Instructors: the deciding factor
With either platform you are really buying access to particular people, so start with the course lists. BBC Maestro’s strongest area is writing, with courses from Lee Child, Harlan Coben, Ken Follett, Jojo Moyes, Isabel Allende, Julia Donaldson, Carol Ann Duffy and Malorie Blackman, plus an Agatha Christie writing course built with her estate. On this sample, BBC Maestro’s writing courses run longer, often six to eight hours against roughly four for comparable MasterClass writing classes. Length is not quality, but for a craft like novel-writing, more time on structure, drafting and editing is usually what buyers want. MasterClass’s advantage is range: with 35 writing instructors, it covers far more genres and forms, from poetry and journalism to screenwriting.

MasterClass sells annual memberships only. Course depth and format
BBC Maestro’s courses tend to be long for this category: typically two to eight hours, broken into 20 to 40 lessons, filmed in 4K and accompanied by a downloadable course guide. The writing courses in particular are structured more like a workshop than a talk.
MasterClass classes are highly polished and cover more ground across the catalogue, and the platform adds features such as audio-only mode and new classes every month. Some classes are deep, practical courses; others are closer to an extended conversation with a famous person. Both platforms are better for insight and inspiration than for step-by-step skill training.
