How Much Is Super Duolingo? Super, Max and Family Costs (2026)

Last updated: 27 September 2026; every price was read on the app stores that day. Written by Josh Hutcheson, OnlineCourseing editor. See our review methodology.

QUICK ANSWER

Bottom line: Super Duolingo was $83.99 a year on the US Google Play store on 27 September 2026 (about $7 a month, after a 14-day free trial). But Duolingo publishes no price list and tests prices on users, so the only number that is certain is the one in your own app. The free app has the same lessons.

  • Super, annual: $83.99 on Google Play US (the one price with a plan name attached)
  • Other Super prices: Apple’s US store lists Super items at $9.99, $12.99, $95.99 and $119.99, unlabelled
  • Max: higher than Super, app-only; no public price
  • Family: up to 6 accounts on one annual fee
  • Our take: pay only if you use Duolingo daily and the ads or mistake limit get in your way

“How much is Super Duolingo?” should be a one-line answer. It is not, because Duolingo does not print its prices anywhere on its website. The Super page offers a free week and a feature list, the help center explains how to subscribe, and the price only appears inside the app, after you sign in. That is why the figures on other sites disagree with each other and with what you see in your Shop.

So instead of repeating numbers from elsewhere, we read the two places where Duolingo’s prices are actually public, the Google Play and Apple App Store listings, on 27 September 2026, and we say plainly which figures are labelled and which are not. We also cover what each plan adds, how to see your own price, and whether paying is worth it at all.

Where What it says Price (US, 27 Sep 2026)
Google Play “Super Duolingo — 14-day trial, then…” $83.99 a year
Apple App Store In-app purchase named “Super Duolingo” $9.99
Apple App Store In-app purchase named “Super Duolingo” $12.99
Apple App Store In-app purchase named “Super Duolingo” $83.99
Apple App Store In-app purchase named “Super Duolingo” $95.99
Apple App Store In-app purchase named “Super Duolingo” (listed twice) $119.99
Google Play Range of all in-app purchases, including gems $0.99 to $239.99 per item
duolingo.com Super page, help center, gift page No price shown

Read the table carefully, because this is where most price guides go wrong. Only one figure comes with a plan description attached: the Google Play offer of a 14-day trial followed by $83.99 a year for Super. That works out to $7.00 a month. Apple’s store lists its most popular in-app purchases by name and price, and several are simply called “Super Duolingo”, but Apple does not say which is monthly, which is annual and which is the family plan. The $83.99 item matches the Google Play annual price. The others are consistent with a monthly plan, a family plan and different regional or promotional versions, but that is our reading, not Duolingo’s statement.

Google Play’s range of $0.99 to $239.99 per item covers everything sold in the app, including gems. The top of that range is well above any Super price, which fits with Max, the most expensive tier, being sold only in the app.

Why Duolingo won’t show you one price

Duolingo says so itself. Its Super Duolingo help page explains that the company “sometimes run[s] small tests on our subscriptions and features, to explore ways to provide learners with the ideal subscription options that meet their budget and learning goals.” In other words, two people in the same country can be offered different prices or even different features, and the page adds that some subscribers will not see Unlimited Hearts because it may be part of a test.

Three other things move the number:

  • Country. App store prices are set per country, so a price quoted for the US will not match the UK, India or Brazil.
  • Platform. You manage the subscription on the platform where you bought it (Apple, Google Play or the web), and each has its own prices, trials and upgrade rules. Google Play monthly subscribers, for example, cannot upgrade to the Family Plan.
  • Changes over time. Duolingo’s own Q2 2026 shareholder letter explains slower bookings growth partly by comparison with the year before, which included “the initial rollout of Energy, a price increase, and advertising outperformance.” Prices and the free-tier limits both change, so any figure is a snapshot.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Treat every Super Duolingo price you read online, including ours, as a guide. The price that applies to you is the one in your app’s Shop, on the platform you will pay through, on the day you subscribe.

How to see your exact Super Duolingo price

  1. In the app (iOS or Android): sign in, tap the gem icon at the top of the screen to open the Shop, then tap Get Super. The plans and prices for your account appear before you confirm.
  2. On the web: sign in at duolingo.com, click Shop in the side menu, then Get Super. Compare it with the app; the platforms price separately.
  3. For Max: open the app’s Practice hub (the dumbbell icon) and tap the Max upgrade button. Max cannot be bought on the web.
  4. Check the annual option. Annual plans are where the discount is; the only labelled US price we found was annual.

What Super adds over the free app

This is the most important thing to understand before you pay: Super does not add more lessons. Duolingo’s help center says it offers the same lesson content to all users. What you are buying is a smoother experience of the same course.

Feature (Duolingo’s own grid) Free Super Super Family Max
Learning content Yes Yes Yes Yes
Unlimited Hearts No Yes Yes Yes
Skills practice No Yes Yes Yes
Mistakes review No Yes Yes Yes
Free challenge entry No Yes Yes Yes
No ads No Yes Yes Yes
Accounts 1 1 Up to 6 1, or 6 on the Max family plan
Roleplay and Video Call with Lily (AI) No No No Yes, in supported courses
Where you can buy it n/a App or web App or web App only

The first six rows are the comparison grid on Duolingo’s own Super page, as it read on 27 September 2026; the Max column comes from its help center. Duolingo also notes that Unlimited Hearts may not appear for every subscriber because of ongoing tests.

The free app’s limit on mistakes is the real pressure point. Hearts (and Energy, the newer system Duolingo began rolling out in 2025, per its shareholder letter) cap how much you can do in a session before you have to wait, practise or pay. For a careful learner doing a lesson or two a day it rarely bites. For someone who likes to push through a whole unit in one sitting, it is the main reason to subscribe.

Duolingo Max: what the extra money buys

According to its help page, Max includes everything in Super plus two AI features:

  • Roleplay: practice conversations with Duolingo’s characters in set scenarios, such as ordering coffee or buying furniture. For English speakers it covers French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Italian, plus five English courses for speakers of other languages.
  • Video Call with Lily: an on-demand spoken conversation with an animated character, for learners of English, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese on iOS and Android.

Three practical limits. Max is sold only in the iOS and Android apps, not on the web. Its AI features only work in supported courses; learners of other languages still get Super’s benefits and nothing more. And upgrading from Super through Apple charges the full Max price, with a prorated refund for the time left on your Super plan.

Is Max worth the premium? The features are genuinely useful speaking practice, but they are practice with a script and a character, not a person. If speaking is your goal and you will pay Max prices, compare it with a speaking-first course or a human tutor before you upgrade; we do that below.

The Super Duolingo Family Plan

The Family Plan shares Super with up to five other people, six accounts in total, for one annual fee paid by the family manager. Anyone can be invited, in any country and learning any language, but there are rules worth knowing:

  • You cannot invite someone who already has an active paid Duolingo subscription; they must cancel and let it expire first.
  • Only the family manager can add or remove members.
  • Selling spare slots is banned, and Duolingo says it can close plans where slots have been resold.
  • Max is also available as a family plan for you and five others.
  • Joining or leaving a Family Plan does not affect anyone’s progress or streak.

Duolingo does not publish the family price. One of the unlabelled “Super Duolingo” items on Apple’s US store was $119.99; if that is the family annual plan, it is $20 per person per year across six accounts, far cheaper per head than any individual plan. Even with two people, a family plan at that price beats two individual annual subscriptions at $83.99 each ($167.98).

Monthly, annual or family: which is cheapest?

Situation Best option Why
Trying Super for the first time Free trial, then decide One week on the web, 14 days on Google Play US (27 Sep 2026)
One learner, daily habit Annual $83.99 a year on Google Play US is about $7 a month
One learner, a short trip or deadline Monthly No year-long commitment; cancel when you are done
Two or more learners Family Plan One annual fee covers up to six accounts
Learning Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese and want speaking practice Max, if you will use it Roleplay and Video Call only work in supported courses
Learning casually, a few times a week Free Same lessons; the limits rarely bite at that pace

How to get Super Duolingo free or cheaper

  • Use the free trial. Duolingo’s web page offers one week free; it sends a reminder on day 5 and charges on day 7, and you must cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. The US Google Play listing offered 14 days on 27 September 2026.
  • Join a Family Plan. If a friend or relative already pays for one, a spare slot is free to you.
  • Ask your employer. Duolingo for Business sells bulk Super subscriptions to employers at a discount.
  • Use a genuine promo code. Duolingo’s help center explains how to redeem promo codes, which it issues in its own campaigns. Treat “promo code” sites with scepticism.
  • Or pay nothing. The free app has every lesson. Paying is optional in a way it is not for most apps.

Is Super Duolingo worth it?

Super is worth paying for if three things are true: you open Duolingo most days, you learn in longer sessions where the mistake limit stops you, and the ads annoy you enough to cost you lessons. At roughly $7 a month on the annual plan, that is a fair price for removing friction from a habit you already have.

It is not worth it if you are hoping to learn faster by paying. Super gives you the same course. Duolingo’s strength is building a daily vocabulary habit, and its weakness, for free and paying users alike, is that it rarely gets people to hold a conversation. If that is your frustration, the extra $84 a year will not fix it. Spending the same money differently might.

What else the same money buys

If you are prepared to spend around $80 to $170 a year on learning a language, these are the honest alternatives. Prices were read on each company’s own site on 27 September 2026.

Option Price What it does that Duolingo does not
Super Duolingo $83.99 a year (Google Play US) Nothing new: same lessons, fewer limits
Babbel $107.40 a year, or $299.99 lifetime Explains grammar, lesson by lesson, in 14 languages
Pimsleur All Access $164.95 a year Makes you speak: 30-minute audio lessons, 51 languages
Online tutor (Preply, italki) Set by each tutor, per lesson A real conversation with correction
Free Duolingo plus a few tutor sessions The cost of the sessions Keeps the habit, adds speaking

Our recommendation for most people who are thinking about paying: keep Duolingo free as the daily habit, and put the money into whatever fixes your actual gap. If grammar never makes sense, that is Babbel (Babbel vs Duolingo compares them directly). If you can read but cannot speak, that is Pimsleur (our Pimsleur review) or a tutor on Preply or italki. Our Duolingo alternatives guide sorts every option by the reason you are looking.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Super Duolingo?

Duolingo does not publish a price list, and it tests different prices on different users. On 27 September 2026 the US Google Play listing showed Super Duolingo at $83.99 a year after a 14-day free trial, about $7 a month. Apple’s US App Store listed Super Duolingo in-app purchases at $9.99, $12.99, $83.99, $95.99 and $119.99, without saying which plan each one is. Your own price is shown in the app’s Shop before you pay.

How much does Duolingo Max cost?

Duolingo does not publish a Max price on its website, and Max cannot be bought on the web at all, only in the iOS and Android apps. It costs more than Super because it adds the AI features Roleplay and Video Call with Lily. Open the app, go to the Practice hub and tap the Max upgrade button to see your price.

Is Duolingo free?

Yes. The free app includes the same lesson content as the paid plans; Duolingo says it offers the same lessons to every user. Paying removes ads and the limit on mistakes and adds personalised practice. You can learn a language on Duolingo without ever paying.

How much is the Duolingo Family Plan?

Duolingo does not list the Family Plan price publicly. It covers up to six people, the manager plus five others, and the manager pays one annual fee. Apple’s US store listed a Super Duolingo item at $119.99, which if it is the family plan works out to $20 a person per year across six accounts. Check the Shop in the app for your price.

Is Super Duolingo worth it?

It is worth it if you use Duolingo every day and the ads or the mistake limit genuinely slow you down. It is not worth it if you are hoping it will teach you more: Super gives you the same lessons you already have. If you are ready to spend money on a language, that budget usually does more on a course that explains grammar or on a few sessions with a tutor.

Is Duolingo Max worth it over Super?

Only if you learn one of the languages where Roleplay and Video Call are available (for English speakers: Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese) and you will actually use the AI conversation practice. For most other learners, Super covers everything they use.

How do I get Super Duolingo for free?

New subscribers get a free trial: one week on the website, and the US Google Play listing offered 14 days on 27 September 2026. You can also join someone else’s Family Plan, and employers can buy discounted bulk subscriptions through Duolingo for Business. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you do not want to be charged.

Why is my Super Duolingo price different from my friend’s?

Because Duolingo prices by country and platform and runs tests on its subscriptions. Its help center says it runs small tests to find subscription options that suit different budgets. The price in your app, on the platform you subscribe through, is the one that applies to you.
