QuickBooks runs the books for millions of small businesses, and learning it properly saves either bookkeeper fees or a lot of month-end stress. We checked every course below on Udemy and Coursera in August 2026 — rating, review count and the date it was last updated — because software training ages badly in a way that general business courses do not.

First: QuickBooks Online or Desktop? (This has changed)

Most QuickBooks training guides still present Online and Desktop as two equal choices. That is out of date, and buying the wrong training is the most expensive mistake on this page.

Intuit has moved decisively away from Desktop. Its own QuickBooks Desktop page now leads with “Level up from QuickBooks Desktop” and navigation links reading “Upgrade from Desktop” and “How to Switch.” The only Desktop product still in the line-up is QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, aimed at manufacturers and wholesalers with complex inventory and up to 40 users. Desktop Pro and Premier — the versions most small businesses used — are no longer sold there. Intuit is also offering to handle migration off Desktop for existing customers, describing it as worth up to $9,000.

Ratings, review counts and last-updated dates read from each course page in August 2026. Review counts matter as much as the star rating — a 4.6 from 271 reviews is a weaker signal than a 4.5 from 756.

1. Best overall paid course — QuickBooks Pro & QuickBooks Online 4-Course Bundle

Rated 4.5 from 756 ratings across 3,755 students, and last updated April 2026 — the strongest combination of rating, sample size and freshness in this category. It teaches QuickBooks Online and Desktop side by side across four courses.

Given what’s happened to Desktop, the dual coverage is now less of a selling point than it was — but it’s still the right pick if you support clients on both, and the QBO half stands on its own. 2. Best for business owners — QuickBooks Online Made Simple

If you run a business and simply need clean books in QuickBooks Online, this is the most direct route. It skips accountant-level theory for the daily reality: invoicing, expenses, reconciling and reading your own reports. It was last updated February 2026, which matters more here than anywhere else on the page because QBO’s interface changes regularly.

One honest caveat: it holds 4.3 stars from only 135 ratings across about 1,000 students. That’s a small sample, so treat the score as indicative rather than settled. We’re recommending it on freshness and fit rather than weight of evidence, and if you want the safer bet on numbers alone, take the bundle above.

3. Best for a bookkeeping career — Intuit Bookkeeping Professional Certificate

If your goal is employment rather than running your own books, this is the strongest option on the page. It’s built by Intuit itself and hosted on Coursera, and unlike a Udemy course it produces a credential from the company that makes the software. It also feeds directly into the ProAdvisor path described below.

It runs on a Coursera subscription rather than a one-off fee, so the faster you work the less you pay — the same economics as any Coursera certificate. For someone aiming at a bookkeeping job or freelance client work, the vendor’s own credential is worth more than a third-party course.

4. For starting a bookkeeping business — with a date warning

This course frames QuickBooks Online around running a bookkeeping business — client workflows, monthly processes, and the practical side of doing books for other people. It holds 4.5 stars from 510 ratings and has by far the largest student body here at 38,184.

5. For existing Desktop users only — Desktop Beginner-Advanced Masterclass

The highest star rating on the page at 4.6, though from a modest 271 ratings, and kept current — last updated April 2026. It covers the Desktop interface and the workflows that differ from Online.

Only buy this if you are already on Desktop. Given Intuit’s withdrawal of Desktop Pro and Premier, learning Desktop from scratch in 2026 is investing in a platform its own maker is steering customers away from. Which QuickBooks certification is best?

This is the question we get asked most, and the answer is simpler than the marketing suggests: the certifications that count come from Intuit, not from course platforms. A Udemy completion certificate is not a QuickBooks certification and no employer treats it as one.

Intuit’s ProAdvisor programme offers two certifications that matter:

• QuickBooks Online Certification (Level 1) — the core credential, proving you can run QBO competently. This is the one most people mean by “QuickBooks certified.”
• Intuit Bookkeeping Certification — broader than the software, covering bookkeeping practice itself. Better suited if you want to work for clients rather than one employer.

If you can only do one, do QuickBooks Online Certification Level 1. It is the most widely recognised, it is the one job listings name, and it is free.

The ProAdvisor programme, explained

Intuit’s ProAdvisor programme is free to sign up for, and it is the single best-value thing on this page — we earn nothing from recommending it. Joining gives you the training materials, the certification exams, and a free QuickBooks Online Accountant subscription to practise in. Intuit also bundles free subscriptions to several of its other products for members.

The detail most guides omit: certification expires. Intuit requires annual recertification — a shorter exam each year — to keep your certified status and ProAdvisor rewards. Plan for it as an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time achievement, and diarise it, because letting it lapse means losing the badge you put on your profile.

The sensible sequence is: take a paid course to actually learn the software, then certify free through ProAdvisor. Paying for training and getting the credential free is the correct way round — not the other way.

What QuickBooks training costs

Less than most people expect, if you buy in the right order:

• Udemy courses: list prices are high but Udemy discounts almost constantly, and these typically sell for around $15–$20. Never pay list price — if a course isn’t discounted today, wait.
• Intuit Bookkeeping Professional Certificate: a Coursera subscription, so the cost is a function of how fast you finish rather than a fixed fee.
• ProAdvisor certification: free, including the training and the exam.
• Live instructor-led classes from third-party training companies run into the hundreds. They’re rarely worth it for QuickBooks specifically, because the software is well-covered by cheap self-paced material.

A realistic total for someone going from beginner to certified: about $20 for a course, plus time. That’s the whole budget.

What about LinkedIn Learning and live classroom training?

Two other routes come up in searches for QuickBooks training, and both are legitimate — they’re just rarely the best value. Neither is an affiliate partner of ours, so there’s nothing in it for us either way.

LinkedIn Learning has a solid QuickBooks library and is genuinely worth using if you already have a subscription, or if your employer or local library provides one — many public library systems do, which makes it effectively free. Subscribing purely for QuickBooks doesn’t make sense when a Udemy course covers the same ground for around $20 once.

Live instructor-led classes from third-party training companies typically run into the hundreds of dollars per seat. They earn their price for complex, role-specific software where you need someone to answer questions in real time. QuickBooks is not that — it is thoroughly documented, heavily covered by cheap self-paced video, and Intuit gives away the official training for free through ProAdvisor. Pay for a live class only if your employer is covering it or you know from experience that you don’t finish self-paced material.
