The 60-second verdict: The Udacity Site Reliability Engineer Nanodegree (nd087) is an intermediate-level program teaching the SRE methodology pioneered by Google. 60 hours covering reliability engineering, observability, incident response, and capacity planning. Best for: backend or DevOps engineers transitioning into SRE roles, platform engineers focused on reliability, infrastructure engineers seeking SRE certification prep.

The SRE role originated at Google and now exists at most major tech companies (Netflix, Stripe, Uber, etc.). SRE engineers are responsible for system reliability, scalability, and operational health — bridging the gap between traditional ops and software engineering. This Nanodegree teaches the discipline through hands-on projects designed to mirror real SRE workflows.
What is SRE? Service Level Indicators (SLI), Service Level Objectives (SLO), Service Level Agreements (SLA). Error budgets, the “toil” concept, the SRE-developer relationship.
Three pillars (metrics, logs, traces). Prometheus + Grafana for metrics. Distributed tracing with Jaeger. Structured logging best practices. Designing meaningful dashboards.
On-call practices, escalation paths, blameless postmortems, root cause analysis (5 Whys), runbook authoring. Practice running a simulated incident.
Load testing strategies, capacity modeling, performance optimization at the system level, queue theory basics, autoscaling design.
Take it if: backend engineer → SRE transition, DevOps engineer wanting reliability depth, infra engineer at growing company. Skip if: just starting in tech (build dev fundamentals first), or you target pure platform engineering (consider Cloud Native Nanodegree).
Partially. The Linux Foundation Certified Systems Administrator (LFCS) + Certified Site Reliability Engineer (in development as of 2026) are the closest cert paths. This Nanodegree builds knowledge but you’ll need exam-specific practice tests for cert prep. See AWS vs Azure for cloud-specific SRE paths.
Site Reliability Engineer, Production Engineer, DevOps Engineer (senior), Platform Engineer. Median: $135K-$200K base + on-call premium.
Strong, focused program for engineers transitioning into SRE roles. Best paired with on-the-job experience or a cloud-specific Nanodegree (Cloud DevOps, Cloud Native).
