Mondly and Rosetta Stone get compared because both promise to get you speaking with an app, but they go about it in opposite ways. Mondly is a quick, gamified phrase course that translates into your own language. Rosetta Stone uses an immersion method it has refined for decades and never translates at all. We read both companies’ price pages, plan pages, terms and help pages on 14 October 2026, and went through the most recent Trustpilot reviews and Reddit threads for each, so the comparison below reflects what you would actually buy today.

The real difference: explanations vs immersion
Everything else follows from this. Mondly translates. A lesson shows you a phrase in your target language with the meaning in your own, drills it with matching, listening, spelling and speaking exercises, and brings it back later through spaced repetition. Premium adds grammar guides and conjugation tables, so when you want to know why a verb changes, the answer is there. Older reviews (including the 2022 version of this page) said Mondly had no grammar support; that is no longer true.
Rosetta Stone never translates. Its Dynamic Immersion method pairs words and sentences with pictures and native audio and expects you to work out the meaning, the way a child picks up a first language. Rosetta Stone says this means “no translations or rote memorization needed.” People who like puzzles find it absorbing. People who want the rule spelled out find it slow: the most common complaint in recent one- and two-star reviews is that it teaches nothing about grammar but expects you to use it anyway.
A quick test: if you have ever looked at a sentence in another language and wanted the grammar table immediately, Rosetta Stone will frustrate you. If you enjoy guessing and being corrected, its method suits you better than Mondly’s.
Price: what each costs in October 2026
Mondly’s pricing changes with its offers. On 14 October 2026 its sale page (mondly.com/offer) showed a countdown timer and three Premium plans, all covering every language:

Rosetta Stone’s price page is simpler: $19.99 a month, or $159 a year ($13.25 a month), and both include all 25 languages. When we checked on 27 September for our full Rosetta Stone review, partner offers on Rosetta Stone’s own site were lower, down to $119 a year, so it is worth looking for one before paying list price.

Watch the renewal. Rosetta Stone’s terms say subscriptions renew automatically at its then-current fees and that discounts on your first term do not apply to renewals. Mondly’s sale prices are labeled as limited-time offers. In both cases, put a reminder in your calendar a week before the renewal date and decide then.
Languages: 41 against 25
Mondly teaches more languages, and it teaches them from more starting points: you can learn Spanish from Norwegian, for example, which Mondly counts as more than 1,000 language combinations. Rosetta Stone teaches 25 languages and includes all of them in every subscription.
Both teach: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Persian (Farsi), Hindi, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino (Tagalog), Latin and English (American and British).
Only Mondly: Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Catalan, Afrikaans, Thai, Indonesian, Bengali, Urdu, plus European Portuguese.
Only Rosetta Stone: Irish, and separate courses for Spanish from Spain and Latin American Spanish.
So for a less-taught European or South Asian language, Mondly is often the only one of the two that offers it. For the big languages, both are covered and the choice comes down to method and price.
How a Mondly lesson works
Mondly organizes its course into about 50 everyday topics (family, travel, food, work and so on). Each topic is a short set of lessons with translation, listening, word-building and speaking exercises; speech recognition checks your pronunciation. The free tier gives you a daily lesson plus weekly and monthly challenges. Premium opens every lesson and adds:
- AI Conversations to practice speaking with a chatbot that answers you;
- vocabulary review with spaced repetition;
- grammar guides and conjugation tables;
- more than 50 pronunciation-focused lessons and 41 scripted conversations;
- hands-free lessons, Mondly Kids content and augmented-reality lessons.
The format is fast: most lessons take a few minutes, which suits a commute. The limits are the ones users mention most often. The content is the same template across languages, so it ignores what is distinctive about each one, and a few reviewers report wrong answers in exercises and a conversation bot that does not wait long enough for a beginner to reply.
How a Rosetta Stone lesson works
Rosetta Stone’s current app, which it calls Sapphire, is built around a Learning Path of immersive lessons. Every phrase you say is scored by TruAccent, its speech engine. Around the core course sit:
- Chat Missions, conversation practice set in travel and social situations;
- Flashcards, with more than 500 sets on topics from sports to art;
- Sapphire Studio, which builds learning activities on any topic you choose;
- Tutoring, a paid extra: 30-minute online sessions with Rosetta Stone-certified tutors, sold in packages of 5 or 10, available in all 25 languages. You need a subscription before you can buy tutoring.
Lessons are well structured and get harder at a steady pace. The trade-off is repetition: matching pictures to phrases is the core activity at every level, and several recent reviewers describe the photos and vocabulary as dated. Rosetta Stone also has a long record in schools and companies (it says 22,000 educational institutions and 12,000 corporations use it), which matters if an employer is paying.
Speaking practice: which gets you talking?
Neither app replaces a conversation with a person, but they prepare you for one differently. Rosetta Stone scores your pronunciation on every phrase, which builds a cleaner accent early. Mondly’s AI Conversations let you produce your own answers, which is closer to real talk but less polished. The only route to a real human in either product is Rosetta Stone’s paid tutoring.
If speaking is the goal, a tutor is the faster path. italki and Preply tutors set their own rates, and a single lesson often costs less than a month of either app (see the options below).
What users complain about
We read the newest one- and two-star reviews for both on Trustpilot on 14 October 2026, plus the recent Reddit threads that come up for these apps. The patterns are different:
- Rosetta Stone (TrustScore 2.0 from about 7,000 reviews): the loudest complaints in 2026 come from long-time customers. Several say lifetime licenses and older CD or download versions they paid for no longer give them access, or do not carry over to the new Sapphire app; a February 2026 post about this in r/languagelearning warned others off lifetime deals and was widely shared. Others find the method thin on grammar and the speech recognition unreliable.
- Mondly (TrustScore 2.5 from 782 reviews, 27% one-star): most complaints are about billing rather than teaching. Reviewers say a “free trial” in the app turned into an annual charge, that canceling was hard to find, and that support was slow. Some also report errors in lesson answers.
Both companies have plenty of happy users too (about half of Rosetta Stone’s Trustpilot reviews are five stars). But the complaints point to the same precaution: read the renewal terms before you subscribe, and if you start a trial inside an app, cancel it in the App Store or Google Play before it converts.
The lifetime question
Many people search for a lifetime deal on one of these apps. On 14 October 2026 neither sold one on its standard pages: Rosetta Stone’s price page lists only monthly and yearly plans, and Mondly’s sale page lists 1, 3 and 12 months. A Reddit thread from August 2026 notes that Rosetta Stone has ended lifetime licenses for new customers. Given the complaints above from earlier lifetime buyers, we would not chase a third-party “lifetime” reseller deal for either.

Free trials and refunds
Rosetta Stone has no free plan; its site lets you try sample lessons before you subscribe. Its terms give a 14-day money-back guarantee on purchases made directly from Rosetta Stone. Purchases through Apple or Google follow those stores’ rules.
Mondly has a genuine free tier: one daily lesson plus the weekly and monthly challenges, with no time limit. Premium trials are offered inside the apps; Mondly’s terms leave refunds to the subscription agreement, and app-store purchases are refunded (or not) by Apple or Google. One reviewer whose Apple refund was first declined got it after invoking the 14-day withdrawal right that applies in the EU and UK.

Final verdict: Mondly vs Rosetta Stone
For most casual learners, Mondly is the better value: on its sale plan it costs less than half of Rosetta Stone’s yearly price, it covers 16 more languages, and it now explains grammar. Its weakness is depth, and its billing complaints mean you should cancel any in-app trial you do not want to keep.
Rosetta Stone is the stronger course if you will stick with one language, enjoy learning by immersion and want your pronunciation corrected constantly. Its weaknesses are price, the lack of explanations and the way it has treated some older lifetime customers.
If neither method appeals, that is useful information too: structured explanation (Babbel), audio (Pimsleur) or a human tutor (italki, Preply) may suit you better than either app.
