Best for startups and outbound: Sales Valley by Patrick Dang (Udemy)
Best free: HubSpot Academy’s Inbound Sales Certification
Premium pick for closers: Chris Voss Teaches The Art of Negotiation (MasterClass)
Bottom line: a $15-to-$20 course plus a lot of practice beats any expensive program for an individual rep. Pay more only for a credential you need or a negotiation skill you will use on every deal.

Sales is one of the few jobs where better technique shows up directly in your pay. Whether you are a new SDR, a founder doing your own selling, or a rep stuck at the same quota, structured training gives you a repeatable way to prospect, run discovery, handle objections and close without pushing. The hard part is separating the useful courses from the motivational content.

We opened every course below on 17 October 2026 and recorded its rating, enrollment and last update, and we read the r/sales threads where working salespeople argue about what actually helped them. Here is the shortlist, including the free option that beats many paid ones.

1. Sales Training: Practical Sales Techniques (Chris Croft): best overall

Chris Croft’s course is the best all-round sales training we found, and Class Central picks it as its best short introduction too. On 17 October 2026 it held a 4.6 rating from 36,140 ratings and 116,350 students, with a May 2025 update. In about two and a half hours it walks the whole cycle in a calm, no-hype style: building rapport, asking questions, handling objections, reading the buyer and closing without pressure. It works for B2B and B2C, which is why it suits most first-time buyers.

Best for: new salespeople and anyone who sells part of the time.  Worth knowing: it is a foundation, not a methodology like Sandler or SPIN; pair it with real calls.

2. B2B Sales Skills Training: Consultative Selling Master Class: best for B2B

If you sell to businesses, Lawrence M. Miller’s Consultative Selling Master Class is the freshest strong option: 4.6 from 5,338 ratings, 18,694 students and an update in February 2026. It teaches the consultative approach that business buyers respond to: diagnosing the problem, building trust with several stakeholders, and positioning a solution instead of pitching features. For account executives it is more relevant than generic closing courses.

Best for: B2B reps and account executives.  Worth knowing: six hours of video; the value comes from applying the discovery questions on live calls.

3. Salesforce Sales Development Representative Professional Certificate: best for a career change

If you want a job in tech sales rather than better technique in the job you have, this is the program built for it. Salesforce designed the five-course series for entry-level SDR roles and says no degree or prior experience is required. Coursera estimates about three months at 10 hours a week. On 17 October 2026 it showed 56,598 learners and a 4.4 rating from 622 course reviews. You finish with a Salesforce-branded career certificate, which is more useful on a first sales resume than a Udemy completion certificate.

Best for: career changers aiming at SDR and BDR roles.  Worth knowing: it is paid through a Coursera subscription, so finishing faster costs less; the rating is a little lower than the Udemy picks.

4. Successful Negotiation (University of Michigan): best for negotiation

Professor George Siedel’s course is one of Coursera’s most popular: 1,659,088 learners and a 4.8 rating from 20,156 reviews on 17 October 2026. It teaches four steps to a successful negotiation, from planning your strategy to closing with a contract, in short interactive videos, and you finish by running a real negotiation with a partner who gives you feedback. For salespeople it covers the stage most sales courses stop before: agreeing price and terms. You can earn a course certificate carrying the University of Michigan name.

Best for: anyone who negotiates price or contracts.  Worth knowing: it is a negotiation course, not a prospecting course; combine it with pick 1 or 2.

See Successful Negotiation on Coursera →

5. Sales Valley (Patrick Dang): best for startups and outbound

For founders and first sales hires who must build pipeline from nothing, Patrick Dang’s Sales Valley is the most popular outbound course here: 4.4 from 8,208 ratings and 36,679 students. It is built around prospecting: cold email, LinkedIn outreach, discovery calls and moving deals forward. The honest caveat is its last update in June 2021. The fundamentals hold, but it predates AI-assisted prospecting tools and current email deliverability rules, so treat the tool advice as dated.

Best for: founders and early sales hires.  Worth knowing: last updated June 2021.

6. HubSpot Academy Inbound Sales Certification: best free sales training

Before you pay for anything, take HubSpot Academy’s Inbound Sales Certification course. It is free, it runs seven lessons and 22 videos, and it ends in a free certification. It covers identifying the right buyers, personalized outreach, exploratory conversations and sales presentations, built for buyers who research before they talk to you, which is how most software and service buying works now. For many people the best combination is HubSpot’s free course for the framework plus one paid course for technique.

Best for: anyone on a budget and anyone in SaaS.  Worth knowing: HubSpot teaches with its own CRM in mind; the principles transfer to any tool. We earn nothing from this pick.

7. Chris Voss Teaches The Art of Negotiation (MasterClass): premium pick for closers

Every course above reaches the same point: the deal is qualified, objections are handled, and now someone has to agree a number. Chris Voss, the former FBI lead international kidnapping negotiator who wrote Never Split the Difference, teaches his method in 18 lessons totaling 3 hours 4 minutes: tactical empathy, mirroring, labeling and calibrated “how” questions, with role-play. It is the same material salespeople on Reddit recommend from the book, taught by him.

MasterClass sells annual memberships only: $120 a year for Standard, $180 for Plus and $240 for Premium, and every plan includes all 200+ classes. First purchases made directly on masterclass.com carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee; renewals are not refundable. See our MasterClass pricing guide for the details.

Best for: account executives, founders and agency owners whose pay depends on terms.  Skip if: you are new to sales and still need the fundamentals; start with pick 1.

How to choose a sales course

Most sales courses look alike on the listing page. Five checks separate them:

  1. Last update. Prospecting tools and email rules change; a course last updated before 2024 will be dated on outreach tactics, even if its discovery and closing advice still holds.
  2. Rating and volume together. A 4.6 from tens of thousands of ratings tells you more than a 4.9 from a few hundred.
  3. Match to your sale. B2C and short cycles need rapport and closing; B2B needs discovery and stakeholder work; founders need prospecting first.
  4. Practice built in. Prefer courses with scripts, role-plays or a real exercise, like the negotiation you run in the Michigan course, over lectures alone.
  5. Credential, only if you need one. Pay for a certificate when you are changing careers; for skill alone, a cheap course and real calls are enough.

How we checked these courses

On 17 October 2026 we opened each course page in a browser and recorded its rating, number of ratings or reviews, learners, length and last update, and confirmed every link goes to the course it names. We did not take the courses end to end for this update, so we do not claim to have tested them; the rankings weigh those public numbers, how current each course is, how well it fits a type of sales job, and what working salespeople said about training in r/sales. Prices on Udemy and Coursera change often, so we describe them rather than quote a sale price that will not last.

Sales courses vs sales training programs

Searches split between “sales courses” and “sales training programs,” and the difference is mostly scale and who pays. A self-paced course, like every pick above, suits an individual rep or founder learning alone for the price of a meal. A sales training program usually means a named methodology taught to a whole team, often live, and paid for by the employer.

Sales training programs for companies

If you are equipping a team rather than yourself, the established methodologies are the usual shortlist. None of them is on an affiliate network we use, and we link none of them; we name them because sales leaders compare them:

  • Sandler. A long-running methodology built on qualifying hard and letting the buyer reach their own conclusions. Salespeople on Reddit still quote its rules years after taking it.
  • SPIN Selling (Huthwaite). Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff questions, from Neil Rackham’s research on large B2B sales.
  • Challenger. Built on the idea that top B2B reps teach the buyer something new and take control of the conversation.
  • Miller Heiman (Korn Ferry). Strategic and large-account selling, common in enterprise sales teams.

These programs are usually sold to companies and priced by quote, so ask each provider directly. For an individual, the books behind them (below) cover most of the method for a fraction of the cost.

What salespeople on Reddit recommend instead of courses

Ask r/sales for “the #1 sales course” and the most upvoted answers are blunt: pick up the phone, and get a job where you have to sell. One rep said sales training is far more useful after a few months of high activity than before it, because until then you have nothing to apply it to. That is the right way to use every course on this page: take one, then put it to work on real calls.

The books those threads recommend most often are a cheap complement:

  • Fanatical Prospecting by Jeb Blount, for building pipeline
  • Gap Selling by Keenan, for discovery
  • Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, for negotiation
  • The Sandler Rules and Prospecting the Sandler Way, for the Sandler method
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, for the basics of rapport

Is there a recognized sales certification?

There is no single licensing body for sales, but a few credentials carry weight:

  • HubSpot Academy certifications, including Inbound Sales: free and well known in software and SaaS sales.
  • Coursera professional certificates, such as Salesforce’s SDR certificate: useful for a first sales job.
  • Methodology certifications (Sandler, SPIN, Challenger): respected in enterprise sales, usually employer-funded.
  • Salesforce certifications: relevant if your role is sales operations or CRM administration; see our Salesforce certification guide.
  • Udemy completion certificates: fine as personal proof, not an industry credential.

For most salespeople, results matter more than any certificate. Learn one solid method, add a HubSpot certification if you want a credential, and let your numbers speak.

What good sales training actually teaches

  • Prospecting: finding and reaching the right buyers by email, phone, LinkedIn and referrals.
  • Discovery and qualifying: the questions that reveal real needs and rule out bad-fit deals early.
  • Handling objections: answering price, timing and “I’ll think about it” without getting defensive.
  • Value selling: selling outcomes instead of competing on price.
  • Negotiation and closing: agreeing terms and asking for the deal cleanly.
  • Follow-up: the habits that turn one sale into many.

B2C vs B2B sales: do you need different training?

To an extent. The core skills carry across both, but the emphasis differs. B2C selling, with shorter cycles, rewards rapport, urgency and confident closing; Chris Croft’s course covers it well. B2B selling, with longer cycles and several stakeholders, rewards consultative discovery, value framing and patience; that is what the Consultative Selling Master Class teaches.

Common sales mistakes good training fixes

  • Pitching before understanding. Talking about the product before diagnosing the need.
  • Fearing objections. Treating “it’s too expensive” as a rejection instead of a question.
  • Competing on price. Discounting instead of selling value, which teaches buyers to push harder.
  • Weak prospecting. Waiting for leads instead of building pipeline, the gap Sales Valley targets.
  • No follow-up system. Most deals are lost in the silence after the first conversation.

What does sales training cost?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best online sales training course?

For all-round skills, Chris Croft’s Sales Training: Practical Sales Techniques on Udemy: 4.6 from 36,140 ratings, 116,350 students and a May 2025 update. For B2B, the Consultative Selling Master Class (updated February 2026). For a free start, HubSpot Academy’s Inbound Sales Certification.

Can I get sales training for free?

Yes. HubSpot Academy’s Inbound Sales Certification course is free, runs seven lessons and 22 videos, and ends in a free certification. It is the best no-cost starting point.

Is there a recognized sales certification?

There is no single sales license. HubSpot Academy certifications are free and known in SaaS sales; Coursera professional certificates such as Salesforce’s SDR certificate help with a first sales job; Sandler, SPIN and Challenger certifications carry weight in enterprise sales but are usually employer-funded.

How do I become a certified sales professional?

Pick a credential that matches your goal: a free HubSpot Inbound Sales certification for a quick, recognized badge, the Salesforce SDR Professional Certificate on Coursera for a career change into tech sales, or a methodology certification such as Sandler through your employer.

How long does sales training take?

The Udemy courses here run 2.5 to 6 hours, so you can cover the fundamentals in a weekend. The Salesforce SDR certificate takes about three months at 10 hours a week. Real skill comes from using the techniques on live calls afterward.

What is the best sales course for B2B?

The Consultative Selling Master Class, focused on the needs-diagnosis approach business buyers respond to and updated in February 2026. Sales Valley is the better choice if your B2B work is outbound prospecting for a startup.

What are the best sales training programs for companies?

The usual shortlist is Sandler, SPIN Selling from Huthwaite, Challenger and Miller Heiman from Korn Ferry. They are sold to teams and priced by quote, so ask each provider for a proposal.

Do I need a sales course if I am a founder?

If you do your own selling, yes. Founders who learn structured prospecting and discovery close more and waste less time. Sales Valley is built for that situation, and HubSpot Academy’s free course is a low-cost complement.
