When I re-verified this page in June 2026, eight of the eleven courses the old version recommended failed the check: one had been deleted outright, two hadn’t been updated since 2017 and 2020, and one had been renamed into a different subject entirely. Several are still being recommended on competing lists right now.

Forensics is evidence work: a course teaching 2017-era acquisition tools and Windows 7 artifacts isn’t just dated, it teaches workflows that won’t hold up. So the bar for this page is strict: live listing, verified in September 2026; meaningful content update within roughly the last year; and a real scope match to digital forensics rather than general security. 1. Computer Forensics Specialization (Infosec, Coursera): best structured course
Infosec is a security-training company whose day job is preparing working professionals, and its Coursera specialization (4.7★ from 364 reviews, 12,922 enrolled) is the most complete structured treatment of digital forensics you can take online without a five-figure training budget: forensic process and chain of custody, then deep work in Windows registry forensics, file-system artifacts, and practical examination technique.
Start with the first course, Digital Forensics Concepts, which you can audit free, and it’s a fair sample of the whole program’s style before you commit to the certificate track.
The honest catch: its review base is smaller than the big Coursera specializations (hundreds of ratings, not tens of thousands), because forensics is a niche. And it’s Windows-centric; you’ll want supplementary material for mobile and macOS work.

2. Digital Forensics for Pentesters (Udemy): best hands-on labs
This is the practical counterweight: 4.7★ across 535 ratings and 50,274 students and, rare for this topic, updated in July 2026. You build a forensics lab and work the tools investigators actually run: disk imaging, artifact recovery, memory analysis, and casework on realistic evidence, with a pentester’s eye for how attackers leave traces.
The honest catch: it assumes basic comfort with virtual machines and the command line. Total beginners should do the Infosec concepts course first, then come here for the lab hours.
3. Digital Forensics and Cyber-Crime Investigation (Udemy): the casework angle
A smaller course (4.4★ from 344 ratings, 2,712 students, last updated July 2025 and so the oldest of the three) focused on the investigation side: how digital evidence fits into cyber-crime cases, from acquisition through reporting. It’s the right supplement if your interest leans law-enforcement or corporate-investigations rather than incident response.
The honest catch: it’s a complement, not a foundation. At its size and scope, take it alongside one of the two picks above, not instead of them.

What the other lists still recommend, and what happened when we checked
The June rebuild of this page cut eight of eleven courses. That is not a one-off, it is the normal condition of forensics course lists, and you can verify it yourself in about ten minutes. In September 2026 we ran the same check against the highest-ranking independent list competing with this page, Comparitech’s “6 Best online digital forensics courses.” Here is what its six recommendations look like today.
- The Cybrary pick no longer leads to a forensics course. Its Computer Hacking Forensics Analyst link still returns HTTP 200, but it now lands on Cybrary’s Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking course, a different subject.
- The ISFCE link returns 404. The credential itself is fine: ISFCE rebuilt its website and still offers the CCE. The link rotted, not the certification, and that distinction matters if you were about to write the cert off.
- The Udemy course it links was last updated in July 2020. It carries more than 22,000 ratings, which is exactly what makes a six-year-old course look authoritative in a comparison table.
- Two of the six are not forensics courses. StationX’s Complete Cyber Security Course and edX’s RITx Cybersecurity MicroMasters are general security programs that contain some forensics material.
- The GCFE entry is accurate and current. That is one of six.
None of this means the list was careless when it was written. It describes a failure mode worth understanding before you trust any course roundup, this one included: a dead or repurposed listing almost always answers HTTP 200, so nothing looks broken from the outside, and a course’s rating count keeps climbing for years after its content stops being updated. Those two facts together are why stale picks survive in roundups indefinitely. It is also why the picks above carry a verification month rather than a vague “updated for 2026” badge, and why the single most useful thing you can do before paying for any course is check its own last-updated date on the platform.
The four branches of digital forensics (and which courses cover them)
“Digital forensics” is an umbrella over four working specialties, and knowing which one you’re aiming at changes what you should study. Computer forensics, meaning disk, file-system, and operating-system artifacts, is the foundation and the bulk of what the Infosec specialization teaches; nearly every examiner starts here. Mobile forensics extracts evidence from phones and tablets, where lock states, cloud sync, and app sandboxing make acquisition its own discipline; expect to learn it on the job or through vendor training, because consumer courses cover it thinly. Network forensics reconstructs what crossed the wire from packet captures and logs, and it overlaps heavily with SOC and incident-response work, which is where the Pentesters course’s attacker-perspective labs earn their keep. Memory forensics analyzes RAM captures for what was running at seizure time, and it is the fastest-growing branch, since modern malware often never touches disk.

Course vs certification vs degree: how to spend your money
Three price tiers, three different jobs. Courses (this page: free to low hundreds) build actual skill. They’re where everyone should start, and for moving from an adjacent IT role into junior DFIR work, often all you need to buy. Certifications (high hundreds to several thousand per attempt) are hiring filters: they don’t teach much by themselves, but GCFE or CHFI on a resume gets past screeners who can’t evaluate skill directly. Buy them when a specific job path demands them, ideally on an employer’s budget. Degrees in digital forensics or cybersecurity matter mainly for law-enforcement and government roles where HR rules require them; for private-sector DFIR, demonstrated casework and a GIAC cert routinely outweigh a forensics-specific degree.
The wrong order, certification first and skills later, is the expensive one. Exam attempts assume working tool fluency, and failed attempts refund nothing.
Digital forensics certifications: the honest landscape
A large share of the people landing on this page are really shopping for a certification, so here’s the map, with no affiliate stake on our side in any of it. GIAC’s GCFE and GCFA (Windows forensics and advanced/incident forensics respectively, taught through SANS) are the credentials hiring managers in DFIR respect most, and among the most expensive in all of IT training, realistically employer-funded. EC-Council’s CHFI is broader and more accessible, common in law-enforcement-adjacent job listings. IACIS’s CFCE carries weight specifically in law enforcement, where it originated. One warning from our September 2026 verification: prep courses for the lesser-known CDFE credential are disappearing. The one this page used to recommend has been deleted, so treat that cert with caution.

Two things in that table are worth acting on. The GIAC exams are proctored and publish a minimum score, which is why skimming the objectives is not a strategy for them. And the CFCE is structurally unlike the others: it is not a single sitting but a supervised peer-review phase followed by a practical problem on a real disk image and a written test, with 80% required on both. That is a months-long commitment, and it is a large part of why the credential carries the weight it does in law enforcement. Is there an “AI digital forensics” certification yet?
People are searching for one, so here is the direct answer: no major certifying body offers an AI-specific digital forensics credential as of September 2026. The training has started to appear. The certification has not.
What actually exists, checked at each provider this month: SANS runs FOR563: Applied AI for Digital Forensics and Incident Response, a one-day course on using local large language models in DFIR work. It is a course, and no GIAC exam is attached to it. GIAC’s own artificial intelligence focus area lists general AI credentials such as GMLE and GAIPS rather than anything forensics-specific. Beyond those, several commercial training vendors sell certificates with names like “Certified AI Forensics and Incident Response Specialist.” Those are vendor-issued, and they do not carry the hiring recognition that GIAC, EC-Council or IACIS credentials do. Treat them as you would any unaccredited certificate: possibly useful as training, not as a hiring signal.
The practical position for now is that AI shows up in forensics as tooling rather than as a separate discipline you certify in. Evidence handling, artifact analysis and chain of custody are still what the job tests, and they are what the courses above teach. If the AI angle is what draws you, take a mainstream forensics course first and add applied-AI material once the fundamentals are in place. The reverse order does not work, because pointing a language model at evidence you cannot independently verify is how you produce a report that falls apart the moment somebody checks it.
The tools you’ll actually be tested on
Job listings name tools, so it’s worth knowing the landscape before you pick a course. Autopsy is the open-source workhorse: free, genuinely capable, and the platform most courses (including both Udemy picks above) use for labs; competence in it transfers everywhere. FTK and EnCase are the commercial suites that dominate law-enforcement and large-enterprise labs; you’ll rarely get hands-on access before employment, which is fine, because their workflows mirror what you learn in Autopsy. Volatility is the standard for memory analysis and the tool that separates intermediate examiners from beginners; the Pentesters course introduces it. Cellebrite and similar mobile-extraction platforms are licensed at prices only agencies pay, which is exactly why mobile forensics is learned on the job.

Can you learn digital forensics for free?
