Quick verdict
Start free. SideFX’s own Houdini Foundations lessons plus the free Houdini Apprentice license teach you on current software (Houdini 22) at no cost. When you want one structured paid course, Raffi Bedross’s Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp on Udemy is the most-reviewed option. When you are building a studio reel, pay for a mentored program such as Rebelway, CGMA or CG Spectrum.
- Best free start: SideFX Learning Library + Houdini Apprentice (free, non-commercial)
- Best structured paid course: Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp (Udemy, 4.3 from 4,955 ratings)
- Best-rated FX rigs course: Master Houdini FX by Eric Ebling (Udemy, 4.7 from 643 ratings, updated August 2025)
- Best for game artists: Houdini Procedural House with Unreal Engine 5 (Udemy, 4.8 from 129 ratings)
- Best subscription: Houdini.School ($29 a month on-demand, $49 with live classes)
- Best simulation library: Applied Houdini by Steven Knipping (Volumes I is free)
- Best mentored programs: Rebelway Houdini Fundamentals ($749, 12 weeks), CGMA’s 8-week Houdini courses, CG Spectrum FX Principles
Houdini is the VFX industry’s procedural powerhouse — the software behind film destruction sequences, simulations, and increasingly game-dev tooling — and it has the steepest learning curve in 3D. The good news: its training economy is unusually generous at the bottom and unusually professional at the top. This guide maps the best Houdini courses in 2026.
The short version: start with SideFX’s own free tutorials (the developer’s learning library is genuinely excellent, and Houdini Apprentice is a free full-featured license). Add Udemy’s project courses for structured cheap practice, and graduate to the professional VFX schools (Rebelway, CGMA — unaffiliated) when you’re preparing a studio-grade reel.
Houdini is now on version 22 (SideFX’s documentation reads “Houdini 22.0”), so we flag each paid course’s last-updated date below. Node-based fundamentals carry across versions well; interface details and some solvers do not.

1. SideFX’s free learning library + Houdini Apprentice
SideFX — Houdini’s developer — maintains free structured tutorials from first-launch through simulations, and gives away Houdini Apprentice, a free license for learning. That combination makes the $0 starting path the correct one for everybody: you learn on current software from the people who build it. Unmonetized for us; merit pick, no contest.
Start with the Houdini Foundations learning path on SideFX’s “Start Here” page. Its lessons take you through Houdini’s node-based procedural workflow by building small projects from scratch, and each lesson comes as a video and a downloadable PDF. After that, the Learning Library holds more than 150 pages of tutorials you can filter by Houdini version (H22 back to older releases), by level and by industry (film, games, motion graphics). Filter to the current version where you can: the node graph has been stable for years, but tool names and the Solaris and Copernicus contexts have changed recently.
Apprentice has real limits, and you should know them before you start a portfolio piece. It is licensed for non-commercial use only, renders are capped at 1920×1080 and carry a watermark, and its files use a non-commercial format. That is fine for learning. If you plan to sell work, the $299-a-year Houdini Indie license is the next step (see the license section below).

2. Udemy’s Houdini project courses — structured practice
Udemy’s Houdini catalog is the affordable middle layer: project-based courses (destruction FX, particle systems, procedural environments) that convert SideFX’s fundamentals into finished pieces. Udemy runs sales most weeks, so a course listed at full price usually sells for far less; check the price on the course page rather than trusting a number in any article, including this one. We checked every course below on Udemy on 24 October 2026.
| Course | Instructor | Rating | Video | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp | Raffi Bedross | 4.3 (4,955 ratings, 24,215 students) | 18 hours | November 2024 |
| Master Houdini FX: Create Stunning Visual Effects Rigs | Eric Ebling | 4.7 (643 ratings, 5,270 students) | 18.5 hours | August 2025 |
| Houdini Procedural House with Unreal Engine 5 | Jingtian Li | 4.8 (129 ratings) | 24 hours | March 2024 |
| From Zero to Houdini: Beginner’s Guide to Procedural 3D | Roland Hartmann | 4.9 (51 ratings) | 12 hours | December 2025 |
Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp is the default pick for a beginner who wants one course. With nearly 5,000 ratings it has by far the largest sample in the category, and it builds a full CG product commercial (a chocolate pour) so you finish with a portfolio-style shot rather than a pile of exercises. It was last updated in November 2024, two major versions back. Every node it teaches still exists, but expect some menus to look different.
Master Houdini FX by Eric Ebling is the better second course. It is rated 4.7 from 643 ratings and focuses on building reusable FX rigs, the skill studios actually hire for. Take it after the basics, not instead of them.
Check the Master Houdini FX price
Houdini Procedural House with Unreal Engine 5 by Jingtian Li is the pick for game artists. Over 24 hours you build a procedural house tool in Houdini and use it in Unreal Engine 5, which is the Houdini-to-engine pipeline game studios list in job ads. Its 4.8 rating comes from 129 reviews.
See the Houdini + Unreal Engine 5 course
From Zero to Houdini by Roland Hartmann is the most recently updated beginner course here (December 2025). Its 4.9 rating is promising but comes from only 51 ratings, so treat it as a strong newcomer rather than a proven pick.

3. The professional tier — Rebelway, CGMA, and studio-prep programs
For working toward VFX studio employment, the mentored online schools (Rebelway’s FX programs, CGMA’s courses — both unaffiliated with us) are where reels get built: cohort deadlines, industry instructors, and portfolio pieces judged by studio standards. They price in the hundreds to thousands — appropriate for career preparation, unnecessary for exploration. The honest sequence: free tier → cheap projects → professional program only once Houdini has survived contact with your patience.
- Rebelway Houdini Fundamentals: 35+ hours of training over 12 weeks, with a certificate. It costs $749 up front or three payments of $250, and the next cohort starts on 6 November 2026. Rebelway recommends it for beginners and its Introduction to Houdini for FX for people who already know the software. Learners on r/Houdini praise the VEX and water courses, and some warn that quality varies by instructor and that support can be thin, so read the specific course’s reviews before you pay.
- CGMA (CG Master Academy): six Houdini/FX courses, each 8 weeks and instructor-led: Fundamentals of Houdini for 3D Artists, Intro to FX Using Houdini, Pyro FX Using Houdini and Abstract FX in Houdini among them. Most are marked intermediate, so arrive knowing the interface.
- CG Spectrum Effects (FX) Principles: CG Spectrum calls itself a Houdini Certified School. The course trains explosions, destruction and water simulation in Houdini, and offers a 9-month one-to-one mentorship option with monthly intakes. Tuition is quoted on request, so compare the total cost against Rebelway and CGMA before you commit.
4. Houdini.School — the best subscription
Houdini.School gathers courses from working artists in one membership. The Basic plan is $29 a month for 25+ on-demand courses; Premium is $49 a month for 30+ courses including the live classes, and it makes you eligible for SideFX’s $95 Houdini Education license. Both cancel any time. It suits a learner who wants variety and live Q&A without committing $749 to one cohort.
5. Applied Houdini by Steven Knipping — the simulation library
Steven Knipping’s Applied Houdini is the series r/Houdini members name most often for intermediate simulation work. It covers rigid-body destruction, particles, volumes and liquids in separate series, sold individually or as bundles, and Volumes I – Fundamentals is free. Take it after Foundations, when you are ready to start blowing things up.
6. Hipflask — geometry fundamentals done properly
Hipflask teaches Houdini’s geometry layer in short, searchable courses (components and primitive types, groups, scattering) priced from $59.99 to $99.99, and it opens with 5 hours of free training. Its approach suits people who want to understand why a setup works, which is what stops you copying tutorials forever.
7. Houdini-Course.com (Christian Bohm) — one long beginner curriculum
Christian Bohm’s Learn Houdini FX from Scratch is a structured platform with 650+ video lessons and 100+ hours of content, homework, quizzes and a Discord community. It costs $45 a month, $220 for six months, or less per month on a 12-month prepay. Bohm promotes it himself on r/Houdini, so weigh the community praise accordingly, but the ordered, beginner-first structure is real.
Is Houdini worth the learning curve? (who should and shouldn’t)
Learn Houdini if you’re targeting FX/simulation roles in film or games (it’s the industry standard and scarce skills price accordingly), you’re a technical artist drawn to proceduralism, or you’re a games developer wanting the increasingly-common Houdini-to-engine pipeline skills. Start elsewhere if you’re new to 3D generally — Blender’s gentler curve teaches transferable fundamentals first (and its free ecosystem is deep), with our game development guide covering the adjacent engine skills. Houdini rewards a foundation; it punishes being anyone’s first 3D package.
Motion designers are the third group worth naming. Houdini’s procedural approach is popular for abstract and generative work, and free channels such as Entagma are built for that audience. If you come from TouchDesigner or Cinema 4D, the node-based thinking will feel familiar sooner than it does for a Maya or Blender modeler.
The reel is the credential (what studios actually screen)
VFX hiring runs on demo reels, and Houdini reels have known conventions worth learning early: 30–60 seconds, best work first (recruiters decide in the first ten); breakdowns included (wireframe and node-graph passes showing the work was yours); one discipline done deeply (a focused destruction or FX reel beats a scattered everything-reel); and current-version work (dated UI in breakdowns reads as dated skills). The professional programs’ real product is reel supervision toward exactly these conventions — which is also why they’re worth their price only at that career stage.
Course certificates do not replace a reel. A Udemy certificate of completion proves you finished a video course; Rebelway’s and CGMA’s certificates carry more weight in the industry, but a recruiter will still open the reel first.

Houdini licenses: Apprentice vs Indie vs Education vs FX
Is Houdini free? For learning, yes. SideFX’s Apprentice license costs nothing and includes the full feature set; what it restricts is use, not tools. You pay when you want to sell work, render above 1080p without a watermark, or use Houdini Engine in a commercial pipeline.
| License | Price (SideFX, 24 Oct 2026) | Commercial use | Render limit | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Houdini Apprentice | Free | No | 1920×1080, watermarked | Learning |
| Houdini Education | $95 a year | No | Unlimited | Students and teachers (status checked) |
| Houdini Indie | $299 a year or $449 for 2 years | Limited (revenue under $100K) | Unlimited | Freelancers and small studios |
| Houdini Core | $1,995 perpetual; $1,475 a year rental | Yes | Unlimited | Modeling, lookdev and layout, no simulation |
| Houdini FX | $4,495 perpetual; $3,505 a year rental | Yes | Unlimited | The full toolset including simulation |
Houdini Indie vs Houdini FX is the comparison most learners actually face. Indie gives you Houdini FX’s animation and VFX tools under a limited commercial license for artists and studios earning under $100,000 a year, and SideFX allows up to three Indie licenses per facility. Houdini FX is the studio license. Houdini Core drops the simulation tools, so it is the wrong license for an FX learner. If you are enrolled in school, the $95 Education license is the cheapest way to remove Apprentice’s render limits.
Free Houdini tutorials for beginners
Houdini’s free ecosystem is deep enough that you can reach intermediate level without paying. The resources r/Houdini members recommend again and again:
- SideFX Houdini Foundations and the Learning Library — the official path, filterable by version and level.
- Hipflask’s free 5 hours — the opening lessons of a paid geometry curriculum, free to start.
- Applied Houdini Volumes I — a free first look at Steven Knipping’s simulation teaching.
- CGWiki (tokeru.com) — Matt Estela’s long-running wiki of Houdini tips, VEX snippets and explanations. It is the reference most forum answers link to.
- Entagma — free tutorials on procedural design, aimed at motion designers.
- Junichiro Horikawa — in-depth YouTube streams, good for people with a programming background.
- The Houdini Help docs — dry, but the most-upvoted answer in one r/Houdini thread on learning fast was simply “Houdini Help Docs”.
The limitation of free tutorials is order. Each one teaches a technique, and nobody tells you what to learn next. That is the thing the paid courses above sell.
A Houdini learning path (in the order that works)
The most common mistake is starting with simulation because that is what the showreels show. Experienced users on r/Houdini give the same order again and again:
- Interface and procedural modeling (weeks 1–4): SideFX Foundations, then Hipflask or From Zero to Houdini. Learn how data flows through a node network.
- Attributes and VEX (weeks 4–8): points, primitives and attributes, then simple VEX in wrangles. CGWiki is the companion reference here.
- Build small parametric tools (weeks 8–10): turn a model into a digital asset with controls. This is where Houdini starts paying back.
- Basic rendering in Solaris and Karma (weeks 10–12): light and render what you have built, because a reel needs finished frames.
- Simulation (month 3 onward): rigid bodies, then Vellum cloth, then pyro and liquids. Applied Houdini, Master Houdini FX or the Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp fit here.
- Specialize (month 6 onward): pick one discipline for the reel, and only now consider a mentored program.
Start with From Zero to Houdini
Pick a personal project early and learn what that project needs. Several r/Houdini veterans make the same point: tutorials followed for their own sake do not stick, while a shot you care about forces you to solve real problems.
How we picked
We loaded every course and license page on this list on 24 October 2026 and recorded the provider’s own price, rating, rating count and last-updated date. We read five r/Houdini threads on learning Houdini and choosing courses to see which resources practitioners recommend and which complaints recur. Courses were ranked on currency, rating weighted by the number of reviews, and fit to a reader goal. Only the Udemy picks earn us a commission; SideFX, Houdini.School, Applied Houdini, Hipflask, Houdini-Course.com, Rebelway, CGMA and CG Spectrum earn us nothing.
FAQs
What is the best Houdini course?
SideFX’s own free learning library plus the free Houdini Apprentice license is the correct start: official, current, and $0. Udemy project courses such as the Complete Houdini FX Bootcamp add cheap structured practice; Rebelway, CGMA and CG Spectrum serve studio-bound reel preparation.
Is Houdini free to learn?
Yes. Houdini Apprentice is a free full-featured learning license from SideFX, and the developer’s own tutorial library is free and excellent. Apprentice is non-commercial and watermarks renders above 1920×1080. Cost only enters at the professional-training tier or when you need a commercial license.
How long does it take to learn Houdini?
Expect 3-6 months to basic procedural competence with prior 3D experience, and 1-2 years to studio-grade FX work. It’s the deepest learning curve in mainstream 3D, and the scarcity that creates is exactly why it pays.
How much does Houdini cost?
Apprentice is free. Houdini Education is $95 a year, Houdini Indie is $299 a year (or $449 for two years) for artists earning under $100,000, and Houdini FX costs $4,495 perpetual or $3,505 a year to rent, per SideFX on 24 October 2026.
What’s the difference between Houdini Indie and Houdini FX?
Indie gives you Houdini FX’s animation and VFX tools under a limited commercial license for individuals and studios with revenue under $100,000, capped at three licenses per facility. Houdini FX is the full studio license with no revenue cap.
What is the current version of Houdini?
Houdini 22. SideFX’s documentation reads Houdini 22.0, and its learning library already tags tutorials as H22. Older courses still teach valid fundamentals, but check last-updated dates for interface details.
Should I learn Blender before Houdini?
If you are new to 3D, yes. Blender’s gentler curve teaches modeling, lighting and rendering fundamentals that transfer. If you already know another 3D package or come from node-based tools such as TouchDesigner, you can start Houdini directly.
Are Houdini course certificates worth anything?
Rebelway’s and CGMA’s certificates carry some weight in the VFX industry, and a Udemy certificate of completion shows you finished a course. Studios hire from demo reels, though, so treat any certificate as a bonus and put your effort into the reel.
