DP-203 vs DP-700: which exam should you take?

Microsoft’s data engineering certification track went through a major transition in 2024-2025. Here’s where things stand in 2026:

If you already hold DP-203 from before March 2025: it’s valid for 3 years from your exam date. You don’t need to retake DP-700 immediately, but if you’re actively interviewing in 2026, DP-700 looks more current on your resume.

If you’re starting fresh in 2026: take DP-700. It covers Microsoft Fabric (the new unified data platform that combines Synapse + Power BI + Data Factory + OneLake into one offering) which is what Microsoft is pushing employers toward.

What is DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate)?

DP-700 validates your ability to implement data engineering solutions using Microsoft Fabric — Microsoft’s unified analytics platform. It tests four core competencies:

1. Implementing and managing analytics solution components (workspaces, lakehouses, warehouses, eventhouses).
2. Ingesting and transforming data using Fabric notebooks, Data Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2.
3. Monitoring and optimizing solutions — performance tuning, troubleshooting, monitoring.
4. Implementing data security — row-level / column-level / object-level security, sensitivity labels.

Should you pursue DP-700?

Take it if:

• You’re a data engineer (or aspiring one) targeting Microsoft-shop employers — banks, government agencies, healthcare, large enterprises.
• You already use Microsoft tools (Power BI, Office 365, Active Directory) and want internal mobility into a data role.
• Your target employer mentions Synapse, Fabric, ADF, or Databricks-on-Azure in their job postings.
• You want a fast-growing market — Azure has been outpacing AWS in growth rate for several years.

Skip it if:

• You’re going to work primarily on AWS — get the AWS DEA-C01 instead.
• You have no Python/SQL background — build foundations first.
• You’re a senior engineer with strong demonstrable DE experience — the cert is associate-level and won’t move the needle for senior roles.

Exam format, cost, and logistics

Microsoft’s 1-year validity (vs AWS’s 3-year) sounds worse but the renewal is FREE — you take a 30-minute assessment on Microsoft Learn each year and your cert renews. So practically it’s lower-friction than AWS’s 3-year recertification (which requires a full re-exam).

The 4 exam domains (in detail)

Domain 1: Implement and manage analytics solution components (30-35%)

• Workspaces: Fabric workspace setup, capacity assignment, sharing, version control with Git.
• Lakehouses: creating and managing Fabric lakehouses, OneLake fundamentals, shortcuts.
• Warehouses: Fabric Data Warehouse vs Synapse dedicated SQL pools (legacy), T-SQL semantics.
• Eventhouses: KQL databases for streaming/IoT data.

Trickiest area: understanding when to use a Lakehouse vs Warehouse vs Eventhouse for a given scenario. Practice with case study questions.

Domain 2: Ingest and transform data (30-35%)

• Data Pipelines: Fabric Data Pipelines (replaces ADF in Fabric context), copy activity, mapping data flows.
• Dataflows Gen2: low-code transformations using Power Query.
• Notebooks: Spark notebooks in Fabric — Python, PySpark, Scala, R.
• Streaming ingestion: Eventstreams, real-time analytics, KQL queries.
• Medallion architecture: bronze / silver / gold layer design.

Domain 3: Monitor and optimize an analytics solution (15-20%)

• Capacity monitoring: Fabric capacity metrics app, throttling and bursting.
• Performance: partitioning, V-Order, table maintenance, query optimization.
• Troubleshooting: debugging pipeline failures, Spark job tuning.

Domain 4: Implement and manage analytics security (15-20%)

• Access control: workspace roles, item permissions, row-level security (RLS), object-level security (OLS), column-level security (CLS).
• Sensitivity labels and information protection: Microsoft Information Protection integration.
• Auditing: Fabric admin monitoring workspace.

Salary impact: what does DP-700 actually pay?

• Glassdoor (April 2026): “Azure Data Engineer” median base salary $124K (US, all levels). Microsoft-shop employers in finance and government often pay 5-10% above the AWS-equivalent.
• Levels.fyi: Azure-stack data engineers at large enterprises (banks, insurance, healthcare): $130K-$160K base entry-level / $170K-$210K base senior.
• LinkedIn (April 2026): postings explicitly mentioning “DP-700” or “Microsoft Fabric” certification add ~10% to median offer at junior-to-mid levels.

Hidden upside: Microsoft Fabric is new (launched 2023, GA 2024). Certified Fabric data engineers are in short supply. Early movers with DP-700 get a hiring premium that’ll compress as the cert becomes mainstream.

Best ways to prepare for DP-700

#1 (free, official, genuinely best): Microsoft Learn DP-700 path

Microsoft’s official learning platform has a complete DP-700 learning path, completely free. ~30-40 hours of content. The hands-on labs use real Microsoft Fabric trial environments (no Azure bills required during the trial). For DP-700 specifically, this is the consensus #1 resource.

#2 (paid alternative): A Cloud Guru / Pluralsight DP-700

$35-50/month. ~20-30 hours of focused exam prep. Newer course material; check Reddit reviews for current best instructor as the courses are still maturing.

#3 (essential): Practice tests

Microsoft Official Practice Assessment (free). MeasureUp ($99) — official Microsoft-endorsed. Whizlabs DP-700 ($14.99-24.99) for budget option.

#4 (for portfolio + hands-on depth): Udacity Data Engineering with Azure Nanodegree

If you want hands-on Databricks + Synapse experience beyond Microsoft Learn’s labs: Udacity Data Engineering with Microsoft Azure Nanodegree (nd0277) — advanced level, 56 hours.

Caveat: Udacity’s Azure variant emphasizes Synapse + Databricks, not Microsoft Fabric directly. Fabric is the next-gen unified platform replacing some of these. To bridge the gap, supplement Udacity with Microsoft Learn’s free Fabric learning path.

Offered by Microsoft + LearnQuest on Coursera ($49/month with Coursera Plus). More lecture-heavy than Udacity, less hands-on infrastructure work. Reasonable if you have Coursera Plus already.

Weeks 1-2: Foundations

• Read DP-700 official skill outline (free PDF on Microsoft Learn).
• Sign up for free Microsoft Fabric trial (no credit card required for 60-day trial as of 2026).
• Complete Microsoft Learn DP-700 learning path overview modules.

Weeks 3-6: Domains 1 + 2 (the bulk of the exam)

• Start the Udacity Data Engineering with Azure Nanodegree OR continue Microsoft Learn.
• Build hands-on projects: a Fabric lakehouse, a Synapse warehouse, a Spark notebook ETL job, an ADF pipeline.

Is DP-203 still valid in 2026?

If you earned it before March 2025, yes — valid 3 years from exam date with free annual renewal. But you can’t take DP-203 anymore; it’s retired. New candidates should take DP-700.

How hard is the DP-700 exam?

Moderate-to-hard. The Fabric platform is new and tests scenario-based decision-making (lakehouse vs warehouse vs eventhouse). 6-8 weeks of prep is typical for those with 1-2 years of data engineering experience.

How much does Azure Data Engineer certification cost?

$165 for the DP-700 exam. Total cost including prep: $165 (Microsoft Learn only) to $650 (Microsoft Learn + Udacity Nanodegree).

Is DP-700 worth it?

Yes for data engineers in or targeting Microsoft-shop roles. Adds ~10% to median offer at junior-to-mid level, plus a hiring premium because Fabric-certified engineers are still rare in 2026.

What’s the difference between DP-700 and DP-600?

DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer) focuses on data engineering — pipelines, lakehouses, transformations. DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) focuses on analytics — semantic models, Power BI, DAX. Different roles, different exams.

Should I get DP-700 or AZ-104 first?

If you’re a Data Engineer specifically, get DP-700. If you’re a generalist or sysadmin moving into Azure, AZ-104 (Azure Administrator) is a better starting point.

Can I pass DP-700 with no Azure experience?

Difficult — expect 16-20 weeks of full-time prep instead of 6-10. Microsoft recommends 1+ years of Microsoft Fabric or Azure data services experience.

Does the Udacity Data Engineering with Azure Nanodegree cover DP-700?

Roughly equivalent in scope and difficulty. AWS DEA-C01 is more focused on classic services (Redshift, EMR, Glue); DP-700 is more focused on the unified Fabric platform.
