Best Storytelling Courses (2026): 10 Picks, Checked Live

Last updated: October 2026. Written by Josh Hutcheson. See our review methodology.

The best storytelling courses in 2026 teach a craft with a clear structure: a person the audience cares about, a problem or tension, a turn, and a point that lands. Where they differ is the setting they train you for. Some are built for talks and presentations, some for marketing and brands, some for leaders who need to persuade, and some for writers. We re-opened every course below on its live listing on 17 October 2026, recorded its rating, enrollment, length and last update, and read five threads from marketers, editors and writers on Reddit to see which courses and books people actually recommend.

Quick verdict

For speaking and presenting, The Complete Storytelling Course for Speaking & Presenting on Udemy is the best-rated and most current (4.6 from 8,323 ratings, updated July 2026). For a university credential, Macquarie University’s Storytelling and Influencing on Coursera is the standout (4.8 from 2,533 reviews, 167,991 learners). For a short, focused method, The Story Course on Udemy (4.5 from 4,962 ratings, 3 hours) is the best value. For marketing, start with the Entrepreneur’s Guide (pick 3). To start free, Pixar in a Box on Khan Academy and TED’s storytelling playlist cost nothing.

1. The Complete Storytelling Course for Speaking & Presenting — best overall

TJ Walker’s Udemy course is the best-rated and most current storytelling course we found: 4.6 from 8,323 ratings, 73,141 students and a July 2026 update on 17 October 2026. It is built for people who tell stories out loud: speakers, presenters, managers and anyone pitching. You learn how to find the story inside your material, shape it so it has stakes and a point, and deliver it so the audience feels something.

One thing changed since we last reviewed it: the course has grown to 35.5 hours of video, much of it practice examples and demonstrations. Treat it like a library. The core lessons on story structure and delivery come first, and you can stop once you are telling your own stories well. Because it is a Udemy purchase, you keep it for life.

Best for: talks, pitches, meetings and presentations.  Worth knowing: it is long; skim the examples once you have the method.

2. Storytelling and Influencing: Communicate with Impact (Macquarie) — best credential

For a university-backed certificate, Macquarie University’s Storytelling and Influencing: Communicate with Impact on Coursera is the strongest pick: 4.8 from 2,533 reviews with 167,991 learners enrolled on 17 October 2026. It has six modules of about three hours each, which Coursera estimates at two weeks. It treats storytelling as a tool for influence and leadership (how to use narrative to bring stakeholders with you, not just entertain them), with graded work and a shareable certificate.

It sits inside a Macquarie specialization on communication, so you can continue if it suits you. It is included in Coursera Plus, which was $59 a month with a 7-day free trial, or $399 a year, on 17 October 2026. Finishing in two weeks keeps the cost to one month.

Best for: managers and anyone whose stories are meant to persuade.  Worth knowing: it is more about influence than performance; pair it with pick 1 for delivery.

3. The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Storytelling in Marketing — best for marketing

If your goal is brand and marketing storytelling rather than stage delivery, Alex Glod’s The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Storytelling in Marketing is the better fit: 4.3 from 2,126 ratings, 12,300 students and 2 hours, last updated April 2025. It applies narrative to brand messaging, content and campaigns, showing founders and marketers how to make a product memorable and a brand worth following.

It is short and has not been updated since April 2025, so treat it as a framework rather than a current playbook for each social platform. Marketers on Reddit also point to Donald Miller’s book Building a StoryBrand for the same problem. Our email marketing and branding courses guides cover the channels where you will use it.

What about the Shane Snow storytelling course?

Many people search for Shane Snow on Storytelling, so here is a straight answer. It is a concise, well-made course on LinkedIn Learning, so you need a LinkedIn Learning subscription (included with LinkedIn Premium, and free through many public libraries) to take it. The listing makes two things clear: it runs just 1 hour 8 minutes, and it was released on 13 September 2016, so it is ten years old. The fundamentals hold up, but nothing in it reflects how storytelling works on today’s platforms. If you already have access, it is worth an hour. If not, picks 1 to 3 cover the same ground without a separate subscription. We earn nothing from LinkedIn Learning.

Learning from master storytellers

If you want craft from famous writers rather than a business skills course, MasterClass has three classes worth your time: Salman Rushdie Teaches Storytelling and Writing (19 lessons, 4 hours 17 minutes, on structure, opening lines and character), David Sedaris Teaches Storytelling and Humor (14 lessons, 3 hours 23 minutes, on finding stories in everyday life and telling them aloud) and Margaret Atwood Teaches Creative Writing (23 lessons, 3 hours 43 minutes). Sedaris’s class is the closest to spoken, personal storytelling.

They sit behind a MasterClass membership, billed annually only: $120 a year for Standard, $180 for Plus and $240 for Premium on 17 October 2026, each including all 200+ classes, with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on first purchases and automatic renewal each year. One Reddit reviewer found the Sedaris class too general (“write every day”), which matches our view: these are inspiration, not step-by-step instruction. See our MasterClass pricing guide before you buy.

Where will you use storytelling?

The best course depends on the setting. More focused picks for each:

4. The Story Course: Storytelling Masterclass (Udemy): a short, complete method

Paul Jenkins’s The Story Course (4.5 from 4,962 ratings, 29,350 students, 3 hours, last updated March 2024) teaches how to create, write and tell stories for any audience, in a fraction of the time pick 1 takes. It is the best value if you want one method you can apply to talks, posts and pitches alike.

5. Storytelling for High-Impact Business Presentations (Udemy): data storytelling

From Maven Analytics, this course (4.4 from 71 ratings, 1,069 students, 3.5 hours, updated June 2026) applies storytelling and data visualization to work presentations: turning a chart into a recommendation people act on. Its rating rests on a small sample, but it is current and fills a gap the general courses leave. For more on charts, see our data visualization courses, and for the classic book on the topic, Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic’s Storytelling with Data.

6. Creative Direction: Use Storytelling to Pitch and Sell Ideas (Domestika): pitching creative work

Ray Smiling’s Domestika course (4 hours 59 minutes, 11,784 students, 100% positive reviews on 17 October 2026) teaches designers, agencies and creatives to pitch ideas as stories. It listed at $30.99, with a 98% discount showing at checkout that day, and ends in a project you share with other students.

8. Storytelling for Social Change (edX, University of Michigan): advocacy

MichiganX’s Storytelling for Social Change is self-paced over five weeks and free to register; a verified certificate cost $236 on 17 October 2026 (shown at $212.40 with an edX discount). It suits nonprofit staff, organizers and anyone using story to drive change.

  • Talks and presentations: pick 1, then our public speaking and presentation guides.
  • Marketing and brand: the Entrepreneur’s Guide (pick 3) or The Story Course (pick 4).
  • Leadership and influence: the Macquarie course on Coursera.
  • Data at work: the Maven Analytics course.
  • Pitching creative work: the Domestika course.
  • Writing and craft: the MasterClass author classes.
  • Teaching with stories: the University of Houston’s Digital Storytelling course on Coursera (4.5 from 252 reviews, 72,036 learners) is built for teachers.

What a storytelling course teaches

  • Story structure: the hook, the tension or stakes, the turn, and the resolution that carries meaning.
  • Finding the story: spotting the narrative inside data, a case study or your own experience.
  • Character and stakes: giving the audience someone to care about and a reason to keep listening.
  • Change: as one film editor on Reddit put it, a story is about change, so show someone who is different at the end than at the start.
  • Delivery: pacing, detail and emotion when telling a story aloud.
  • Application: adapting the same story to a pitch, a post, a brand message or a leadership moment.

Common storytelling mistakes these courses fix

  • Leading with data, not people. Facts rarely move an audience on their own; the person behind the facts does. Courses teach you to put a human at the center.
  • No tension. A story without a problem or stakes is a list of events. The structure lessons fix this directly.
  • Starting with background. Marketers on Reddit advise opening with something the audience does not already know, then filling in context.
  • Too much detail. Good storytelling is ruthless about what to cut.
  • No clear meaning. A story that does not land on a point is forgettable.
  • Waiting until it is perfect. Several people on Reddit said the skill only improves through reps and feedback, so publish or tell the story and adjust.

Free ways to learn storytelling

  • Pixar in a Box: The Art of Storytelling on Khan Academy: free video lessons from Pixar’s story artists on how they build characters and structure stories.
  • TED’s How to Tell a Story playlist: talks including Andrew Stanton’s The Clues to a Great Story (the filmmaker behind Toy Story and WALL-E) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Danger of a Single Story. No account needed.
  • Free university courses: the Michigan course on edX can be audited free, and Coursera courses can be previewed or taken during a free trial.
  • Lectures: a writer on Reddit recommended Brandon Sanderson’s recorded university lectures on fiction writing, free on YouTube.
  • Books from your library: Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks (finding stories in everyday life), Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath, Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller (marketing) and Save the Cat by Blake Snyder (structure) all came up in Reddit threads.

Then practice the simplest exercise there is: take a dry fact from your work and retell it as a 90-second story with a person, a problem and a turn. Do it weekly and the skill builds quickly.

How we chose

We searched Udemy, Coursera, edX, Domestika, MasterClass and LinkedIn Learning for storytelling courses and opened each listing on 17 October 2026, recording rating, number of ratings, enrollment, length and last update. Courses had to teach a transferable storytelling method or a clear application (speaking, marketing, data, pitching, advocacy). We favored large rating samples, flagged older and very short courses, and checked our picks against five Reddit threads where marketers, editors and writers discussed how they learned. Full process: how we review.
