Practitioner assumes. If you already understand AWS basics and your goal is AI or machine learning work, go straight to AI Practitioner. Both are foundational exams at $100.

Is AWS Cloud Practitioner or Azure AZ-900 better?

Pick the one that matches the cloud your target employers use. They test the same level of knowledge. AZ-900 costs $99 and does not expire; CLF-C02 costs $100 and lasts three years. AWS holds the larger share of the cloud market, so CLF is the safer default if you have no preference.

Can I pass CLF-C02 without hands-on AWS experience?

Yes. AWS says hands-on experience is helpful but not required, and many people pass from study alone. A few hours in the console on the Free Tier, launching an EC2 instance and creating an S3 bucket, makes the service questions far easier.

Is there a free way to get the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification?

The prep can be free: AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials and the Official Practice Question Set on AWS Skill Builder cost nothing. The $100 exam fee still applies unless you have a voucher, for example the 50% voucher AWS gives you after your first certification, or one from an employer or an AWS training event.
