Quick verdict
3.5 / 5. Worth it at the promotional price, if you manage the renewal. On 22 October 2026 Craftsy was selling a full first year of its 2,000+ class library to new members for $1.79. For quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet and cake decorating, that is hard to beat.
The catch: the membership renews automatically at the regular price, which Craftsy lists as $125. Most bad reviews are about that renewal. Members report being charged before the date they expected, or after they thought they had turned renewal off.
Our advice: join on the promo, then turn off auto-renewal the same day and check your account shows it off. You keep access for the full year.
Craftsy is a subscription video library for crafts and home skills: quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet, baking, cake decorating, painting, woodworking and more. This review covers what you get, what it really costs after the first year, how cancellation and refunds work, what members say, and which alternative to pick if Craftsy is not right for you.

Craftsy works like a streaming service for hobby skills. A paid membership opens long-form classes taught by named instructors, shorter videos, live events, downloadable patterns and recipes, and a shop that sells supplies, kits and DVDs that tie into the classes.
Its history explains why some people are wary of it. The business behind Craftsy, Sympoz, was founded in April 2010 by former eBay executives, and Craftsy launched in 2011. NBCUniversal bought it in 2017 and relaunched it as Bluprint in 2018, broadening it into lifestyle topics. Bluprint announced in May 2020 that it would close. TN Marketing bought its assets that July and relaunched the site as Craftsy in September 2020. The Craftsy you join today is run by TN Marketing; its terms of service sit on a TN Marketing policy site.
So Craftsy is not a newcomer or a fly-by-night site. But the version people remember from the early 2010s, with individual classes bought one at a time, is not the version selling memberships today.
Course Selection and Variety on Craftsy
Craftsy advertises 2,000+ classes and instructional videos across more than 20 categories. Its class menu lists 21:
| Needle and fiber | Food | Art and making | Home and wellbeing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quilting | Baking | Drawing | Home decor |
| Sewing | Cake decorating | Painting | Gardening |
| Knitting | Cooking | Photography | Fitness |
| Crochet | Paper crafts | Yoga | |
| Embroidery | Jewelry making | Fun for kids | |
| Weaving & spinning | Woodworking | Writing |
The depth is uneven, and that matters more than the headline number. Quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet and cake decorating are where Craftsy is strongest. Its most-popular list on 22 October was mostly quilting, knitting and garment classes, with titles such as “Advanced Cable Knitting” and “Sew Skirts Without a Pattern.” Fitness, yoga and writing are thinner, and you can find comparable free material elsewhere.
Classes are project-led. A typical sewing or knitting class teaches technique through one or more finished items, with a pattern you can download. Long-time members on Trustpilot say this is what keeps them subscribed: they come back for a specific technique, and the library usually has a class on it.
Outside the classes, members get Craftsy Live events and tutorials, CraftsyTV and a library of patterns and recipes. Paying members can browse, download and print patterns under the Resources tab. Classes bought individually in the past stay available in your account while a membership is paused, according to Craftsystay in your account even if your membership lapses or is paused.rsquo;s FAQ.
Pricing and Subscription Model
Craftsy has three levels of access, plus the shop:
| Level | Price (22 Oct 2026) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free account | Free | Free videos and articles, class previews |
| Premium membership, new-member offer | $1.79 for the first year | All 2,000+ classes and videos, live events, patterns, app downloads |
| Premium membership, regular | $125 a year (Craftsy’s stated regular price); monthly billing also offered | Same access |
| GOLD membership | Price shown at checkout | Premium access plus GOLD classes and patterns you choose and keep |
The $1.79 first-year offer is for new members only and has run for long stretches, but Craftsy can change or end it at any time. At the regular price, the comparison changes. $125 a year is in line with other craft subscriptions, and Domestika, which sells courses individually, can work out cheaper if you only want two or three classes.
Renewal rules (from Craftsy’s FAQ)
Annual memberships renew automatically “at our then-current rates,” using the card on file. Annual members get an email before renewal; monthly members get no notice.
Cancel within 30 days of an annual charge for a full refund; after 30 days Craftsy says it refunds on a prorated basis. Monthly memberships are not refunded. Charges appear on your statement as PP *craftsy.
Two more features matter for value. Membership Sharing lets a paying member share access with up to three family members or friends. And you can pause a membership for three months, which suspends billing and access; it reactivates automatically after three months.
User Experience and Platform Accessibility
The website is organized by category, with search and filters, and class pages show the instructor, lessons and materials. Members on Trustpilot mostly describe it as easy to use, and some wish favorites and specific techniques were easier to find.
Craftsy has free apps for iOS and Android. A membership bought on the website works in the app, and the app adds a favorites list and a download feature for offline viewing. You can also stream to a TV. Customer service is by phone Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Central, and by email only on Fridays.
Real User Reviews and Feedback
Craftsy’s Trustpilot profile showed 3.8 out of 5 from 422 reviews on 22 October 2026, with 43 in the past year. Trustpilot noted that Craftsy had not invited reviewers recently. We read the 44 most recent reviews, and they split sharply:
- About content, almost all positive. Long-time members, some since 2010, praise the instructors, the quilting and knitting depth, and the ability to watch on a computer, TV or phone.
- About billing, almost all negative. The one-star reviews describe annual renewals charged before the expected date, charges after auto-renewal was turned off, a GOLD “trial” that led to a much larger charge, and $1.79-style offers signed up through app “offer walls” that did not deliver promised rewards.
- Refunds do happen. Several reviewers, including people who forgot to cancel after a promo year, say Craftsy refunded them quickly after an email.
The same pattern appears on Reddit. In a widely shared r/crochet thread titled “Warning to anyone who took that Craftsy membership for a year for like $2 deal,” the poster got a renewal reminder for $113. Replies reported renewals charged about 10 days before the anniversary, and one person said they were charged after canceling. Those posts are about three years old, and one quoted a 2023 email saying Craftsy would stop refunding partial terms. Craftsy’s FAQ today says it refunds annual memberships in full within 30 days and pro rata after that. Rely on the current FAQ, and keep the cancellation email.
Pros and Cons: A Balanced Viewpoint
Pros:
- Depth in traditional crafts. Quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet and cake decorating are covered by long, project-based classes from established instructors.
- Exceptional first-year price. $1.79 for a full year of the library (new members, 22 October 2026).
- Patterns and live events included with membership, plus offline downloads in the app.
- Sharing and pausing. Share with up to three people; pause billing for three months.
- A published refund policy for annual plans: full within 30 days, prorated after.
Cons:
- The renewal is where the cost is. $125 a year at the regular price, renewing automatically.
- Billing complaints are common. Early renewals and unexpected charges dominate one-star reviews.
- Canceling auto-renewal can take an email or phone call, although Craftsy says you can also do it in your account.
- Thin outside crafts. Fitness, yoga and writing classes are not why you join.
- Materials cost extra. As with any craft class, you buy your own supplies; Craftsy’s shop sells kits.
Is Craftsy Worth the Investment?
At $1.79 for the first year: yes, for almost anyone interested in quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet or cake decorating, as long as you switch off auto-renewal straight away.
At $125 a year: it depends. It is worth it if you work on several projects a year in Craftsy’s strongest categories and use the patterns. It is not worth it if you watch one class and stop, if your craft is outside its core, or if your library offers a similar service free. Many US libraries license Creativebug, another craft video service, for card holders.
Our rating reflects that split:
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class depth in core crafts | 30% | 4.0 | Long, project-based classes from named instructors in quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet, cakes |
| Price and value | 25% | 4.0 | $1.79 first year is exceptional; $125 renewal is fair but not cheap |
| Billing transparency | 20% | 2.5 | Auto-renewal at full price; frequent reports of early or unexpected charges |
| Platform and apps | 15% | 3.5 | Easy to use, offline downloads; search for specific techniques could be better |
| Reputation and support | 10% | 3.5 | Trustpilot 3.8 from 422; refunds usually granted on request |
Weighted total: 3.6, which we round to the nearest half point: 3.5 out of 5.
How Craftsy Compares to the Alternatives
| Craftsy | Domestika | Skillshare | Creativebug | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Traditional crafts: quilting, sewing, knitting, cakes | Art, illustration, design | Casual creative topics | Crafts via library access |
| How you pay | Membership ($1.79 first year, $125 regular) | Buy courses individually; sales are frequent | Annual membership | Subscription or free via many libraries |
| Strength | Depth in fiber crafts and cake decorating | Production quality, broad art catalog | Huge catalog | Free if your library has it |
| Weakness | Billing complaints | Less on quilting and sewing | Variable quality | Smaller catalog |
Domestika is the closest serious alternative for creative learning: higher production values, a broader art and design catalog, and courses you buy and keep, though it has less depth in quilting and sewing. Skillshare covers similar hobbies more casually. For cooking and baking, MasterClass ($120 a year for Standard) and King Arthur Baking School are alternatives; see our best online baking classes.
We compare the whole field in our creative learning platform comparison and our best online learning platforms guide. For transparency: Craftsy runs no affiliate program we participate in, so this review earns us nothing from Craftsy. Domestika is an affiliate partner, which is disclosed on the button below and does not change the verdict.

How to cancel Craftsy and get a refund
These are Craftsy’s own instructions from its FAQ, read on 22 October 2026:
- Turn off auto-renewal in your account online, or email craftsy@program-director.net, or call 1-888-891-7203. You keep access for the rest of the term you paid for.
- Ask for a refund on an annual membership by email or phone. Within the first 30 days Craftsy says it refunds 100%; after that, a prorated amount.
- Monthly memberships are not refunded; cancel before the next billing date.
- Keep proof. Save the confirmation email or note the date and name of the agent. Members who disputed charges successfully on Trustpilot and Reddit usually had a record of canceling.
If you joined on the $1.79 offer and do not want to pay $125 next year, cancel auto-renewal on the day you join. Several Reddit users recommend this, and it does not shorten your year.
Craftsy Premium vs GOLD: what is the difference?
Premium is the standard membership: access to the full class and video library, live events and patterns while you are a member. GOLD adds a set of benefits you choose from your account dashboard, mainly GOLD classes and patterns that you keep. Craftsy’s FAQ says GOLD selections cannot be undone or swapped once confirmed, and new benefits are added through the year.
Be careful with GOLD upgrade offers. Several one-star Trustpilot reviews in late 2025 describe a low-price GOLD “trial” email followed by a much larger renewal charge. If you upgrade, read the renewal price on the checkout page and note the renewal date.
Free and cheaper ways to learn the same crafts
If the $125 renewal is more than you want to pay, these are the realistic alternatives:
- Your public library. Many US libraries license Creativebug, a craft video service, for card holders; Reddit users in the r/crochet thread recommended checking before paying for any craft subscription.
- Craftsy’s own free tier. A free account still gives you Craftsy’s free videos, articles and class previews, which is enough to test an instructor’s teaching style.
- Pause instead of quitting. If you only craft in winter, Craftsy lets you pause billing for three months rather than paying through the months you do not use it.
- Buy single courses elsewhere. If you want two or three specific classes a year, buying them individually on Domestika or Udemy, often during sales, can cost less than a year of Craftsy at the regular price.
- Free video and pattern sites. For basic stitches and techniques, free tutorials and pattern databases cover the fundamentals; Craftsy’s advantage is long, structured project classes from one instructor.
The honest test after your promotional year: count how many classes you finished. If it is fewer than three, one of the options above is probably the better buy.
Is Craftsy legit?
Yes. Craftsy is a real, long-running business, now owned by TN Marketing, with named instructors, a published refund policy, phone support and more than 400 Trustpilot reviews averaging 3.8. The “scam” searches come from billing: very cheap first-year offers that renew at full price, and reports of renewals charged early. The service itself is genuine; the protection is to manage the renewal yourself.
Conclusion: Final Thoughts on Craftsy
Craftsy is the best-value way into traditional crafts online while its $1.79 first-year offer runs. You get two thousand classes, patterns and live events for less than a coffee. It is worth it at that price for quilters, sewists, knitters, crocheters and cake decorators. At the $125 renewal it is a closer call, and the billing complaints are real. Join on the promo, switch off auto-renewal on day one, and decide at the end of the year whether you have used it enough to pay full price.
