Copywriting is writing that asks the reader to do something: buy, sign up, click, reply. The skill is mostly thinking rather than wordsmithing, which is why the best courses spend as much time on research, customer psychology and structure as on headlines. This guide covers free and paid options, and says plainly which ones are worth your time.

CORRECTION

An earlier version of this guide credited several Udemy courses to the wrong instructors, described MasterClass as a free course with certification, and listed a free Copyhackers course that has since moved into its paid Copy School. We re-checked every course on 25 September 2026, removed picks we could no longer verify or that had not been updated in years, and rebuilt the list below.

What is copywriting, and how is it different from content writing?

Copywriting is writing with a single commercial goal: getting a specific reader to take a specific action. A landing page, a product description, an email subject line and a Google ad are all copy. Content writing, by contrast, mainly informs or entertains, such as a blog post, a guide or a newsletter article, and earns trust over time rather than asking for an immediate action.

The two overlap, and many writers do both, but they are judged differently. Copy is judged by conversions: sign-ups, sales, click-through rates. Content is judged by reach, engagement and search traffic. That difference is why a copywriting course spends so much time on customer research, offers and calls to action, and why a good copywriter tests two headlines instead of arguing about which one sounds better.

Types of copywriting you can specialize in

  • Web and landing page copy: home pages, product pages and sign-up pages, where every section has a conversion job.
  • Email copy: welcome sequences, launches and newsletters that sell, one of the most consistently paid specialties.
  • Advertising copy: search ads, social ads and billboards, where space is tiny and testing is constant.
  • SEO copywriting: pages written to rank in search and convert the traffic they earn.
  • B2B and technical copy: case studies, white papers and product explainers for longer, considered purchases.
  • Brand and creative copy: taglines, campaigns and brand voice, closest to what agencies call creative work.

Most courses teach the shared foundation first. Pick a specialty once you know which kind of writing you enjoy, then build your portfolio in that format.

How we chose these courses

We loaded every course page on 25 September 2026 and recorded the instructor, rating, number of ratings, length and last-updated date from the provider’s own page. We favored courses that are still maintained, that teach transferable principles rather than one platform’s tricks, and that include exercises you can turn into portfolio samples. Courses last updated before 2021, or with only a few hundred ratings and no other signal of quality, did not make the list.

1. The Complete Copywriting Course (Udemy) — best for beginners

The Complete Copywriting Course: Write to Sell Like a Pro, from the Codestars team, is the most-reviewed copywriting course on Udemy we found: 4.5 from 26,161 ratings and more than 101,000 students, last updated in February 2026. In about three hours it covers the sales psychology behind persuasive copy, how to move readers to act without pressure, and practical fixes for blank-page anxiety.

The honest catch: three hours gives you principles, not practice volume. Treat it as the foundation and write real samples alongside it. Udemy courses usually sell for under $20 during its frequent sales, with lifetime access.

2. Alan Sharpe’s 30-hr Copywriting Masterclass (Udemy) — most in-depth

If you want to write copy professionally, Alan Sharpe’s Copywriting Masterclass is the deepest course here: about 28.5 hours, rated 4.6 from 5,106 ratings, and updated in August 2026. It works through the assignments clients actually commission, from white papers and landing pages to Google ads, ecommerce pages, billboards and email, and teaches the building blocks of each: headlines, opening lines, subheads, body copy, transitions and calls to action.

The honest catch: it is long, and the value comes from doing the exercises. If you only need to improve your own marketing, the shorter courses are enough.

3. Modern Copywriting (Udemy) — best for formulas and brand voice

Evan Kimbrell’s Modern Copywriting: Writing Copy That Sells (about 7 hours, 4.5 from 5,769 ratings, 45,000+ students, updated May 2026) is the most structured of the mid-length options. It covers researching your audience, competitors and product, defining a brand voice, and proven formulas that take the guesswork out of a first draft. It suits marketers and founders who write their own copy and want a repeatable process.

4. The Ultimate Copywriting Course (Udemy) — best for sales and social copy

Joshua George’s The Ultimate Copywriting Course is the most recently updated pick (September 2026) and the highest rated, at 4.7 from 2,588 ratings. In about three hours it focuses on sales copy, headlines and social media posts, which makes it a good fit for small business owners and social media managers.

The honest catch: its review base is a tenth the size of the Codestars course, so the rating is less proven.

5. Content Creation and Copywriting Specialization (Coursera) — best if you want a certificate

Coursera’s own Content Creation and Copywriting Specialization is a seven-course intermediate program taught by a team of instructors led by Jordan Wilson. It pairs copywriting with content strategy, visual content, SEO and generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Canva, and ends with a shareable certificate. It is rated 4.5 from 801 reviews with about 5,400 learners.

The honest catch: it is broader than copywriting and newer than the Udemy picks, with a much smaller track record. Choose it if you want a certificate and AI workflow skills; choose Udemy if you want pure copywriting technique. Wondering what a Coursera certificate is worth? See are Coursera certificates worth it.

The best free copywriting courses

Copywriting 101 (Copyblogger)

Copyblogger’s Copywriting 101 is a free ebook plus a library of articles on headlines, persuasion and structure from one of the longest-running copywriting blogs. It is the best free foundation we found. Copyblogger also sells an Academy membership for $99 that adds two full copywriting courses and seven more marketing courses. We have no affiliate relationship with Copyblogger.

Copywriting Quick Start (Udemy, free)

Tyler Speegle’s Copywriting Quick Start: Top Free Writing Tools & Hacks is free on Udemy. It is short, about 35 minutes across 15 lectures, and focuses on free tools for brainstorming and editing rather than on copywriting theory. It is rated 4.3 from 7,897 ratings. Take it as a quick add-on, not a foundation.

What happened to Copyhackers’ free course?

Copyhackers’ free Conversion Copywriting 101 course was a staple of older lists, including earlier versions of this one. Its address now leads to “Conversion Copywriting for Beginners,” a 10-lesson course inside Copyhackers’ Copy School, where the other courses cost $297 to $997. Joanna Wiebe’s material remains highly regarded; just do not expect the old free course.

6. Kopywriting Kourse — best for feedback on your copy

Neville Medhora’s Kopywriting Kourse is a membership rather than a single course: a library of long and short video lessons, a forum where members review each other’s copy, and live weekly office hours with Neville. It costs $97 a month, or $750 for the first year and $365 a year after that. Feedback on real work is the fastest way to improve, and it is what the self-paced courses above lack. We have no affiliate relationship with Kopywriting Kourse.

7. MasterClass — best for creative and brand thinking

MasterClass does not teach copywriting technique, but Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein Teach Advertising and Creativity (18 lessons, 2 hours 25 minutes) is a useful look at how two advertising founders develop ideas, work with brands and tell a story in 30 seconds. For long-form storytelling, Malcolm Gladwell Teaches Writing (24 lessons, 4 hours 54 minutes) covers structure, interviewing, tone and voice. MasterClass memberships are billed annually, starting at $10 a month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. It is not free, and it does not issue certifications.

What a good copywriting course should teach

Whatever you choose, check that the syllabus covers the parts of the job that matter most:

  • Research first: understanding the customer, the product and the competition before writing a word.
  • Benefits over features: translating what a product does into why the reader should care.
  • Headlines and openings: most readers never get past them, so good courses spend real time here.
  • Structure and formulas: frameworks such as AIDA (attention, interest, desire, action) and PAS (problem, agitate, solve) give a first draft its shape.
  • Calls to action: telling the reader exactly what to do next, and why now.
  • Editing and testing: cutting ruthlessly and treating copy as something to measure, not just write.

Do you need a copywriting certification?

No. There is no single accredited copywriting certification that clients or employers expect. Course certificates, including Coursera’s and Udemy’s, show that you finished training; they do not prove you can write copy that sells. What gets copywriters hired is a portfolio of samples and, ideally, results. Use your course exercises to build three to five polished samples in the format you want to be paid for: a landing page, an email sequence, a product page.

On pay, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics groups copywriters with writers and authors, whose median pay was $76,910 in 2025. It projects little or no change in that occupation’s employment from 2025 to 2035, which is one more reason a strong portfolio matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best copywriting course for beginners?

For most beginners, The Complete Copywriting Course on Udemy is the best start: about 3 hours, rated 4.5 from 26,000+ ratings, and usually under $20 on sale. If you want depth rather than speed, Alan Sharpe’s 28-hour Copywriting Masterclass covers every common assignment from landing pages to email.

Are there good free copywriting courses?

Yes. Copyblogger’s free Copywriting 101 ebook and article library is one of the best free foundations, and Udemy’s Copywriting Quick Start is a free 35-minute course. Free material covers the principles well; paid courses add structure, exercises and feedback.

Is there an accredited copywriting certification?

No single accredited copywriting certification is recognized across the industry. Course certificates, including Coursera’s, prove you completed training. Clients and employers judge copywriters by their portfolio and results, so build samples while you learn.

How long does it take to learn copywriting?

You can learn the core principles in a few weeks of part-time study. Getting good takes months of writing, testing and revising real copy. A 3-hour Udemy course gives you the frameworks; a longer course or a feedback community helps you apply them.

How much do copywriters earn?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics groups copywriters with writers and authors, whose median pay was $76,910 in 2025. Freelance copywriters’ income varies widely with niche and client base.

Is MasterClass good for learning copywriting?

MasterClass is better for creative thinking and storytelling than for copywriting technique. Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein’s advertising class is the closest fit. Memberships are billed annually, starting at $10 a month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
