Zenva Academy Review 2026: Is It Worth It for Game Development?

Last updated: October 2026. Written by Josh Hutcheson. We read Zenva’s site, about 40 recent Trustpilot reviews and five Reddit threads for this review on 14 October 2026. See our review methodology. If you enroll through our links we may earn a commission, which never changes the ranking.

Zenva Academy is a good choice for learning game development in Godot, Unity or Unreal at your own pace, with written notes and project files behind every video. It is a weaker choice for web development or for anyone who needs a recognized credential, and it does not show its subscription price until you sign up.

Our verdict

  • Best for: hobbyists and beginners learning Godot, Unity or Unreal who like to read and code along, not just watch.
  • Not for: web developers, or career changers who need a credential employers recognize.
  • Reputation: 4.7 on Trustpilot from 533 reviews (14 October 2026), with 2% one-star.
  • Watch out for: pricing you only see at sign-up, older videos that move fast, and an AI Tutor that reviewers say is no longer free.

Zenva is an online school for game development, coding and, more recently, AI app building. Its homepage on 14 October 2026 claimed more than 1,000,000 learners, 400+ courses and learning paths, and more than 14 years of teaching game development. Its Trustpilot business profile is verified and registered in Australia. Alongside the Academy, Zenva runs Zenva Schools for classroom teaching, a program for governments, and the free GameDev Academy tutorial blog.

The core product is one subscription that includes every course and learning path. Zenva positions it against free alternatives by bundling things YouTube videos and documentation do not: structured paths, illustrated notes and code for every lesson, downloadable project files, an AI Tutor and certificates.

What you get with a Zenva subscription

  • Learning paths. Ordered sequences of courses that take you from the basics to a finished project, rather than a loose catalog.
  • Video lessons with written notes. Every video has a written version with screenshots and source code, which Zenva’s founder described on Reddit as its main difference from video-only platforms. Several Trustpilot reviewers said the notes are the reason they prefer it.
  • Project files. You download the assets and finished code for each project.
  • AI Tutor. An assistant that answers questions about the lesson you are on. One 2026 reviewer called it invaluable; another said it had stopped being free and that general-purpose AI tools now do the same job.
  • Certificates of completion for finished courses.

Courses and learning paths

Zenva’s homepage now leads with two paths. The Godot path goes from the essentials (scenes, nodes and GDScript) to a guided playable game and then a project of your own. The AI coding path starts with installing and configuring tools, teaches a prompt, review and debug workflow using Git, and ends with a working app. Unity and Unreal Engine courses sit alongside them, as do programming courses in Python and other languages.

Godot is the strongest area. One Trustpilot reviewer counted about 80 Godot modules in September 2026 and described the library as “regularly growing”, while another, a hobbyist Godot developer of a year, said a few Zenva lessons taught more than a year of YouTube tutorials. The same detailed reviewer listed the gaps: little on Scratch and Roblox, few lessons on shaders and visual effects, little on art tools such as Blender or Aseprite, nothing on game design documents, and some C# Godot modules with no GDScript version.

Older catalog descriptions, including earlier versions of this review, described “Mini-Degrees” in Python, web development and VR. Zenva now presents its catalog as learning paths with game development and AI at the front. For web development specifically, Reddit users who like Zenva for games still recommend other platforms; see our front-end development courses guide.

How much does Zenva cost?

Zenva does not publish subscription prices on its public pages. On 14 October 2026 its homepage said only that one subscription includes every course and learning path, and its subscription and plan pages sat behind a security check that blocked our attempts to read them; the archived copy of its old pricing page is gated the same way. We will not quote a price we could not see.

What recent reviewers report gives a picture of how Zenva sells:

  • A yearly subscription, which an April 2026 reviewer called good value.
  • A lifetime subscription, which a January 2026 reviewer bought.
  • Individual courses: a January 2026 reviewer objected to paying about 50 dollars for each Godot course.
  • Bundles of Zenva courses on Humble Bundle, which two reviewers used as their starting point.
  • No regional pricing: a September 2026 reviewer said the price is too high outside richer countries, and Zenva replied that it had passed the idea to management.

Zenva’s founder has pointed Reddit users to free introductory courses and a 7-day free trial as the way to test the teaching style before paying. Check what is on offer at sign-up, and read the renewal terms before you subscribe.

What learners say: Trustpilot and Reddit

On 14 October 2026 Zenva had a TrustScore of 4.7 from 533 reviews on Trustpilot: 77% five-star, 16% four-star, 4% three-star, 1% two-star and 2% one-star. Trustpilot notes that Zenva has not invited customers to review recently, so the 41 reviews from the past 12 months were unprompted. Zenva had replied to every negative review.

What reviewers praise

  • Well-organized courses with clear narration and a comfortable pace (the most common comment).
  • Course notes, PDFs and source code alongside the videos, for people who prefer to read and code.
  • The Godot series, including an inventory-system course a February 2026 reviewer called excellent.
  • Courses updated for new engine versions of Unity and Godot.
  • The AI Tutor, for learners who get stuck on a setting or a step.

What reviewers criticize

  • Price, especially outside the US, and individual course prices.
  • Older videos that move too fast for beginners, compared with newer videos by the same instructors.
  • Inconsistent folder structures between courses, which makes combining pieces from different projects hard.
  • The AI Tutor moving from free to paid.
  • One July 2026 reviewer said a cancellation did not go through; Zenva refunded the latest charge and said its testing found cancellations working.

Reddit

Reddit threads about Zenva are older and more mixed. In a 2020 r/learnprogramming thread, users who studied VR and Unity with Zenva said the content moves fast but is among the best they had found for that niche, and that they would not use Zenva for web development. A 2021 r/gamedev thread was harsher, calling the courses low quality and the constant sales a pressure tactic, and recommended GameDev.tv and Unity Learn instead. In a 2024 r/gamedev thread, users found errors in AI-written Godot articles on Zenva’s blog; Zenva’s founder replied that the articles had been an experiment, apologized, and said they had been removed or fixed.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
Strong, growing Godot library with a clear path from basics to a full game Subscription price not shown until sign-up
Written notes, code and project files with every lesson Older courses can move fast for beginners
Covers Godot, Unity and Unreal in one subscription Weak for web development and non-game topics
4.7 on Trustpilot from 533 reviews, with fast replies to complaints AI Tutor now a paid feature, according to reviewers
Free tutorials on the GameDev Academy blog Certificates are not accredited; no job outcome data

Godot, Unity or Unreal: which Zenva path should you start with?

One subscription covers all three engines, so the real decision is which one to learn first. The choice depends on the game you want to make more than on Zenva.

Engine Language Best for Why start here
Godot GDScript (Python-like) or C# 2D games, small 3D games, learning game structure Free and open source, lightweight, and the area where Zenva is adding the most content
Unity C# Mobile games, 2D and 3D indie games, VR Large job market and asset store; Zenva has a long Unity catalog
Unreal Engine Blueprints (visual) and C++ High-end 3D games Industry standard for large 3D productions; heavier to run and learn

If you have never made a game, Godot is the gentlest start: the editor is small, GDScript reads like Python, and the engine costs nothing. Move to Unity or Unreal when a specific project or job needs them. If you are aiming at iPhone-only 2D games and already know Swift, Apple’s own framework is another route; see our SpriteKit tutorials guide.

How to test Zenva before you pay

  • Read a free tutorial first. The GameDev Academy blog is written by Zenva and shows its teaching style at no cost. Pick a recent post for the engine you want.
  • Take a free introductory course or trial if one is offered. Zenva’s founder has pointed Reddit users to both; check what is available when you create an account.
  • Pick one learning path and finish it. Reviewers who got the most from Zenva followed one path to a finished game rather than sampling many courses.
  • Check the course date. Recent reviewers found newer courses slower and more detailed than older ones by the same instructor, which matters if you are a beginner.
  • Note the renewal date. Subscriptions renew automatically, so put the date in your calendar and cancel in time if you are not using it.

Can you get a job with Zenva Academy?

Zenva publishes no graduate salary or placement data, so we will not put a number on what its learners earn, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. What a subscription realistically buys is skills and portfolio projects. In game development, studios and publishers look at what you have built: a playable game, a polished prototype or contributions to a shipped title. Zenva’s project-based paths can get you to that portfolio; they will not stand in for it.

If you want a credential for a broader software career, a structured program such as a Coursera professional certificate or a coding bootcamp is a better fit. See our coding bootcamps guide.

Zenva vs the alternatives

Option Model Best for Notes
Zenva Academy Subscription Several courses across Godot, Unity and Unreal Notes, project files and an AI Tutor
GameDev.tv Individual courses (own site or Udemy) One deep course on a single engine Recommended in r/gamedev threads; 4.0 from 50 reviews on Trustpilot (14 October 2026)
Udemy Individual courses Buying one specific course on sale Quality varies by instructor; see our Udemy review
Unity Learn Free Unity beginners Unity’s own tutorials and pathways
Godot documentation and GDQuest Free docs; paid GDQuest courses Godot learners The engine’s official docs are the reference every course builds on
YouTube Free Quick answers to specific problems No structure, notes or project files

We have no affiliate relationship with GameDev.tv, Unity Learn or GDQuest, and they appear here on merit. For ranked course lists by engine, see our guides to Godot courses, Unity courses and Unreal Engine courses.

Who should use Zenva?

  • Use Zenva if you want to learn Godot, Unity or Unreal at your own pace, plan to take several courses, and learn better with written notes and code alongside video.
  • Use Zenva if you are a hobbyist or early intermediate developer who wants structured projects rather than scattered YouTube tutorials.
  • Skip Zenva if you want web development, data science or a career credential; other platforms do those better.
  • Skip Zenva if you only need one course; buying a single course on Udemy or GameDev.tv will cost less.
  • Skip Zenva if price transparency matters to you before you create an account.

Is Zenva Academy worth it?

For game development, yes, with conditions. Zenva’s Godot path is one of the more complete structured options available, its written notes and project files are a real advantage over video-only courses, and its 4.7 Trustpilot rating has held up across hundreds of reviews. The conditions are that you will use several courses, that you check the price and renewal terms at sign-up, and that you treat its certificates as a learning record rather than a job credential.

Start with a free tutorial on the GameDev Academy blog or a free introductory course to test the teaching style, then subscribe if it suits you.

What changed since our last version of this review

We rewrote this review from scratch in October 2026. We removed the old list of LinkedIn and Facebook testimonials and their rating counts, because we could no longer verify them, and we removed biographical claims about Zenva’s founder that we could not source. We also dropped descriptions of a mobile app and of “Mini-Degree” programs that no longer match how Zenva presents its catalog. Every figure on this page now comes from Zenva’s own site, Trustpilot or the Reddit threads cited above, read on 14 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zenva Academy legit?

Yes. Zenva is an established Australian company that has taught game development for more than 14 years, and its Trustpilot business profile is verified and registered in Australia. On 14 October 2026 it had a 4.7 TrustScore from 533 reviews, with 77% five-star and 2% one-star ratings, and its founder answers questions on Reddit.

Is Zenva worth it?

Zenva is worth it if you want structured game development courses in Godot, Unity or Unreal with written notes, source code and project files alongside the videos. It is less useful for web development or for a career change that needs a recognized credential. Recent Trustpilot reviewers praise the Godot courses and course notes; the most common complaints are price outside the US and older videos moving too fast for beginners.

How much does Zenva cost?

Zenva does not show subscription prices to logged-out visitors, and its plan pages were behind a security check when we tried to read them on 14 October 2026. Reviewers in 2026 mention a yearly subscription, a lifetime subscription and individual Godot courses at about 50 dollars each, and Zenva courses also appear in Humble Bundle deals. Check the current price at sign-up before you commit.

Does Zenva have free courses?

Zenva has offered free introductory courses, and its founder has pointed Reddit users to them and to a 7-day free trial of the subscription as a way to test the teaching style. Its GameDev Academy blog also publishes free tutorials. Confirm what is currently free when you sign up, because we could not load Zenva’s free-course page on 14 October 2026.

Is Zenva good for learning Godot?

Godot is where Zenva is strongest right now. Its homepage leads with a Godot learning path that goes from the editor basics to a playable game and then your own project, and several 2026 Trustpilot reviewers singled out the Godot series. One reviewer counted about 80 Godot modules in September 2026 and noted that some C# Godot modules have no GDScript equivalent.

Are Zenva certificates recognized by employers?

Zenva includes certificates of completion with its courses, but they are not accredited qualifications, and Zenva publishes no job placement data. Treat them as a record of what you studied. A portfolio of finished games or apps carries far more weight with employers and publishers.

Zenva vs Udemy: which is better for game development?

Zenva sells a subscription to a structured game development library with notes, project files and an AI tutor. Udemy sells individual courses, including GameDev.tv’s well-reviewed Unity and Godot courses, which you buy once and keep. Choose Zenva if you will take several courses across engines; choose Udemy if you want one specific course.

Can I cancel a Zenva subscription?

Yes. In July 2026 a Trustpilot reviewer said a cancellation had not gone through; Zenva replied that it had refunded the latest charge and that its testing showed cancellations process correctly. Keep the confirmation email when you cancel, and contact Zenva support if a charge appears afterward.

Is Zenva good for complete beginners?

Mostly yes. Recent Trustpilot reviewers with no experience describe courses that explain how to navigate the engine before building anything, and a beginner-to-mini-degree progression they could follow at their own pace. The caveat is that some older videos move quickly, and Reddit users in 2020 noted that some advanced VR and Unity courses assume you already know Unity and C#.
