Pimsleur vs Duolingo (2026): Which Language App Is Better?

Last updated: October 2026. Written by Josh Hutcheson, OnlineCourseing editor. Prices, trials and refund rules for both apps were re-checked on Pimsleur’s and Duolingo’s own pages and the US app stores on 24 October 2026. See our review methodology. The short answer

Pimsleur is better for learning to speak and understand a language; Duolingo is better for building a daily habit, vocabulary and reading, and its core course is free. If you can only have one and your goal is a real conversation, choose Pimsleur. If you are not sure you will stick with a language, start with free Duolingo and add Pimsleur once the habit holds.

  • Pimsleur: 30-minute audio lessons that make you answer out loud; five levels of 30 lessons in most popular languages; $19.95 a month for one language or $164.95 a year for all 50+ (read 24 Oct 2026); 7-day free trial
  • Duolingo: short game-style lessons on a phone; free with ads, or Super for no ads and unlimited mistakes; Super was listed at $83.99 among the US App Store’s Super items on 24 Oct 2026
  • Best together: Pimsleur for listening and speaking, Duolingo for reading, spelling and a streak
  • Watch out for: Pimsleur does not refund subscriptions, so cancel before day 7 if it is not for you

Pimsleur and Duolingo are the two language apps people compare most, and they barely overlap. One is an audio course built around speaking from the first lesson; the other is a game you can play for free in five minutes a day. This comparison covers how each one teaches, what you can do after finishing, what they really cost in 2026, their trial and refund rules, and how to use them together.

How each one teaches

Pimsleur: listen, recall, answer out loud

Every Pimsleur lesson opens with a short conversation between native speakers. A narrator then breaks it down, asks you how to say a phrase in the target language, and leaves a pause for you to answer out loud before a native speaker gives the right version. Words come back at growing intervals, a technique Dr. Paul Pimsleur called graduated interval recall, so you recall them just before you would forget. A lesson is about 30 minutes, and Pimsleur recommends one a day.

There are no grammar tables. You absorb patterns by using them, the way you learned your first language. Pimsleur’s FAQ says each 30-lesson level teaches 300 to 500 new vocabulary items and that the goal is to manipulate the language and build your own sentences, not to collect lists of words. The app adds flash cards, quizzes, Speak Easy conversations, Voice Coach and around 100 short reading lessons in the big languages.

Duolingo: short games and a streak

Duolingo teaches through short exercises: matching words, translating sentences, tapping word tiles, listening and typing, and a few speaking prompts. Lessons take a few minutes, a path of sections and units moves you forward, and streaks, leagues and XP keep you coming back. Mistakes cost you hearts or energy on the free plan; Super removes that limit and the ads.

The design is excellent for consistency. Its weakness is the reverse of Pimsleur’s: you recognize far more than you can say, because most answers are tapped or typed rather than produced out loud under time pressure.

What a lesson looks like in each app

A Pimsleur lesson, minute by minute

  • The first minute: you hear a short conversation at natural speed, usually two people meeting, asking for directions or ordering something. Most of it will not make sense yet.
  • The next 25 minutes: the narrator rebuilds that conversation piece by piece. You repeat a word, then a phrase, then answer prompts such as “how would you ask her if she understands English?”. Each prompt leaves a pause for your answer before a native speaker confirms it. Earlier material keeps coming back at longer and longer intervals.
  • The last few minutes: the opening conversation plays again, and now you follow most of it. That moment is the hook that keeps Pimsleur learners going.
  • After the lesson (Premium): optional flash cards, a quick-match game, Speak Easy role-play and Voice Coach practice on the same material, plus a short reading lesson in many languages.

A common rule of thumb among learners is to move on once you answer most prompts correctly. Learners who finished the French course on Reddit say the later levels pack in more new material, and that they often replayed a lesson rather than forcing the next one.

A Duolingo session, minute by minute

  • Open the app: a reminder and your streak count meet you, and the path shows the next lesson.
  • Three to five minutes: a short set of quick exercises, such as matching pairs, building a sentence from word tiles, typing what you hear and occasionally saying a sentence into the microphone.
  • Rewards: XP, a league table and streak protection pull you into “one more lesson”. Free users lose hearts or energy on mistakes; Super users do not.
  • Extras: practice sessions that recycle your mistakes, stories in the larger courses, and on Max, an AI video call.

The difference in effort is the whole comparison. A Pimsleur lesson is 30 minutes of active recall that leaves you tired; a Duolingo lesson is three minutes you can do in a queue. Both are valid, but they build different skills.

How natural does each one sound?

Pimsleur records native speakers for its dialogues and is strong on accent: learners on Reddit and Trustpilot repeatedly say native speakers understood them, and several Japanese and Mandarin learners singled out pitch and tones. The trade-off is register. Pimsleur leans formal and polite, and some phrases sound dated; a Russian speaker on Reddit pointed out forms of address that Russians rarely use, and an Italian learner was told some phrases were stiff. That is a safe default for travel, but expect to learn casual speech elsewhere.

Duolingo now uses a lot of synthetic speech. In October 2026 a busy r/duolingo thread from a learner quitting after ten years complained that AI voices made pronunciation hard to trust, and many long-time users agreed. If you are learning mainly by ear, that is a point for Pimsleur.

How long until you can hold a simple conversation?

At one Pimsleur lesson a day, a level takes about a month and all five levels take about five months. Learners commonly report holding simple conversations on familiar topics, such as travel, food, family and work, around the end of Level 2 or 3, provided they answered out loud rather than just listening. Pimsleur’s own Japanese page goes further, promising practical conversations by the end of Level 1.

Duolingo does not map neatly to time, because sessions are short and the path is long. Its own research ties five sections of the French or Spanish course to five university semesters of reading and listening. Speaking comes later, which is why so many Duolingo users add a tutor or Pimsleur once they want to talk.

Which one fits your goal?

Your goal Better pick Why
A trip in the next 3 months Pimsleur Two or three levels of survival conversation and good pronunciation
Learning a language just to see if you like it Duolingo Free, low effort, easy to stop
Talking with a partner’s family Pimsleur, then a tutor Speaking confidence first, then real conversation practice
A school or university course Duolingo plus your textbook Reading, spelling and vocabulary match how classes are graded
A language with a new script Pimsleur plus a reading tool Audio for speaking; neither app is enough for the script
Studying several languages Pimsleur All Access or Duolingo All Access covers 50+ languages for one price; Duolingo is free

Families and sharing an account

Both companies let a household share. Pimsleur’s FAQ says a registered user can share a Premium or All Access course with up to three household members, each with their own progress, and its lifetime plans include the same three extra users. Duolingo’s Super Family plan covers up to six accounts. For a family where several people want to learn the same language, Pimsleur’s sharing makes the higher price easier to justify; for a big household that mainly wants a habit, Super Family is the cheaper route.

What you can actually do after each one

Neither app makes you fluent on its own, and both companies are careful about what they claim. Duolingo’s efficacy page says its research found learners can cover “5 university semesters’ worth of French or Spanish in 5 sections of Duolingo”, measured on reading and listening tests. Pimsleur describes its full course as taking you from first words to confident everyday conversation.

Learners who finished Pimsleur describe the result more modestly. In Reddit threads from people who completed all five French or Italian levels, the common estimate is around A2 on the European CEFR scale for listening and speaking, with reading and writing lower if Pimsleur was the only resource. Five levels of 30 half-hour lessons is about 75 hours of audio. For scale, the U.S. Foreign Service Institute plans 24 to 30 weeks of full-time study for French, Spanish or Italian, and 88 weeks for Japanese.

What Pimsleur graduates consistently report is confidence: they can open their mouth, be understood, and keep a simple conversation going, which classroom learners with bigger vocabularies often cannot. What Duolingo users report is breadth: more words, better spelling and the ability to read signs and menus, with less ease in a live conversation.

The one-time prices in brackets were a limited-time sale that day; the list prices are what you pay outside a sale. For every plan and how to pay less, see our Pimsleur cost breakdown.

What Duolingo costs

Duolingo does not publish a price on its website. Its Super page offers a one-week free trial and shows the plan features, and the app shows the price at checkout, where it varies by country, platform and promotion. On Apple’s US App Store on 24 October 2026 the in-app items named “Super Duolingo” were $9.99, $12.99, $83.99, $95.99 and $119.99, and the app offered a 14-day Super trial. Our Super Duolingo cost guide found $83.99 a year attached to the annual plan on Google Play, which works out to about $7 a month.

Super Family covers up to six accounts on one subscription. Duolingo Max, the tier above Super, adds AI Video Call and Roleplay practice in selected languages such as Spanish, French and German. The core Duolingo course stays free with ads, which is the real price comparison: Pimsleur’s cheapest subscription costs about as much each month as a year of nothing.

Which is better value?

Duolingo is cheaper by any measure. Pimsleur earns its price only if you will actually do the lessons out loud. A learner who finishes one level a month pays $19.95 per level on Premium, and the whole five-level course takes about five months at a lesson a day. If you plan to study more than one language, All Access at $164.95 a year beats two Premium subscriptions. If you want to keep one language forever, the one-time Levels 1-5 purchase is the only option with a money-back guarantee.

Free trials, cancellation and refunds

Every subscription starts with a 7-day free trial, and Pimsleur asks for a card up front. Three rules in Pimsleur’s FAQ matter more than the price:

  • Subscriptions are not refunded. Cancel before the trial ends or before the next billing date; Pimsleur does not refund any unused part of a term. If you cancel during the trial, access stops immediately.
  • One-time purchases have a 30-day money-back guarantee. That covers buying a single level, the full course or a lifetime plan, not the monthly or annual subscriptions.
  • You can pause instead of canceling. Subscriptions started after 20 June 2024 can be paused for one or two months.

Duolingo’s free plan never expires, and its Super trial is a week on the web and 14 days in the app stores on 24 October 2026. If you subscribe through Apple or Google Play, refunds and cancellations go through that store, not Duolingo. In both cases, cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, because app-store subscriptions can renew inside that window.

Speaking practice: Voice Coach vs Duolingo Max

Speaking is where the two apps differ most, so it is worth looking at the AI tools each one now adds.

  • Pimsleur Voice Coach lets you practice sentences from your lessons and gives AI feedback on your pronunciation in most languages. Completing its Challenge mode earns a “Pimsleur Certified” badge for each level, per Pimsleur’s FAQ. The core lesson itself is the bigger speaking tool: every lesson makes you answer out loud dozens of times.
  • Duolingo Max adds Video Call and Roleplay, where you hold a conversation with an AI character in the app and get feedback afterwards. It is genuinely useful practice, but it is an add-on to a game-based course rather than the center of it.

If your problem is freezing when someone speaks to you, Pimsleur’s daily drill is the stronger cure. If you already speak a little and want low-pressure conversation, Max or a human tutor will stretch you further than Pimsleur’s scripted dialogues.

Grammar, reading and writing

Pimsleur explains very little grammar. It gives you enough examples of a structure that you start using it correctly, and some learners find that frustrating because a rule they never saw stated takes a while to click. Its reading lessons teach you to sound out the script, including hiragana and katakana in Japanese, but they are a supplement. You will not learn to write with Pimsleur.

Duolingo covers reading and writing much more, with typed answers, spelling and short stories in the larger courses, plus brief grammar tips. It is weaker at explaining why a sentence works, and many learners pair it with a grammar book or a structured app such as Babbel.

Motivation and building the habit

Duolingo is the better habit machine. Streaks, reminders, leagues and five-minute lessons make it easy to study every day, which is why so many people keep a long streak. The risk is optimizing for the streak rather than the language.

Pimsleur asks for more: 30 focused minutes, ideally every day, because each lesson builds on the last. Pimsleur recommends one lesson a day, and learners who finished the course say skipping days often meant repeating a lesson. Its advantage is that the lesson fits time you already have, such as a commute, a walk or cooking, so it does not compete with screen time.

Which is better for Spanish, French, Japanese and other languages?

  • Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese: both apps are strong. Pimsleur has five levels in these languages; Duolingo’s Spanish and French courses are its largest. Use Pimsleur for speaking and Duolingo for vocabulary. See our Pimsleur French review and Pimsleur Italian review.
  • Japanese, Korean and Mandarin: Pimsleur’s audio is a real help with pronunciation, pitch and tones, which a tap-based app teaches poorly. Neither app is enough for kanji or hanzi, so add a reading tool. See our Pimsleur Japanese review.
  • Less common languages: each app has languages the other lacks. On 24 October 2026 Duolingo listed Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Hawaiian and Navajo, which Pimsleur does not teach; Pimsleur’s list included Pashto, Twi, Ojibwe and Icelandic, which Duolingo does not. Many smaller Pimsleur languages have fewer than five levels, so check the depth before you pay.

Can you use Pimsleur and Duolingo together?

Yes, and for most beginners it is the best plan. The two cover each other’s blind spots: Pimsleur for the ear and the mouth, Duolingo for the eye and spelling. A simple week looks like this:

  • Every day: one Pimsleur lesson (30 minutes) on a walk or commute, answering out loud.
  • Every day: 5 to 10 minutes of Duolingo to keep a streak and review words in writing.
  • Once or twice a week: a short conversation with a tutor or a Duolingo Max call to use what you learned.
  • Once Pimsleur ends: keep Duolingo or move to reading, podcasts and a tutor; Pimsleur’s five levels are a foundation, not the finish.

Who should choose Pimsleur, and who should choose Duolingo

Choose Pimsleur if

  • you want to hold a basic conversation for a trip, a move or family, and freezing when you speak is your main problem
  • you have 30 minutes a day you could spend listening, such as a commute
  • pronunciation matters to you, especially in Japanese, Mandarin or another language with sounds English lacks
  • you are willing to pay, and will cancel before day 7 if it is not for you

Choose Duolingo if

  • you want to start free and see whether a language sticks
  • you prefer short sessions on a screen and like streaks and games
  • reading and spelling matter as much as speaking
  • you are learning a language Pimsleur covers only lightly

What learners say about Pimsleur and Duolingo

On Trustpilot, Pimsleur scored 4.1 from 214 reviews when we read it on 24 October 2026. Of the 60 most recent reviews (21 July to 22 October 2026), 40 gave five stars, mostly for building speaking confidence and for lessons that fit a commute or chores. Most of the low scores were about billing and customer service rather than the lessons: people charged when a trial converted, or refused a refund on a subscription. That matches Pimsleur’s own no-refund rule for subscriptions, so set a reminder before day 7.

On Reddit, the threads comparing the two land in the same place. Long-time Duolingo users credit it with vocabulary and a daily habit, and several say a long streak left them able to get by in shops and stations but struggling to follow replies. Pimsleur users credit it with speaking comfortably and being understood, while warning that it is slow and dry, explains little grammar, and teaches a fairly formal register. One recurring tip: some public libraries lend Pimsleur audio through apps such as Libby, which is a cheap way to try the method.

In October 2026, r/duolingo also had busy threads from long-time users unhappy with AI-generated voices and the removal of the old sentence forums. That is a matter of taste, but it is worth knowing if audio quality is why you would choose an app.

How we compared them

We read both companies’ own pages on 24 October 2026: Pimsleur’s course, plan, lifetime and FAQ pages, and Duolingo’s Super, Max and efficacy pages, plus Duolingo’s listings on the US App Store and Google Play. We read Pimsleur’s 60 most recent Trustpilot reviews and Reddit threads from learners who used both. Prices are what each company showed on that date and change often; learner outcomes are reported as learners describe them. We earn a commission if you start a Pimsleur subscription through our links; Duolingo pays us nothing, and that does not change the advice to start with free Duolingo if you are unsure. Frequently asked questions

Is Pimsleur better than Duolingo?

For speaking and listening, yes. Pimsleur makes you answer out loud in every lesson and trains pronunciation, while Duolingo is better for vocabulary, reading and building a daily habit, and its core course is free. Many learners use both.

Is Pimsleur worth it compared with Duolingo?

It is worth it if you will do the 30-minute lessons out loud and your goal is conversation. At $19.95 a month for one language (24 October 2026), the five-level course costs about $100 over five months. If you are not sure you will keep going, start with free Duolingo first.

How much does Pimsleur cost compared with Duolingo in 2026?

On 24 October 2026 Pimsleur cost $14.95 a month for Audio-Only, $19.95 for Premium, $20.95 a month or $164.95 a year for All Access, and from $150 one-time per level. Duolingo is free with ads; its US App Store listed Super Duolingo items from $9.99 to $119.99, including $83.99.

Can you become fluent with Pimsleur or Duolingo?

Not on their own. Learners who finish all five Pimsleur levels, about 75 hours of audio, usually describe themselves as around A2 in listening and speaking. Duolingo builds vocabulary and reading. Fluency needs hundreds more hours of listening, reading and conversation.

Which is better for beginners, Pimsleur or Duolingo?

Both start from zero. Duolingo is easier to start because it is free and lessons take a few minutes. Pimsleur is the better beginner course if you want to speak early, because every lesson has you answering out loud.

Can I use Pimsleur and Duolingo together?

Yes. Do one Pimsleur lesson a day for listening and speaking and five to ten minutes of Duolingo for reading, spelling and a streak. The two apps cover each other’s weak spots.

Does Pimsleur have a free trial?

Yes, 7 days, and it asks for a card up front. Cancel before the trial ends if it is not for you, because Pimsleur does not refund subscription charges. Access stops immediately if you cancel during the trial.

Is Duolingo Max better than Pimsleur for speaking?

They do different jobs. Max adds AI Video Call and Roleplay conversations on top of Duolingo’s course. Pimsleur builds speaking into every lesson. For a complete beginner who freezes when speaking, Pimsleur’s daily drill is the stronger tool.

Is Pimsleur or Duolingo better for Japanese?

Pimsleur is better for Japanese pronunciation and pitch, and its reading lessons cover hiragana and katakana. Neither teaches enough kanji, so add a dedicated reading tool. Duolingo is a good free way to review vocabulary.

What does Reddit say about Pimsleur vs Duolingo?

Reddit threads largely agree: Duolingo builds vocabulary, reading and a habit, while Pimsleur builds speaking confidence and pronunciation but is slow, explains little grammar and teaches a formal register. A common recommendation is to use both, then add a tutor.

Is Super Duolingo worth paying for?

Only if ads or running out of hearts or energy stop you from practicing. Super does not add a different course; the free lessons are the same. If you are going to pay for one app to improve speaking, Pimsleur or a tutor usually does more for the money.

What about Pimsleur vs Babbel vs Duolingo?

Pimsleur is audio-first and best for speaking, Babbel is structured screen lessons with grammar explanations, and Duolingo is the free, game-style option. See our Pimsleur vs Babbel and Babbel vs Duolingo comparisons.
